Ohio State Wrestling (2015/2017/2018 B1G Champs, 2015 National Champs, 2019 National Runners-up)

Got a chance to watch some of the tourney on Flo and I was very impressed. Tomasello is going to shoot up that list fast...one of the biggest 125 guys I've seen and is a bear with his tie-ups...extremely quick as well. Very nice win for Demas at 157, guess he was hurt for wrestle offs? Either way, seems every match Demas wrestles is a nail biter but the win over Murphy is great stuff. Also worth noting that Mic Jordan kicked some ass and won the freshman/sophomore division...beat Jacob Danishek (freshman from Dayton Christian that was ranked #2 at the weight above Mic coming out of high school), so that is a really big win for him. Bo beating Massa was HUGE as well and he really dominated that match...completely controlled his ties and Massa never came close to scoring on Bo. Hope Martin is healthy, would have liked to see him wrestle Walters though. Unfortunately Tavanello looked awful, he needs to wrestle at a much higher level for us.

Speculation on Kolodzik? PSU, Cornell maybe Stanford?

To loop back after getting some info...talked to someone who stays in touch with their family...sounds like he is picking Princeton.

And also, we are apparently going to roll with Haines over Tavanello at heavy. Not sure if it had anything to do with Tav's performance at the MSU open or if the coaches simply see more upside in Haines (my guess is a bit of both but moreso the latter). I know how the wrestle-off went but I think this makes our roster better down the road.

Mercyhurst Open was this weekend and we had four champions (the competition was extremely weak though). DiJulius blew through 133 in his season debut, Mic dominated the entire weight at 157, Prezzia won at 174 (Ryan Harris would have faced him in the finals but it looks like they didn't wrestle), and Courts smashed everyone at 184 (Fox took 4th there). Really ready to get the season going.

@RB07OSU I was wondering what you thought of the following predictions from this article
http://www.landgrantholyland.com/20...ing-season-preview-pt-2-the-freshman-captains

Tomasello currently sits at 12 in the Flowrestling rankings, which is mostly due to his limited opportunities against elite college competition. The top two at 125 are set in stone: Jesse Delgado of Illinois and Nashon Garrett of Cornell. Even though Tomasello has beaten Garrett in freestyle, I can't predict him to finish above the defending national runner-up. For now, I'd probably rank Gilman of Iowa ahead of Tomasello too because of several freestyle victories over the Buckeye freshman. I fully expect Tomasello to be an all-American this season, though, and could see him settling in anywhere between 3rd and 6th place.

The sky is the limit for Jordan, but he also finds himself in a very tough weight class. 165 pounds is loaded this year with names like defending 157-pound national champion Alex Dieringer, All-american Nick Sulzer, and Bo's cousin Isaac Jordan. Still, Jordan is a special talent and I expect him to perform like it. He is certainly capable of winning a national title this year, but I'm not ready to predict it just yet. For now I'm slotting Jordan anywhere between 2 and 4 at the NCAA tournament, with plenty of bonus points scored along the way.

That's Snyder's floor. It's would be an incredible Freshman season, and it's the absolute worst I can see Snyder doing.

To see his ceiling, let's look at Missouri's J'Den Cox, the current king of Snyder's 197-pound weight class. Cox lost two matches early in the season, then hit his stride, winning 24 straight matches to end the season. Buckeye fans will remember that in the NCAA Tournament, Cox beat Ohio State's Nick Heflin in a close and highly controversial match to win the national championship. Snyder and Cox have wrestled before, with Cox winning once and Snyder winning the other. They'll meet again during the regular season. Missouri is coming Columbus December 14. That match will go a long way toward letting us know how Snyder is readjusting to folkstyle after a year of focusing on freestyle.

But to get back to the prediction, Cox showed us that a true freshman can win a national title, and Snyder showed us in the past that he's at least as good as Cox. There's a long way to go, and Snyder has yet to set foot on an Ohio State mat, but he has dominated every level of wrestling that he's been a part of, and I feel confident that he will keep it up in college. There are eight spots on the NCAA tournament podium, and I will be shocked if Snyder isn't standing on the top half come March.

Also is not it somewhat unusual to have 3 of the 4 captains be freshman even though two of them are RS freshman? I thought perhaps the Stiebler brothers would be captains. Do not quite understand what is going on with them..

125 is an incredibly tough weight this year at the top but Tomasello has the ability to win it all without a doubt...I am thinking he drops a few matches to the Delgado's of the world in the season but could win the B1G/Nationals once he gets re-acclimated to top-notch folkstyle wrestling. Plus that seems to be Coach Ryan's mo...get them ready for runs at the NCAAs. But there is no scenario aside from complete implosion that Tomasello does not AA...kid wants to be a 4 timer and puts in the work to back it up.

At 165, I disagree on it being a "very tough" weight...in fact, he has the best shot out of all the freshman to win it due to his weight class. No weight is "easy" at this level but it gives him the best shot at winning it all imo. I tend to agree with a possible runner-up...I'm not super impressed with Sulzer and Bo is a better wrestler than Isaac. Plus I don't see Bo losing any trap matches along the way, he is very focused and disciplined. Dieringer is going to be a tough one but Bo is more than capable of beating him.

At 197, Cox is a phenom and Schiller of Minnesota just beat him...very tough at the top here. But Snyder will get more than enough opportunities to see Schiller and as the article mentions, he will see Cox early December. I particularly agree with this prediction because Snyder did not wrestle hardly any folk at all last year and instead trained at the Olympic center. Then again, that means he faced the highest level of competition out there and should be in phenomenal shape...plus I think coming back to folk from freestyle is exaggerated in terms of adjusting. I never had a huge issue with it after a week of so and you can sometimes incorporate freestyle moves effectively into folk that will surprise your opponent. He will be an AA no doubt but I need to see him wrestle Schiller and Cox before I can really predict...he will be top 3 I think (Gadson is also VERY tough at #3 from Iowa State) but he is going to be right there with the top guys. I'm inclined to say he wins it by the end of the year but he may be a guy that doesn't drop matches early...after training with Olympians, there is not going to be a huge adjustment at this level for Kyle. I mean, he absolutely smoked the #8 and #17 wrestlers last weekend.

- And I suppose it is not ordinary for that much youth as captains but those guys are extremely driven and natural leaders on and off the mat. They have the mindset you want spreading throughout your team...sometimes it goes beyond performance on the mat. Without going into it too much, some other candidates have had weight issues and occasional complacency. Nothing to be alarmed about, but enough to use the captain decisions to motivate them.

Wrestling Kent State now, who has 4 ranked wrestlers...big one is Demas (#7) vs. Ian Miller (#3). So far, Tomasello teched an unranked guy, DiJulius beat the #17 guy 2-1, and Logan teched his guy. Follow it live on their twitter.

No Hunter at 149...hmmm.

Watched the Journeymen Tussle (tri meet) today and the Buckeyes killed ASU and Army as expected. Wish I could have seen some more wrestlers but we held a ton of guys out. My thoughts (if I get too lengthy with these posts, I can cut it down...just let me know):

125: Tomasello didn't face good competition again but he is a complete stud. Pin machine and is so heavy on top...he is going to turn some good wrestlers like a page this year. Do NOT sleep on this kid making a title run this year...I know he has not faced anyone tough yet but just watch him and you know he is that talented.

133: Only one match but it was against a 2x NCAA qualifier and he murdered him. Was about to tech fall him but pinned him instead. Really happy to see him have a dominant performance like that, he looked rusty early on.

141: Logan kicked the crap out of everyone...shocker. The big story is that he made weight though...lots of speculation he would bump up. Really glad he didn't, we need him at 141 or our entire roster gets thrown off.

149: Still no Hunter Stieber...starting to worry me. Not sure if it is weight or injury...still trying to get info there and everyone in the program is extremely tight lipped. I will keep digging. Hate to be so apocalyptic but seriously...no Hunter, no title. He needs to break through the semi's at NCAA's for us to be in the hunt.

157: Demas wrestled like paint drying as usual but won 2-1. He wrestled a great freshman in Russell Parsons from Blair, but still (Bo reamed him in HS). Granted that Demas could wrestle me and win by a point or wrestle the #1 guy and still win by a point, I want Mic to win this weight simply for entertainment value. But he will not...Mic is getting the redshirt this year. It will be Demas all year, hopefully he ends up on the right side of the W-L column with these close matches. On the bright side, he usually does.

165: No Bo here today (likely to rest)...so who cares.

174: Mark Martin is flat out disappointing. His high school game never translated to college. Lost in OT to an unranked guy. At the very best, maybe he gets on the podium this year but I doubt it.

184: Kenny did really well. Majored his first guy and got a big win over #11 Blake Stauffer from ASU. Really excited to see him get that win, should give him momentum moving forward.

197: Snyder only wrestled against ASU but destroyed his guy. Moves incredibly for his weight...heavy hands, incredible strength on the mat, and can be explosive on his feet. Can't wait to see him wrestle Cox in December.

Hvy: Tav wrestled here and did well...but still no Haines. Had good word that Haines was going to wrestle here. Still very early though, so we will see (apply this to every questionable weight, things are in flux).

Thanks for getting to the bottom of it. I hope by holding him out until then, Hunter will be at or near 100%

Apparently it is a toe thing, so not the usual injury(injuries) he has had in the past and is not too serious. He could wrestle if it was mid-January or later, but the staff wants him 100% to start off the new year. Smart move...still gets about 6 weeks or more to shake off the rust for the conference championship and NCAA's.

With Iowa and PSU coming to see us in early January how important will it be to us to have Hunter available to wrestle in those two meets? I guess more importantly how important will it be to the team and him regarding seeding to wrestle in both of those matches.

Crucial in terms of winning the dual meets and I actually will be back in Ohio at that time, so I am going to see the Iowa meet. Iowa will likely give us a much stiffer test I think than PSU due to matchups...both Retherford and Megaludis are redshirting, so PSU will actually be pretty down this year. In terms of the overall picture, we need a healthy Hunter in February way more than we do in January to make a run for the title. But if he is not back by January 4, it could well be the deciding factor for the Iowa dual. But everyone seems confident he will be back by then.

But for Iowa, I see it like this (assuming everyone else is healthy): 125 will be close with Gilman vs. Tomasello (though I like Toms), 133 very close with DiJulius vs. Clark (could go either way), 141 Logan likely gets bonus points over Dziewa, 149 Hunter could get bonus points on Grothus but I doubt Languis or anyone else there would win (Languis is supposed to drop to there until Hunter is healthy, which would help prevent bonus points for Iowa), 157 Demas should get bonus points even though he refuses to win by more than a point or two (nobody ranked in the top 20 for Iowa there), 165 Bo will likely have a close one with Nick Moore (I think Bo wins though, Moore is very similar to Massa), 174 Martin will likely loose to Mike Evans and hopefully no bonus points (Martin is a wildcard though if he actually wrestles to his potential), 184 will be very close with Courts and Brooks (could go either way), 197 looks close on paper with Snyder against the #6 Burak but Snyder is better than everyone there other than maybe Cox/Schiller (and maybe better than them, we will see), and at HWT hopefully we can avoid getting pinned whether it is Tav or Haines.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Four student-athletes have signed National Letters of Intent to future their academic and athletic careers as members of the Ohio State wrestling program, head coach Tom Ryan announced today. The newest Buckeyes are Jose Rodriguez Colon, Kollin Moore, Ke-Shawn Hayes and Myles Martin.

"Another recruiting class of disciplined men will chase their dreams in Columbus, Ohio,” said Ryan. “These men understand the necessities that allow for sustained success. We kept two of Ohio’s best at home and grabbed the best from Missouri and the best from the Garden State. All of these men trained under coaches that taught them well. All of them live in households that taught them to be accountable. They fit right in with the Buckeye Way. This class will continue to keep us in the conversation as America’s top wrestling program as we strive to bring NCAA team titles to Columbus.”
