Ohio State Wrestling (2015/2017/2018 B1G Champs, 2015 National Champs, 2019 National Runners-up)

No. 6 Ohio State 22, (5-0), No. 9 Pittsburgh 9, (3-1)
Dec. 9, 2011
Fitzgerald Field House
Pittsburgh, Pa.

http://www.ohiostatebuckeyes.com/sports/m-wrestl/recaps/120911aaa.html

165 ? Derek Garcia DEC Tyler Wilps (Pitt), 7-5

Wilps isn't too good, but a win is a win, and will hopefully help Garcia build some confidence going forward.

174 ? No. 5 Nick Heflin DEC No. 20 Ethan Headlee (Pitt), 8-2

A nice win for Nick here, and he actually put up some points! Headlee pinned Heflin in the dual last year after Nick hurt his back, so this win had to be nice. A positive sign here.

184 ? No. 15 C.J. Magrum MAJ DEC Max Thomusseit (Pitt), 13-5

Thomusseit hasn't wrestled much this year, so be may be dealing with an injury, but he is a good wrestler and the major from Magrum was nice to see. He is looking very solid so far this season.

197 ? No. 6 Matt Wilps (Pitt) DEC Andrew Campolattano, 4-2

Not at all a bad result against a very good opponent like Wilps.

HWT- No. 16 Zac Thomusseit (Pitt) DEC No. 11 Peter Capone, 12-6

Pete seemed a bit out his element here, going up against a wrestler of his own size. Barely avoided the major.

125 ? No. 17 Anthony Zanetta (Pitt) DEC No. 13 Johnni Dijulius, 5-4

This was an odd match, in that Zanetta basically did squat and got the win. Two points on escapes, two on stalling, and a penalty point. Solid effort here from Johnni.

133 ? No. 3 Logan Stieber MAJ DEC No. 20 Shelton Mack (Pitt), 9-1

Ho hum.

141 ? No. 6 Hunter Stieber DEC Travis Shaffer (Pitt), 7-5

Shaffer gave Hunter a closer match than expected, but OSU got the win. A more dominant effort would have nice to see here, but a win's a win.

149 ? No. 15 Cam Tessari DEC No. 11 Tyler Nauman (Pitt), 6-3

Great win for Cam, as Nauman is very good and Cam controlled the entire match.

157 ? No. 19 Josh Demas DEC Donnie Tasser (Pitt), 8-6

Good to see Josh get back in the win column, even against someone like Tasser. Had the single working in this one.

Overall: Pitt is ranked #9 so a victory this dominant is great. However, other than Cam's win, nothing really stands out as impressive here.

No. 6 Ohio State 22 (6-0), No. 20 Kent State 15, (2-3)
Dec. 11, 2011
M.A.C. Center
Kent, Ohio

http://www.ohiostatebuckeyes.com/sports/m-wrestl/recaps/121111aaa.html

125 ? No. 2 Nicholas Bedelyon (Kent State) DEC No.13 Johnni Dijulius, 12-6

Johnni fought well here. He was only down 8-6 at the end of the second period and other than two moments where it looked like he lost his concentration just a bit, looked very good against an opponent as good as Bedelyon.

133 ? No. 3 Logan Stieber PINNED Troy Opfer (Kent State), 2:17

Ho hum.

141 ? No. 6 Hunter Stieber MAJ DEC No. 13 Tyler Small (Kent State), 11-2

After a less than great win against Pitt, Hunter turned it up big time here, majoring a very solid wrestler in Small. Hunter beat Small 6-2 in Vegas which I thought was a good win at the time, so this is even better. He is looking like a very strong AA candidate right now.

149 ? No. 18 Ian Miller (Kent State) DEC No. 15 Cam Tessari, 9-5

A highly anticipated and very exciting match, Cam happened to come out on the wrong side of it. Miller scored 7 points in wild flurry of events where it looked very much like he illegally slammed Cam, as Miller drove Cam's head into the mat. It wasn't called, and that was basically the match.

157 ? Mallie Shuster (Kent State) DEC No. 19 Josh Demas, 6-1

The single was not working here for Demas, and Shuster made him pay.

165 ? Tommy Sasfy (Kent State) DEC Derek Garcia, 6-1

A setback for Garcia. Yes, he is still getting used to wrestling again after two years off due to injury, but if he can't beat Sasfy it's hard to imagine him winning too many in the B1G.

174 ? No. 5 Nick Heflin DEC Brandonn Johnson (Kent State), 8-3

An ok win for Nick. Bonus would have been nice, but Nick rarely does that and he looks like he might be less than 100% right now.

184 ? No. 15 C.J. Magrum PINNED Kwan Bailey (Kent State), 6:28

C.J. could have dominated a bit more against Kent's backup, but ultimately he got the job done.

197 ? Andrew Campolattano DEC Keith Witt (Kent State), 8-2

Good win, but could have been better. Camp was ridden out the entire 3rd period and didn't get the major because of it.

HWT ? No. 15 Brendan Barlow (Kent State) DEC No. 11 Peter Capone, 6-3

This was an incredibly exciting match. Sadly, Pete lost. Barlow led 4-3 late in the third, but Capone had the riding point, so basically tied. Then Barlow hit a TD with about 15 seconds left to win.

Overall: Some nice things, but OSU is going to need to keep getting better if they want to compete at the top of the conference.

Ohio State 31 Indiana 9

Stiebler brother at it again:)
COLUMBUS, Ohio-
Behind seven wins and an Indiana forfeit, the No. 6 Ohio State wrestling team defeated the Hoosiers, 31-9, in both teams' Big Ten Conference opener Sunday afternoon in St. John Arena. The Buckeyes remain undefeated with a 7-0 record and are now 1-0 in the league, while Indiana falls to 6-1 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
Bonus points scored by redshirt freshman Logan Stieber (133 pounds) and freshman Derek Garcia (165 pounds) helped the Scarlet and Gray end the 2011 portion of their schedule on a high note. Ohio State will not compete again until after the New Year when it travels to Nebraska for an 8 p.m. ET matchup Jan. 6 in Lincoln. The match will air on BTN.com.

spacer.gif

The afternoon began with the 133-pound bout and for the second consecutive match, L. Stieber pinned his opponent, this time downing Joe Duca in 1:26. Last Sunday at Kent State, L. Stieber pinned Troy Opfer in 2:17. L. Stieber, a native of Monroeville, Ohio, remains undefeated on the season with a 16-0 overall record, including a 7-0 mark in dual competition.

With the Buckeyes up 6-0 early, freshman Hunter Stieber (141 pounds) earned his 15th win (15-2 overall; 6-1 dual) of the season when he beat Matt Ortega, 6-1. H. Stieber gave up the lone escape to Ortega in the first period after scoring a takedown in the opening 35 seconds. H. Stieber tacked on another takedown and escape for the win.

Receiving the start at 149 pounds, redshirt freshman Alex Gordon (4-6 overall; 0-1 dual) was pinned by Taylor Walsh and the Hoosier win helped them cut the Buckeye lead to just three. However, the Scarlet and Gray jumped back into the win column after four consecutive victories, including a forfeit at 174 pounds.

Redshirt freshman Josh Demas scored a 6-3 win at 157 pounds over Ryan Konz. A Columbus, Ohio, native who attended Westerville North High School, Demas' escape and takedown in the third period secured his 14th win of the season after the score was knotted up at 3 a piece entering the final period. Demas is now 14-5 overall and 5-2 in dual action.
Garcia (9-5 overall; 4-3 dual), who hails from Sedro Woolley, Wash., had the most impressive outing of the afternoon when he shut out Anthony Fretwell, 11-0. A trio of takedowns, 3-point nearfall, escape and riding time of 4:25 helped the Buckeyes jump out to a 16-6 advantage at the halfway point.

Because Indiana forfeited the 174-pound match, Ohio State then took a commanding 22-6 lead entering the 184-pound bout between redshirt junior C.J. Magrum (14-3 overall; 7-0 dual) and Lucas Sheridan. An Oak Harbor, Ohio, native, Magrum owned slim 2-1 and 4-3 leads at the end of the first and second periods, respectively. However, Magrum scored an escape in the opening seven seconds of the third period for the 5-3 lead and that was enough for the win.

Freshman Andrew Campolattano (10-6 overall; 4-3 dual) faced fifth ranked Matt Powless at 197 pounds and nearly pulled off the upset. With both wrestlers tied, 6-6, with 17 seconds left in the match, Campolattano, a Bound Brook, N.J., native needed a takedown for the win because Powless held the riding time advantage (1:17). Campolattano could not get the takedown and Powless edged the Buckeye, 7-6.
Heavyweights Peter Capone (11-5 overall; 5-2 dual) and Jowan Gill faced off with the Buckeye from Johnson City, N.Y., earning the 7-0 victory. After a scoreless first and second period, Capone scored a reversal and a pair of 2-point nearfalls for the win. Capone also accrued 1:46 worth of riding time.

Freshman Johnni Dijulius from Aurora, Ohio, concluded the afternoon with a 10-3 win vs. Zach Zimmer. Dijulius held a 5-1 lead at the end of the first period and continued his impressive efforts after scoring an escape and two-point nearfall in the second. One last escape, plus a 1:16 of riding time in the third period gave Dijulius his 12th win of the season (12-7 overall; 4-3 dual).

Chris Phillips to Ohio State!

http://www.buckeyewrestling.com/?q=node/44204

In Ohio high school wrestling, the Monroeville Four are as legendary as the Beatles.

Logan Stieber, Hunter Stieber, Cam Tessari, and Chris Phillips each won four individual state titles at Monroeville HS and together they helped the Eagles win the 2010 team state championship. When it came time to choose a college, Logan decided to attend Ohio State, Hunter and Cam followed him a year later, and Chris elected to go to North Carolina State. After spending part of the summer in Raleigh, Phillips decided he wanted to be closer to home and is currently in the process of transferring to Ohio State.

?I want to thank NC State for offering me a scholarship and the opportunity to get a quality education and wrestle in college. They have a great school, a great coaching staff, and a great community. Making a decision to transfer schools to be closer to home was not easy and I truly appreciate all of their support and guidance in granting my release and helping me through the transition process,? stated Phillips.

Chris has relocated to central Ohio and is currently taking classes part-time at Columbus State and training with the Ohio Regional Training Center. He is planning on enrolling full-time at Ohio State in the spring and he will have five years to complete his four seasons of eligibility.

Cont.

Great to have the entire Monroeville Four at OSU and great to add a wrestler of Chris' caliber. Phillips was ranked as the 11th overall prospect and #2 at 174 in 2011 by D1Collegewrestling.

The depth of the OSU lineup only two years after barely fielding a team last year is amazing. By weight:

125: DiJulius (if he can hold 125), Roberts, (Triggas if he returns after his two redshirt seasons), Visconti
133: L. Stieber, Paddock, DiJulius
141: H. Stieber, Paddock, Languis
149: Tessari, Languis
157: Demas, Garcia
165: Garcia, Phillips
174: Heflin, Martin, Phillips
184: Magrum, Courts
197: Campolattano
HVY: Capone, Tavanello

OSU has two big duals coming up this weekend against Nebraska and Minnesota.

http://www.ohiostatebuckeyes.com/sports/m-wrestl/spec-rel/010512aaa.html

No. 6 Ohio State (7-0; 1-0 Big Ten) at No. 14 Nebraska (9-0; 0-0 Big Ten)
8 p.m. ET Friday Jan. 6, 2012
NU Coliseum Lincoln, Neb.
Broadcast: BTN.com

Predictions:

125 ? No. 15 Johnni Dijulius MDec Shawn Nagel 4-0

Johnni should have no trouble with Nagel, but getting bonus could be very important here.

133 ? No. 2 Logan Stieber PIN No. 19 Ridge Kiley 10-0

A major is the safe call, but I think Logan gets what could be a much needed pin.

141 - No. 6 Hunter Stieber Dec No. 7 Jake Sueflohn 13-0

I think Sueflohn is a bit overrated. Hunter wins comfortably by decision.

149 - No. 16 Cam Tessari Dec Brandon Wilbourn 16-0

This will be Cam's first match back since getting dropped on his head against Kent. Hopefully everything is fine. If it is, he wins over a solid Wilbourn.

157 - No. 10 James Green MDec Josh Demas 16-4

James Green has had a very nice freshman year so far, while Demas has been cold of late. Josh should be able to keep this close, but with the way he's been going lately I'm not sure.

165 - No. 3 Robert Kokesh MDec Derek Garcia 16-8

Garcia has been looking a bit better, but Kokesh should win easily here. Garcia needs to make sure he doesn't get pinned. Holding this to a decision will be a good performance.

174 - No. 5 Nick Heflin Dec Tyler Koehn 19-8

Heflin may have been dealing with some injuries, but even if he's not back to 100% he should beat Koehn, likely in typical Heflin low scoring style.

184 - No. 7 Josh Ihnen Dec No. 12 C.J. Magrum 19-11

Winnable match for Magrum, but Ihnen is the clear favorite. If C.J. wins or is in this one to the end I'll be very happy. Ihnen has kept it close twice with LeBlanc, who soundly beat Magrum.

197 - James Nakashima Dec Andrew Campolattano 19-14

This is the type of match Camp should be winning, but hasn't yet. He has all the ability (as seen against Powless), but needs to put the whole thing together. He should win, but I don't know if he will against the experienced Nakashima.

HVY - No. 9 Tucker Lane Dec No. 17 Peter Capone 19-17

Capone has battled well all year, but it's still hard for me to predict him to knock off these top ranked heavyweights. Not getting caught in a bad spot where he can pinned will be crucial.

No. 6 Ohio State (7-0; 1-0 Big Ten) at No. 3 Minnesota (4-2; 1-0 Big Ten)
2 p.m. ET Sunday Jan. 8, 2012
Sports Pavilion Minneapolis, Minn.
Broadcast: Gopher All Access

Predictions:

125 - No. 1 Zach Sanders Dec. No. 15 Johnni DiJulius 0-3

Sanders could very well major here, but I think Johnni has the style to keep the scoring down.

133 - No. 2 Logan Stieber MDec. No. 8 David Thorn 4-3

A decision is the safe bet here, but I haven't been that impressed by Thorn. I think a pin is definitely in play, but I'm being conservative here.

141 - No. 6 Hunter Stieber MDec. No. 15 Nick Dardanes 8-3

Not being conservative here, though. Also haven't been too impressed with Dardanes, and with OSU needing some bonus if they want to win this dual, I think Hunter pushes for the major.

149 - No. 9 Dylan Ness Dec. No. 16 Cam Tessari 8-6

Definitely a winnable match for Cam, perhaps more even than many believe, but with Cam coming off the head drop, I'm taking Ness.

157 - Josh Demas Dec. Alec Ortiz 11-6

Ortiz isn't very good. Is Zilverberg is able to come back from his injury, this could go Minny's way. Deitchler's career is sadly over due to concussions.

165 - No. 6 Cody Yohn Dec. Derek Garcia 11-9

Yohn doesn't score a ton, which is the only reason I have this as a decision.

174 - No. 11 Logan Storley Dec. No. 5 Nick Heflin 11-12

I'm picking the upset here. As I said above, Heflin may be a bit banged up, and he really hasn't beaten anyone of note this year. As always, this will be close, but if Nick is just a bit off his game he can easily end up losing by making just one mistake with the lack of action in all his matches. Hope I'm wrong, because OSU needs this match to have any hope of winning.

184 - No. 8 Kevin Steinhaus Dec. No. 12 C.J. Magrum 11-15

Magrum lost by two to Steinhaus in last year's dual, and Steinhaus just lost to Reburtus, who Magrum is 1-1 against this year, but I'm going to give Steinhaus the nod as I think he's a bit better and he's at home. Magrum also appeared to hurt is leg against IU, so that may be an issue as well. I'd love to see C.J. get his first really big win here, though.

197 - No. 2 Sonny Yohn Dec. Andrew Campolattano 11-18

Camp nearly beat Powless, can he do it against Yohn? I don't think so, but if he wrestles well, it can certainly be a great match.

HVY - No. 4 Tony Nelson Dec. No. 17 Peter Capone 11-21

I think Nelson wins this easily and will be happy if Capone keeps this a decision.

Buckeyes in a tough one v UNL. 10-10 heading into Kokesh-Garcia and this one isn't starter well either.
Down 14-10. Need a big one from Heflin especially with stkoran predicting losses in the remaining two matches.
Down 18-13 headed into the last match.
Campolattano wins but the Bucks lose 18-16.

The next match against MN should be interesting.

More regarding the loss to Nebraska

I guess the loss by Hunter Stiebler really hurt us but other guys need to step up. Going to Minnesota will not be pleasant.
COLUMBUS, Ohio? Despite splitting wins with No. 14 Nebraska, the sixth-ranked Ohio State wrestling team was edged by the Huskers (10-0; 1-0 Big Ten), 18-16, Friday night at NU Coliseum in Lincoln. The Buckeyes (7-1; 1-1 Big Ten) will look to answer their first loss of the season with a win at No. 3 Minnesota at 2 p.m. ET Sunday at the Sports Pavilion in Minneapolis (Click HERE for Gopher All Access to view the match).

Johnni Dijulius, Logan Stieber, Cam Tessari, Nick Heflin and Andrew Campolattano earned wins for the Scarlet and Gray, but bonus points scored by Nebraska proved to be the difference maker. Of the five wins by the Huskers, three were major decisions, while the Buckeyes posted four decisions and one major decision.

Ohio State trailed early in the match, 3-0, after No. 17 and redshirt sophomore Peter Capone (Johnson City. N.Y./11-6; 1-1 Big Ten) suffered a 4-1 setback to ninth-ranked Tucker Lane at heavyweight. However, Dijulius, ranked 15th in the nation at 125 pounds, pushed the Buckeyes into the lead when he recorded an 11-3 major decision over Shawn Nagel. With the win, the Aurora, Ohio, native improves to 13-7 overall and 2-0 in the Big Ten.

Redshirt freshman Stieber, who moved up in the individual InterMat rankings to No. 2 at 133 pounds this week, remained perfect on the season at 17-0. The Monroeville, Ohio, native, downed No. 19 Ridge Kiley, 8-2, to improve his dual record and Big Ten marks to 8-0 and 2-0, respectively.

spacer.gif

With the Buckeyes owning a slim 7-3 advantage, No. 6 Hunter Stieber and Nebraska?s No. 7 Jake Sueflohn were up next at 141 pounds. In just his third loss of the season (15-3 overall; 1-1 Big Ten), the Buckeye freshman from Monroeville, lost, 10-2, and the Huskers and Buckeyes were tied, 7-7.

A takedown in overtime by the freshman Tessari helped propel Ohio State back into the lead (10-7) following the 149-pound match. Tessari, ranked 16th and also a native of Monroeville, and Brandon Wilbourn scored an escape each during regulation before the dramatic finish by the Buckeye. Tessari improves to 13-5 overall and 1-0 in the conference.

Nebraksa 18 defeats Ohio State 16

HWT - No. 9 Tucker Lane DEC No. 17 Peter Capone, 4-1

Capone hung in there and Lane is quite good. This loss was expected and Capone's performance was fine.

125 - No. 15 Johnni Dijulius MAJ DEC Shawn Nagel, 11-3

Nagel is not very good, but came out and got the opening TD. From there on it was all Johnni, as he did was he needed to do and got the major.

133 - No. 2 Logan Stieber DEC No. 19 Ridge Kiley, 8-2

Logan dominated, but wins only by decision. On several occasions it appeared that Logan had or was about to get a near fall, but the ref felt otherwise, in addition to stoppages for potentially dangerous. Regardless, Logan needed to get bonus here and should have adjusted his strategy and went after some more TDs.

141 - No. 7 Jake Sueflohn MAJ DEC No. 6 Hunter Stieber, 10-2

Oofff. This one hurts. I felt very confident that Hunter would beat Sueflohn, as Hunter's results have been much more impressive this year. Hunter started with a bang, scoring the first TD, and like his brother, coming close to several near falls that he was not awarded. In another attempted turn towards the end of the first period Hunter fell out of position and was reversed. From there it was all Sueflohn. Hopefully this was just an aberration and not due to injury or something else. Will be very interesting to see how he does against Dardanes tomorrow.

149 - No. 16 Cam Tessari DEC Brandon Wilbourn, 3-1ot

This was quite boring. Wilbourn is ok, but this is match that Cam should win easily and I would have liked to have seen a bit more. Glad to see him back in the lineup, though.

157 - No. 10 James Green DEC Josh Demas, 7-4

Nice effort from Demas here, as Green has been wrestling really well. Josh needs to work on generating more offense, but this was not a bad loss at all.

165 - No. 3 Robert Kokesh MAJ DEC Derek Garcia, 9-1

This was expected, but I had hoped to see a little more from Garcia.

174 - No. 5 Nick Heflin DEC Tyler Koehn, 6-2

Good win for Heflin. Koehn is a solid opponent and Nick rarely scores bonus, but was a bit more active here. Glad to see him looking healthy. Storley will provide a much stiffer test tomorrow.

184 - No. 7 Josh Ihnen MAJ DEC Craig Thomas, 12-0

Well this is no good. Magrum's injury must be somewhat serious if he hasn't recovered since IU. With C.J. out, this match went from a Nebraksa decision/potential OSU win to a bonus point certainty for Nebraska. Give Thomas credit, he didn't get pinned and gave OSU a chance to win with a Camp pin.

197 - Andrew Campolattano DEC James Nakashima, 5-3

Really good win for Camp. He was in control and did what he had to do, putting the match away with a 3rd period TD.

Overall, this was expected to be a close match, but OSU was the favorite. They split the matches 5-5, but bonus was the difference. Hunter getting majored was clearly unexpected. There's a point. If Garcia can keep that score to 8-1 there's another point. If Magrum wrestles, there's another point. No bonus from Logan. Oh well, this is a very young team that has been wrestling very well so far. Outside of Hunter's loss (and Magrum's apparent injury), this was not that bad of an effort, on the road no less. Let's see how they respond at Minnesota. No rest for the weary.
