Ohio State Wrestling (2015/2017/2018 B1G Champs, 2015 National Champs, 2019 National Runners-up)

All eight Buckeyes are in contention for All America honors, but there are a few tough matches in Friday morning's offering. D'Emilio faces No. 2 Jaydin Eierman of Iowa, Kharchla will meet No. 2 Keegan O’Toole of Missouri, and Romero draws No. 2 Aaron Brooks of Penn State.

The third session of the 2022 NCAA Championships begins Friday at 11 a.m. The quarterfinals and wrestlebacks are televised on ESPNU and WatchESPN.

Tate wins his consolation bout, 5-0 over a kid from Okie St
Ethan won his conso 4-1
Hoffman takes down another higher seed, this time the 13th from Oklahoma, 5-3, and just clinched AA status....easy bright spot of the week!
Romero dropped 13-2 to Brooks from PSU
Kharchla battled but lost 2-0 to the 2 seed from Mizzou
Sasso beats the 5 seed from ASU in SV, 3-1, 3x AA now
Dylan lost a tough 5-3 to Eierman from Iowa in his conso
Malik dropped a 9-4 to Barnett from Wiscy in his conso

I believe that'll leave 6 alive for tonight, Hoffman and Sasso in the semi's, 4 others in conso's, Malik and Dylan the only that didn't

Well hats off to Hoffman, would have never expected that at all. And congrats to Sasso, his opponent was a tough match, was concerned about him making it through that one. Romero is very disappointing even considering the caliber of his opponent. Kharchla is a bummer but a close match with a tough opponent, his time is coming. The rest...meh.

Hoffman will go against the #1 seed, Dean, from PSU
Obviously an interesting storyline there since he's a prior PSU commit

Sasso vs the #1 seed Yianni D
Interesting because the other semi is the #10 and #11 seeds, Wilson and Gomez both got upset
While not a given, it would certainly seem whoever won their semi would be a heavy favorite tomorrow

Welp, let's forget about this season. Nothing positive to say really at this point. Kind of upsetting to pour money into a program that can't get a damn wrestler in the finals, and hardly anyone on the podium. Ryan better fix this shit next year or we'll find our new head coach.

Some times I think it's Ryan's lack of coaching, some times I think it's the recruiting but I'll give him a break on that because of all the hype for next year's class. And some times it's just the luck of the draw. Sasso for example I think is the 2nd best 149 out there but he's never going to beat that Greek kid who is about 6 inches taller than him and probably walks around at about 170. I swear I don't know how these kids cut that much and maintain their strength! Sammy busted his ass out there and left it on the mat. But yeah some other guys I don't know maybe the bright lights were too much for them.

Lack of coaching for this season. We weren't going to make a run for the title, but to be borderline top 10 with this group is not acceptable. The bad draws are because our guys had a less than stellar season and got lower seeds. I agree no shame for Sasso, Yianni is a monster. But the overall performance was bad. Malik never AA'ed despite his talent and only won one match in the tourney (he was talented but never broke through). D'Emilio is also talented and we should be getting more from him, though drawing Eierman that early in the consi's is tough. Sasso taking 5th is way lower than he should be, honestly shouldbe a champion. Kharchla I guess did what he was supposed to do, but he has the ability to go all the way and he isn't there. Smith not getting on the podium is bad, no other way to put it after taking 5th and getting to the semi's last year. Romero needs to break through next year once Brooks and Amine are gone, not really any chance of beating those guys this season. The lone bright spot was Hoffman at 197, honestly floored he AA'ed, although you have to pinch yourself and be reminded he was #1 at his weight and a top 10 overall guy coming in...that is a frequent theme where those guys are not coming close to performing like similarly ranked guys at PSU, Iowa, *ichigan, etc. Orndorff is whatever, we will have a huge upgrade next year.

On that end, this year is officially over with the consolation rounds done and next year there is a lot to look forward to. The incoming class has to come in and perform like when we had Stieber, Bo Jordan, etc. come in. I know that is a lot of pressure, but it simply has to turn around greatly or else we are going to be far outside the conversation of PSU, Iowa and *ichigan at the top of the conference.

Got some good little nuggets:

1. Guys coming back: Expect all of Heinselmann, Ethan Smith and Romero back. All of which are net positives for next season.

2. Gallagher at 157 is a stud. Saved him a year to develop knowing this year was not the year.

3. Feldman is going to compete immediately at heavyweight. Dude is our next big thing, calling it now.

4. Mendez is going to be the guy at 133. Obviously has to win the spot, but the kid is good.

5. Sonny Sasso is going to Ohio State if we want him. I think he's OSU caliber. Keep an eye on that one.

Next year we're not going to win a title or anything, but we need to bump up to top 5 next year and position to make a run in 2024. I think that is doable.

Wrestling seems like the kind of sport that is 100% recruiting. You get the best wrestler, he wins, the end. It feels like it's in the age of UConn girls bball dominance. There's like 4 elite basketball players that are girls, they all go to UConn, UConn goes undefeated, shockedpikachu.jpg. That's what wrestling feels like to me.

Mostly you're correct. It's relatively easy to identify talent and if you get them in, you're usually going to be good. Last few cycles we've had top recruits and not phenomenal results. This year will tell it all, if we aren't vastly improved, we have a problem.

A few years back..2020 I think..we had a couple top recruits from several years before that were undefeated coming down the stretch and then COVID denied them the 'phenomenal results' Pletcher and Moore deserved.

And the 2024 run will include Rocco Welsh, Vinny Kiilkeary, and maybe another Pa. recruit is coming...stay tuned!

Pletcher and Moore were going to win titles, no doubt in my mind. They were robbed, NCAA got that one so wrong.
