Oklahoma Sooners (official thread)

I really hope this is just a ploy to get more money out of the A's. His earning potential in the NFL is about 10% of what it is in the MLB. One season in the NFL might ruin him when he gets blindsided by someone twice his size. He has the perfect build for baseball.

Meh... I really could not care one bit less.

Yup - he's almost exactly the same size as Mookie Betts and Mookie just won the MVP (and should have won it back to back). Mookie is a great player but he's 5'8 at best in spikes and Murray is no bigger. He's not an NFL player. I agree if this is anything other than a ploy to get more money out of the A's it's dumb.

I kinda hope the A's call his bluff.

Baker runs to throw and was improbably accurate.

Kyler runs to run (and bails a lot earlier than Baker) and is occasionally accurate. He's a terrific athlete but the Baker comparisons are pretty off-base.
"Occasionally" is far from the word I would use to describe Kyler's throwing when he had a higher efficiency rating during his Heisman year than Baker's.

Overstated a bit, perhaps. I don't mean to confuse him with Jalen Hurts, but their efficiency as pure passers when you take away their feet is different.

Of course we barely saw that because Kyler is a speed demon and didn't really face much defensive resistance. No one ever notices bad defense when it's protected by great offense, see AL, OU, etc. Of course, they do hold it against you in the B1G. Look out for that if you ever join our ranks.

About the comparisons to Baker Mayfield? Well Kyler spent two seasons learning behind Mayfield and was coached by the same offensive guru/wizard in Lincoln Riley for two seasons in Norman. Both are products of Texas high school football and both have lead their teams to state titles (Murray went 42-0 at Allen High School), and both players are now Heisman winners. Both are short in stature, but one quarterback is freakishly fast and one is just a very damn good and efficient passer who's just a tad over 6 feet.

Are the comparisons between the two a little off? Maybe. But both quarterbacks have taken VERY similar paths through Norman en route to the NFL.

About whether Kyler runs to pass the same way Baker does. The purpose of their feet is different. Conversely, Baker can't scorch you the way Kyler can (while being a solid athlete nonetheless).

This is the key. It's not that Kyler is an option QB who can throw a little. It's that he's a runner with surprisingly good throwing ability. If you take away his feet he becomes a very different weapon. That's not the case with Baker.

Derek Green leaving Oklahoma to enlist in Navy

At least in this case, the call to serve one’s country has overpowered the desire to play college football at its highest level.

In mid-December of last year, Derek Green signed with Oklahoma as part of its 2019 recruiting class; Feb. 6, he enrolled in classes at the university. Wednesday, however, Green confirmed to multiple media outlets, including 247Sports.com, that he has decided to leave OU and enlist in the U.S. Navy.

2019 signee who left Oklahoma for the military will instead transfer to another school

Never mind, I guess.

Earlier this month, Derek Green, a member of Oklahoma’s 2019 recruiting class, revealed that he would be pursuing a career in the military instead of a career in college football.

“I don’t want to waste anybody’s time,” Green said at the time, “because Oklahoma has a great group of guys on that defense that’s there and coming in and I want them to be successful and they can spend more time developing them while I try to serve my country.”

Green also confirmed at the time that he would be placing his name into the NCAA transfer database, although “that’s just in case I want to go back to it later, but as of right now I’m going to serve my country.”

Fast-forward a few days, and Green announced via Twitter that he will be putting his military career on hold and transferring to a football program other than the one with which he signed back in December.
