Game Thread Ohio State vs Penn State, 10/28/17 @ 3:30 ET (FOX)

I'd take him over Henry and maybe McCafferty. Just as good as Zeke and while Dobbins has a bright future, he's not at Barkley's level yet.

Just has a mediocre line.
I think he tends to stop and try to juke out people behind the line instead of just plowing ahead when trapped...

Wow, what a game. Got my postgame liquor nap and rewatched, JT was near perfect this game despite some bonehead play calls & drops. I saw a few of us were making comparisons with UM to Cooper in the third quarter and I even questioned JT at one point. We're fans it's natural to question but damn am I proud of that fourth quarter effort! GO BUCKS and onto the next game. I got a few more celebratory beers to drink

Ohio State's J.T. Barrett changed this college football season in one quarter

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Entering the fourth-quarter of No. 6 Ohio State’s game with No. 2 Penn State on Saturday night, a feeling of dread filled Ohio Stadium. The 109,302 sat in stunned silence after three quarters of self-induced mistakes, Trace McSorley spirals and two majestic Saquon Barkley dashes into the end zone. Penn State controlled the game, the role of Big Ten alpha dog and its fate for the College Football Playoff. The Nittany Lions spent three unflinching quarters completely unaffected by one of the most notorious cauldrons in college football, needing only to nurse a 15-point lead for the game’s final 15 minutes.

But a violent momentum shift that began with a blocked punt by Ohio State’s Denzel Ward ended with a stunning fourth-quarter run that changed the scope of the entire college football season. Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett threw three touchdown passes in the game’s final 11:05 to secure a 39-38 victory and the school’s biggest comeback since 1989. The victory flipped the script of the Big Ten, College Football Playoff and (maybe) the Heisman Trophy races and indelibly altered Barrett’s career narrative in Columbus. Barrett played a near-perfect quarter, atoning for a fumble on the first drive by completing 13-of-13 passes for 170 yards, including the game-winner to Marcus Baugh with 1:48 remaining.

Dread yielded to delirium at Ohio Stadium, as the game ended with a sea of red oozing from the stands and into a mosh pit of ecstasy on the turf. Neil Diamond’s Sweet Caroline echoed the vibe of the stadium and state: “SO GOOD! SO GOOD! SO GOOD!”

The frenetic night encapsulated J.T. Barrett’s career arc at Ohio State – anonymous start, brilliance interspersed with setbacks and, finally it appears, a chance at a flawless finish. Against the nation’s No. 1 scoring defense, Barrett set a school record with 423 total yards, completed his final 16 passes and leap-frogged Drew Brees on the Big Ten’s all-time touchdown pass list (94 and counting).

Cont'd ...

Epic game.

I'll admit I felt like it might get away from us after that decision to go for it on 4th and 8 instead of kicking a FG and making it a one possession game. That was really an emotional decision out of frustration and when those happen it is usually a sign things are going to come apart at the seams.

Fortunately the team held it together and we managed to stay in the game long enough to overcome the flubs that got us in the hole we found ourselves in. It didn't always feel like this in real time, but after watching the game again it is clear we were the better team in most facets and without so many self-inflicted wounds we could have won by a few scores.

Things that bugged me...
1) Special Teams, but especially kicking and coverage. Why is ST such a liability game in and game out? Are they not practicing enough, is it bad coaching? A program like this shouldn't have a ST unit where you hold you breath on every kick and count them a net negative as opposed to net neutral or stength. It's we cannot either kick it out of the endzone or cover returned kicks, so we have to resort to squib kicks. Even when we settle for a squib kick it almost cost us at the end of the game when we kicked it right at the top defender and it essentially became an onside kick that gave them the ball a mere 25 yards away from being able to hit a game winning FG. Prior to that kick off I felt like barring some miracle for Ped we would win, and after that piss poor kick giving them the ball on the 40 I almost collapsed on the floor over the field position we gifted them.

2) If they need to raise money off apparel that bad by bringing out these unconventional jerseys can we at least do it when we play Rutgers or something? If it doesn't have scarlet it doesn't belong IMO (I know the small O was scarlet, but you can't really see it). I'm not going to say the jerseys had anything to do with anything, good or bad, but common sense would dictate in a big game it might not be the best time to fuck around with the uniform. From a purely sports science perspective you know over time your mind creates shortcuts to process decision making and reaction based on cues, and colors can be one of those cues. The point is, why fuck around with a good thing to make a little money or be cute?

3) Officiating looked more like a PAC-12 crew. For me I think it was more about inconsistency than it being called purely one-sided. Unlike most here I don't think the overturned INT was a bad call on replay. Trust me, if they could have ruled that play incomplete and basically called it wash they would have because it was such a big swing on a not a crystal clear situation (but of course it could only be ruled an INT or TD). I also know when there is any doubt they should defer to the field call, but this seemed pretty clear to me the TD was the more correct call of the two, but had they let the call stand it would have been correct by the letter of law. The point is, I don't think we can feel robbed on it as much as you can feel robbed by not getting out of speeding ticket because the cop showed up to court. I watched it from all the angles a few times and it seemed pretty clear the Penn receiver had the ball possessed and it was then stripped out. I get that you can make an argument that it could all be considered continuation of the play and so he didn't really have possession if it could be wrestled away at some point later, and that's the annoying part of defining what a legal reception is because you can't really define it. Because if he had done the same thing and the ball had hit the ground it would have probably be ruled incomplete because he didn't maintain possession throughout the entire process... but I think in this case the benefit of doubt is that because he had control in the endzone, the play is dead with a TD before we wrestle it away, and the benefit of doubt is given that he wouldn't have lost control over it. It passed the eye test to me as a TD because if the roles were reversed I would be crying foul if we didn't get the TD and instead called it an INT.

JT was absolutely brilliant. Best single game QB performance in Buckeye history.

Can't win the big game? He peaked against MSU in '14? GTFO.

I saw people on Twitter saying that Troy Smith is still the GOAT, but Troy had 30 TDs in '06. JT has 30 TDs in eight games this year. And only one int. He breaks a new record every freaking week.

I'm not a huge Cowherd fan, but earlier this week he said that the Buckeyes would beat Ped State, go to the playoff, and house Alabama. I thought he was kind of crazy when he said that, but after witnessing what I just saw, there is ZERO quit in this team, and it all starts with JT.

Enjoy him, folks. There ain't gonna be another one like him for a generation.

ON BRINK OF BEING ELIMINATED FROM CHAMPIONSHIP CONTENTION, OHIO STATE SAVES SEASON WITH EPIC FOURTH-QUARTER COMEBACK AGAINST PENN STATE

87161_h.jpg

In his 31st season coaching college football and his 16th season as a Football Bowl Subdivision head coach, Ohio State’s Urban Meyer has been a part of many memorable games.

There’s a new game right near the top of the list, however, after Ohio State’s 39-38 win over Penn State on Saturday.

"That was one of the best fourth quarters I've ever witnessed in my coaching career," Meyer said. "Of all the 31 years I've ever been (coaching), I can't remember one quite like this one."

Trailing by 15 points entering the final 15 minutes of Saturday’s game, Meyer’s team appeared to be on the verge of losing a second regular-season game for the first time in Meyer’s tenure at Ohio State and on the brink of being all but eliminated from the College Football Playoff conversation.

An epic comeback, highlighted by a near-perfect fourth quarter by Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett, dominant defense and even a big special teams play, changed all of that.

THREE KEY STATS: OHIO STATE'S OFFENSE AND DEFENSE HIT MARKS WHILE SEAN NUERNBERGER DELIVERS CONSISTENCY IN WIN VS. PENN STATE

87171_h.jpg

The 39-38 final score from Ohio Stadium demonstrates that the Buckeyes were pushed to their absolute limits by Penn State on Saturday.

The total yardage from Saturday’s game, however, would have suggested that they dominated.

In part because kickoff statistics don’t count toward a team’s total yardage, Ohio State outgained Penn State by nearly 250 yards on Saturday, putting up better numbers than any other team had against the Nittany Lions all the while continuing to hit the impressive marks that the Buckeyes have hit in most of their games this season.

Ohio State’s ability to control the yardage battle doesn’t tell the whole story of Saturday’s game – after an epic fourth-quarter comeback, no numbers can do that – but its ability to do that on both sides of the ball, as well as a key special teams improvement from last year’s Ohio State loss at Penn State, make up our Three Key Stats from Saturday’s game.

OHIO STATE OFFENSE GAINS 529 YARDS

As it has done in all seven of its victories this season, Ohio State topped the 500-yard mark on Saturday.

Ohio State’s 529 yards on Saturday were actually less than the Buckeyes had gained in each of their previous six games, yet Saturday’s performance still might have been the Buckeyes’ most impressive offensive performance of the season, as it came against a defense that had allowed an average of less than 283 yards per game – and never more than 352 yards in any of its first seven games – entering Saturday’s game.

Against a team that had allowed no more than 19 points in its first seven games of the season, Ohio State more than doubled that (and more than quadrupled Penn State’s average of allowing only 9.6 points per game) by scoring 39.

Re: SEAN NUERNBERGER MAKES 2-OF-2 FIELD GOALS, 3-OF-3 EXTRA POINTS

Wouldn't have guessed that anyone would have said Da Boot's perfect night was one of the "3 key stats": howver, in a one point (39-38) game every point counted.
