Game Thread Ohio State @ Nebraska, 10/14/17 @ 7:30 ET (FS1)

Last year tOSU mauled turtles and corn and it didn't mean much. My hope is that with the changes in the offensive coaching staff we are on an opposite trajectory compared to that of last year. Then we were on the way down, this year on the way up. We'll know in a few weeks.

Alright... Here we go what do you guys want to see?

1. Special teams perfection. Kick the ball through the end zone our defense is too good right now for the ST's to screw up field position for them. We really need our punter when called on to get off a good ball he cannot shank punts.

2. Penalties- stop, please. Just stop.

3. Run the ball effectively from the start. We tend to struggle getting more then 2-3 yards the first series and it would be enormous if we could pop 1 or 2 10+ yard runs

4. Hit 1 pass over top. I'm not greedy and I think just hitting one shot over top will do wonders for this offense going into the bye week. I think we all know we'll hit a few intermediate routes, and we will probably pop a couple screens for big gains too.

5. Stop the run cold. I think getting Fuller in there full time has been why we've settled down, and right now I think we have 3 DB's playing at a crazy high level (Arnette/Sheffield have been right there too). We seem to have figured out how we want to rush the passer and you add that to a very good press secondary and I'm confident they'll continue to lock teams down.

However, we still tend to leave 5-6 in the Box a ton which leaves us open to the run a bit. We did a masterful job at filling quick when we realized run and It'd be awesome to show that kind of attack again.

6. Win. ( I put this so that the next poster doesn't post a 1 word reply to my post)

Damn. I guess I need to give a real answer:
1. Win. (ha! But seriously, without this one, I couldn't give any Mark Mays what happens further down the list.)
2. I want to see JT Barrett throw some deep passes, and connect on a couple of them. I want to show future opponents that their safeties better be playing deep. Maybe have Weber or Dobbins throw one of the deep passes. Even if he throws it out of bounds, it shows that the potential is there and you can't cheat with them and the corners need to stay on their receivers.
3. I want to see some good rushing plays. I don't need 100+ yards out of any one player, but maybe 200-250 yards between Barrett, Dobbins, and Weber, including pushing it into the endzone on goal-to-go situations.
4. Going back to #2, I want to see Barrett play smarter. That one pass on the first drive to Dixon turned out well, but a good defense will turn that into 6 for the bad guys.
5. No more dropped passes. I get that Barrett isn't playing as well as some people wish he was, but the receivers' drops aren't helping. Last week was better - let's improve on that.
6. Last week I asked for a defensive or a special teams touchdown. The defense pulled through, but special teams gave it away. Don't do that! No more suck-ass special teams.
7. Last week the defense held Maryland to around 66 total yards. That was mostly because they weren't passing much. I don't care if you're down to your 10th quarterback, you need to pass against this team. I don't know how Nebraska's quarterback is playing, but let's see if our backs can shut him down. Hold Nebraska under 150 yards passing.

He's thrown 10 INTs (to 11 TDs) on the season and only completes 54%. Guy isnt very good, should be able to force some turnovers at least.

I watched them play Rutgers, and the only reason Rutgers was in the game (in Lincoln, mind you) was because of the Nebraska QB--he threw two picks, including a pick-six. Nebraska ran the ball pretty well, but anytime it was 3rd down and more than 5 yards, you knew Nebraska wasn't going any further--this dude was going to throw, and it was going to be an INT or an incompletion resulting in a punt.

I feel bad for Nebraska. Their coach is Magoo and they are a shell of their glory days. And they know it will probably get very ugly this week.

But if I were them, I'd look at the Oklahoma film and understand that Ohio State is not that far removed from that dog shit performance, and that anything can happen in a CFB game. The problem for them is, you just don't sense that they are capable of pulling an Iowa State off. In addition, you also sense that the OSU front 7 has found their happy place, and that the backs are figuring it out. I think the OSU offense can still be stymied by some combination of stout run defense and bad weather, but I also sense that the Nebraska defense is swiss cheese. So, ugly is the most likely outcome. I think Husker fans will be happy if Ohio State doesn't cover - and that's a sad place for a proud program to be in.

The thing is Oklahoma had a legit Dual Threat QB who got to face a buckeye defense that lacked confidence and experience. Now we aren't that much more experienced but I definitely feel the confidence is back and they have settled down. I know what you mean though and maybe Nebraska can try to do what OU did on defense. At the same time though in that OU game we should've had our way with that defense of theirs and I think we would have had Wilson had a better understanding of what we can do offensively. I think with Wilson knowing what we are capable of now really enables us to avoid situations we won't be successful with.

I think Ohio State is much improved, but because they have faced Army, UNLV, Rutgers, and Maryland we still don't know whether the offensive problems are fixed for when they face an outstanding defense or whether the DB's can hold up against a good offense. That judgment will be made after the Penn State game. I don't think Nebraska has anything in common with Oklahoma, but a lot of defensive football has to do with effort with violence within a scheme. I'm thinking that if they find a way to do that, they might find some degree of success, and if you do it enough to create some frustration and doubt in the OSU offensive players and Wilson, then you might find a way to stymie the works. My problem with Nebraska is that I don't see the effort, violence, or scheme.
