Game Thread Ohio State vs Illinois, 11/18/17 @ 3:30 (ABC)

This isn’t true. There has already been a couple posts outlining the fact that Michigan still has a chance to go to the B1GCC.
Read the tiebreakers again, Sparky. If we beat Illinois, we're in, even if we lose to Michigan.

EDIT: My post clearly involved the scenario of us, Sparty, the Pedsters, and scUM all being tied at 7-2 in conference, with our losing to scUM. Now, if both Sparty and the Pedsters were to lose one of their two last games AND we lose to scUM, then scUM would indeed win the lead-to-head tiebreaker in the two-way (not four-way) tie. Both the Pedsters and Sparty play Maryland, and the Pedsters play Nebraska at home with Sparty playing at Rutgers. So, if you think that both Sparty and the Pedsters are going to lose one of those games and we're going to lose at scUM, then you may want to cut back on the crack...

The Story Of Illibuck: The Most Interesting Turtle In The World

The story behind the turtle that inspired one of college football's most unique rivalry trophies.

illibucktrophy.0.jpeg

On Saturday Illinois and Ohio State will meet on the gridiron in a battle to determine not only the winner of a Big Ten football game, but also which school will lay claim to the famed Illibuck Trophy. The Illibuck is one of the most cherished trophies in all of college football, as many teams have longed for the chance to get their hands on it, but only the lucky few at Illinois and Ohio State ever have the chance.

But why?

What is the Illibuck Trophy?

Well, on the surface the Illibuck Trophy is a wooden turtle. On the back of that wooden turtle -- its shell -- the scores of previous games in the Illinois-Ohio State rivalry are inscribed. Though that's just the trophy itself. While its wooden shell can tell you the final scores of years past, what it cannot do is tell you the story of Illibuck.

But we here at The Champaign Room can.

After conducting numerous interviews and going over hours upon hours of audio tape, poring through old photos, The Champaign Room has been able to put together what it believes to be the definitive story of Illibuck. The most interesting turtle in the world.

Illibuck was born on a beach on the Galapagos Islands in 1825. At the young age of six he met a man by the name of Charles Darwin who was immediately drawn to the turtle because he seemed different from the others.

"I'm am particularly interested in one specific turtle," wrote Darwin in his journal. "While the majority of the majestic creatures seem to follow the same routine every day, and move around quite slowly, the turtle I call 'Illibuck' is just different. He seems to be a free-thinker. It's as if he's more advanced than the rest of the turtles. More evolved."

It was Illibuck's desire to be different that would eventually lead to him leaving the Galapagos Islands in the early 1900s. The date isn't clear, but those who knew Illibuck say he used an ocean current to travel north toward Central America. From there he would move north through Mexico and to the United States.

Like any immigrant to the United States, Illibuck made his way to New York City. Of course, unlike Irish immigrants or Italian immigrants at the time, Illibuck didn't have a cultural neighborhood to move into in the city. However, he would find compatriots under the city.

While living in the sewers of New York, Illibuck would meet a new family.

"Illibuck was an interesting turtle," says Raphael, a fellow turtle who Illibuck lived and fought crime with in New York for years. "He really cared about fighting crime because he believed in good, but he also wasn't really much of a conformist.

"I mean, I'm the one that's always been painted as the rebel in this group, but I had nothing on Illibuck."

Fighting crime in New York would take its toll on Illibuck, however.

"You fight and you fight and you fight," said Illibuck's close friend Leonardo. "But no matter how many times you beat Shredder, or you take care of the bad guys, there are always more bad guys. There's always more crime. It starts to wear you down. It's worn me down. I've had my dark times, but nothing quite like what Illibuck went through."

A brief history of the Ohio State-Illinois rivalry

Is it a rivalry? It is, albeit a lopsided one, and there's a trophy to prove it.

91181287.0.jpg

Believe it or not, in the nascent years of the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Illinois Fighting Illini football programs, the rivalry between these two programs was quite intense. The teams first met in 1902, a contest that ended in a 0-0 tie. Between 1902 and 1924, these teams met 13 times, with Illinois claiming victory seven times. Ohio State beat the Illini four times in that span, and there were two ties.

In 1925, the Bucket and Dipper honorary society at Ohio State, and the Atius-Sachem honorary society at Illinois, worked together to come up with a way to commemorate the rivalry between the Buckeyes and the Fighting Illini. Beginning with the 1925 season, the team that won the rivalry game was presented with a live turtle, named the Illibuck. A turtle was chosen because of their long lifespan, which was meant to symbolize the long life of the rivalry between the Buckeyes and the Illini.

The original Illibuck had no such luck, however, and passed away in 1927. Since that time, a carved wooden turtle, still known as the Illibuck, and nicknamed "Illy Illibuck," has served as the trophy in this rivalry. Nine Illibucks have been carved since 1927, and each bears the scores from the games on its back. The trophy weighs 32 pounds, and is the second-oldest trophy tradition in Big Ten history, after the Little Brown Jug awarded to the winner of That Team Up North and Minnesota, which was initiated in 1903.
