Two-Minute Drill: Ryan Day ‘Lightning Round’ Updates — Sept. 19

20190919_131102-1170x780.jpg

Ohio State head coach Ryan Day met with reporters Thursday afternoon to provide some final updates on his football team before Saturday’s game against Miami (OH). He also talked about why he chose to stay at Ohio State and talked a bit about redshirt freshman H-back Jaelen Gill. Here are the highlights.

+ When he’s had opportunities to leave Ohio State, they would arise during the season and they were always too busy to really think about it or explore it. His family loves it here as well, so they didn’t put a lot of thought into leaving. “This place is a special place. Being a coordinator here is better than being a head coach at some other places.”

+ Jaelen Gill is getting opportunities in practice, and the more of those you get, the better your chances of getting on the field. He’s got some guys in front of him, especially now with Austin Mack getting some time at H. He is to the point now where everybody trusts him, so he’s going to get an opportunity here to make plays in games.

+ The practice schedule is pretty much the same as it has been, but there is maybe more 11-on-11 stuff than before. There are some more team-oriented tempo things.

+ Jordan Fuller does everything the way you want your son to do it. If you had a daughter, you’d want her to marry him. He plays at a very high level. He’s respectful and a team captain.

+ Tyreke Smith had something new going on last week as to why he didn’t play in the second half. They’ll see how practice goes today and put out a note on him if need be tomorrow in the availability report.

+ Being tough and being aware of your mental status aren’t mutually exclusive. Just as you need help to get physically tough, you need help to get mentally tough. When you know you’re at a place where people care about you, it’s easier to be open to coaches.

+ There are so many things that are going to show up through the course of a season that they have to get fixed before they become issues and they are working on that constantly.

+ Each game plan is so different than they don’t necessarily hold stuff back for certain opponents. If they’re in the game plan, they’ll typically call those plays.

+ There is a lot of confidence and belief from Jeff Okudah and Damon Arnette in what they are being taught and what they are showing, but this is just week three.

+ Why are transfer quarterbacks doing well? They are leaving great programs, so they all have talent and they head off to other great programs with talent around them. And they are all “thirsty to play.” “We have to evolve with the times.” It’s good to see them all doing well.

+ Any time they can go good on good in practice, that’s going to help them. If you can block Chase Young, you can block anybody. If you can tackle Master Teague, you can tackle anybody.
