Ohio State vs. Marshall, 2004

I am happy with JT, but it is too early to put him up as the greatest OSU Coach in history.

Paul Brown, Woody Hayes.

JT had some advantages when he came here. The team wasn't awful, they just had some bad apples, and underacheivers.

He understood Ohio State and how important Football is, yet kept it in perspective.

He got Mike Doss to buy into his philosophy right away which I think is why the team as a whole responded so well to it.

Greatness is acheived over years and years. I wouldn't even call JT a Ledgend at this point. Just a very good coach heading that way.

Forums are a tricky thing like that. It's supposed to be a place where people can gather and share their opinions. If you're not careful, it can turn into grassy/bucknuts/UM board, where opinions quickly turn into insults, and insults turn into insane raving.
So... you don't agree with someone. Is it necessary to call them a dumbass? I mean... sure they've got their opinions, but it's early. Just give yours if you're so inclined and let time tell. None of this other stuff is necessary. In the meantime, it's fun to be a fan and speculate, hypothesize, and most of all, to share it with others in a public forum. No need to get out of hand with it.

As for Tressel--some people seek acceptance. Some people want OSU to be accepted by the experts and the rest of the country. Right now OSU's style of play isn't conducive to the media embrace, so they'll have problems with JT and his philosophy (looks like he might FINALLY open it up like it's been talked about since he started). To those who have problems with the way we win now, I offer them: Coop.

Pittman might also still be in the doghouse a bit for running out of bounds against Cincy.

Getting Joe back will be a big help, both because he can be used at TB in short yardage, and because we really need our starting FB back. Ross struggled a lot last year when Joe was out, and I think his return will help matters this season. No miracles, but things will improve.

What we need to see from Ross, IMO, is a solid 5ypc game with consistent carries -- 20-25 totes without the stats being skewed by a really big run. Yes, I know the big runs count, and they're great to see, but not if several previous drives go three and out because he's gaining 3 yards or less per carry prior to that. Second and 5 is a great down/distance to see. If Ross can give us that instead of second and 7,8 or 9, then we're going to control the clock, we're going to control field position, and we're going to control the game.

Pittman is a nice change of pace. He gives us a Mr. Outside, and lets Ross take a breather while the opponent's defensive linemen and linebackers are out running wind sprints chasing AP. I hope that he's coming along enough in the eyes of the coaches to get some critical reps.

What I am wondering this week is if Pittman has passed/will pass Hall for #2. Hall went 7/14 against Cincy (I really hadn't noticed his carries), and didn't get any carries against Marshall. At least he's found his groove as a kick returner, but is he done at TB?

A few thoughts:

1) I thought the running game improved noticably when Brandon Joe returned from his pec tear last year, and probably not by sheer, random chance coincidence. So, yeah, I think he's a better run blocker and I'm hopeful that he'll add some juice when he returns this year.

2) For a substantial portion of the second half this week, Zwick looked like a QB in his second-ever game with significant playing time. But once again I thought he showed flashes of being a future all-american. I expect over time that the ugly plays will diminish and the all-american play will grow. I'm cautiously very excited about this guy.

Lydell BLOWS. I am in total agreement. Its time for him to be benched
In my opinion, you're going overboard in two respects here. First, Lydell doesn't blow. Does he dominate? No. But he has some decent carries mixed in with the ugly ones - and I still think a large portion of the poor running plays are as attributable to the O-line as to the tailback. If you look at teams with a dominant running game (and if you're getting 4 yds. or more every carry, that's pretty dominant), you'll see almost every time an O-line that owns and blows open the line of scrimmage. So far, we don't have that. Second, the guy's a Buckeye and he's working at it. It's one thing when a guy desrespects the program by acting like a jackass, he deserves some public lambasting; but not so for the guys who work hard and keep their noses clean, in my view (not to say no criticism). Maybe another TB on the squad can provide more punch, and if so, that's great; but I don't think it serves any of us to ridicule the guys who are trying to make it happen.

Marshall Fans says Thanks

I normally do not post to other team's boards. Usually too much smack and other verbal abuse. HOWEVER, I did want to let Buckeye fans know, that those of us who were visiting for the game were impressed with how respectful the fans were of us before, during, and after the game. It was refreshing and unexpected... You dont often get that kind of treatment. We had people from NC, MI, and FL at the game and all said they were treated the same. We appreciate your sportsmanship and salute you.

GO HERD

This is a place for opinion. And if your opinion is that you don't need to question JT during the middle of the game and just trust in the fact that he wins...then that's a pretty well thought out opinion in my mind. But I do agree that this site would be boring without the sharing of other's ideas. Hearing other people's ideas make it interesting. There are many many different types of Buckeye fans. Some are very critical, some think that nobody who is wearing scarlet and gray could do any wrong, and some are in the middle. One thing is true though...they are all Buckeye fans. They want the team to win. And one thing we seem to all agree on is that JT is the right man for this team. How many teams out there have that? Obviously not those pukes up North. And I don't condone name calling unless it's about those losers. And yes they are LOSERS!!! By 8 points I believe! HAHAHA!!!

Thanks for the props

I'm glad you were treated well. As an OSU fan, I've traveled to a lot of away games, always with my colors on, so to speak. I only had a problem once, and the confrontation really put a downer on the trip.

There are bad apples everywhere, and our fan base isn't perfect. With the bar fight looming, I was a little concerned about the on and off field antics. I like to think we OSU fans usually take out our agressions on automobiles!

The way your program is going, I won't be surprised if you don't start getting some home and homes in the not-too distant future.

Good luck next week between the shrubs.

I am one of those fans who just love the game and I won't ever confront another fan unless they are being disrespectful. I heard the Marshall fans, for the most part, were pretty tame in comparison to what I had been told to expect. There are the occasional jerks that will give you a hard time no matter what, but I would expect most true Buckeyes would have respect for fans who are courteous and have the kind of passion to travel to an away game in hostile territory. You guys played a great game and you should be proud of the kind of heart they came back with after a discouraging loss. With the poor decisions made prior to the game aside, I think there is some mutual respect growing between the fans...Hopefully everyone stays civil and it continues on. Thanks for the post!

Kudos to the Marshall fans as well. You came in numbers and stayed loud throughout. (I wasn't close enough to those sections to determine if it was 'healthy loud' or 'obnoxious loud' - but I will give you the benefit of the doubt.)

As for the game - take any prize from the top shelf.
