OL Orlando Pace (7-time Pro Bowler, Super Bowl Champion, CFB HOF, NFL HOF)

I love O-Pace but I kinda wish he had retired after STL released him. Watching arguably the best o-lineman I have ever seen get beat repeatedly is sad to see, because this isn't the beast who dominated at his position for over a decade.

Jared Allen is just toying with him today. Father Time catches up with all of us. :(

Good luck the rest of the way, Orlando.

Sad to see and sad to say. This kind of performance was something you could telegraph from early in the season when he was repeatedly slow against smaller, faster D-ends.
I'd love to see him prove us all wrong with brilliant finale to astoried career, though ...

Groin strain may sideline Chicago Bears tackle Orlando Pace
Briggs expected back despite knee sprain
Alex Brown December 1, 2009

There is a strong chance Bears left tackle Orlando Pace won't face his former team Sunday as he continues to recover from a groin strain, a league source said Monday.

Pace suffered the injury in the third quarter of the Bears' 36-10 loss Sunday to the Vikings.

He was evaluated Monday and could miss Sunday's matchup against the Rams, the team he spent 12 seasons with before signing with the Bears.

Coach Lovie Smith did not rule out giving right tackle Chris Williams a shot at his natural left-tackle spot if Pace is sidelined, although Kevin Shaffer replaced Pace against the Vikings. Williams is considered the left tackle of the future.

Pace, 34, is certain to have some emotions when he sees his former teammates. He won a Super Bowl with the Rams, but St. Louis cut the seven-time Pro Bowler after last season.

"I've never been bitter with the Rams, even when I got released," Pace said. "I kind of knew it was going to happen. We talked about it.

"They looked at the salary cap and they needed to make changes. They needed to save room. They needed to move forward. I was OK with that. ... It was almost like a mutual thing."

Pace takes measure of small triumphs

ST. LOUIS ? As a rookie last year, Rams defensive end Chris Long spent long days at practice banging heads with veteran tackle Orlando Pace. It was quite a tutorial for the youngster.

"He's such a good player and he's so physically gifted: great feet, long arms and tough to get around," Long said. "It was a lot of fun to go against him all the time, him being a legend and having played so long."

The legend is lagging a bit, though. Released on April 2, Pace is struggling in Chicago ? where the Rams will meet the Bears on Sunday ? in his 13th NFL season.

"Orlando's been OK," Bears coach Lovie Smith said. "Our football team is 4-7, so no one has really played well. Orlando's a part of that."

Not exactly a ringing endorsement for a seven-time Pro Bowler and former No. 1 overall pick in the draft. But Pace is 34 now, and a variety of injuries in recent years have chipped away at him.

The latest, a groin strain, could keep him on the sideline Sunday. He also missed part of an earlier game with a mild concussion.

Yet he's started all 11 contests, which he considers a triumph after missing chunks of the previous three seasons in St. Louis. "I just wanted to play football and stay on the field," Pace said. "I've done a pretty good job of that this year, so I'm really happy about that."

Still, the wear and tear has taken its toll. According to STATS LLC, Pace has given up three sacks and has been called for two holding penalties and three false starts. NFL Network analyst Jamie Dukes, who spent 10 years in the league as an offensive lineman, noted that the 6-foot-7, 325-pound Pace has difficulty dealing with smaller, faster defenders.

"As a big, tall guy, as you get older, it's hard for you to bend your knees," Dukes told the Chicago Tribune. "So those little, short guys give you trouble."

Also, left tackle Orlando Pace is scheduled to return from a groin injury. That could present an interesting scenario, with former right tackle Chris Williams moving to left tackle in place of Pace against the Rams. Coach Lovie Smith said Williams looked like a "natural" on the left side.

"We will put guys in positions we think gives us the best chance to win on the weekend," Smith said. "First off with Orlando, we need to see if he's healthy. We'll start making those types of decisions (Wednesday)."

Williams is the left tackle of the future, but Pace has no immediate plans to retire.

"I feel pretty good right now, so I feel I can play," Pace said of his health. "I signed a three-year deal."

Chicago Bears left tackle working with second team; future with team beyond season appears doubtful

Give Orlando Pace credit for showing some class.

Most veterans would take exception to a demotion, but the Bears left tackle walked off the Walter Payton Center practice field Wednesday with a smile after lining up with the second-team offense.

Multiple sources said the 34-year-old Pace will remain in a backup role for the remainder of the season, barring injury to left tackle Chris Williams or right tackle Kevin Shaffer.

"I guess it's what I have to do," said Pace, who returned to full participation in practice off a groin injury. "I'm a competitor. Every athlete wants to be on the field. If the decision is made that it's like that, then I have to abide by it."

Williams took over as the starting left tackle after Pace missed the last two games with the groin strain. Offensive coordinator Ron Turner said last week that it would be hard to keep a healthy Pace out of the lineup.

The decision to bench the seven-time Pro Bowler might push Pace closer to retirement, although he said he feels healthy enough to keep playing. The Bears could release Pace, as they did veteran receiver Marty Booker at the end of last season.

"I feel good, my body feels good," Pace said. "I re-evaluate things every year."

Pace, who the Rams cut in March to save $6 million in salary-cap space, signed a three-year deal with the Bears potentially worth $15 million. His base salary is $1.35 million for this season, $3.75 million next season and $4.74 million in 2011. He has workout bonuses totaling $500,000 over the next two seasons, and Pace earned $4.65 million in bonuses this season.

The Bears drafted the 24-year-old Williams with the 14th overall pick of the 2008 draft to be their left tackle of the future, but he had back surgery and missed the first seven games of his rookie season. Williams was moved to right tackle to accommodate Pace's arrival. The experiment, however, didn't go as smoothly as planned.

Oddly enough, the numbers don't indict Pace as much as many might figure. According to STATS, Pace has given up three of the Bears' 26 sacks in 11 starts, while Williams has surrendered seven in 13. Williams also has a team-high eight penalties with five false starts.

But the Bears are last in the league in rushing offense going into Sunday's game against the Ravens with an average of 85.8 rushing yards per game, and the left tackle must take some responsibility for that.

Regardless of his future role, Pace intends to help Williams master the left tackle position he once dominated. And Williams is willing to absorb advice from the likely Hall of Famer.

"Orlando's a professional and a great guy," Williams said. "And we're both here to do whatever the coaches ask us to do. For him to help me out, that's just the kind of guy he is."

Bears' Pace expected to be inactive Sunday
December 19, 2009
By Vaughn McClure

At least Orlando Pace won't have to worry about being worn down by the Bears' crazy weekend travel schedule.

The veteran left tackle is expected to be inactive when the Bears face the Ravens Sunday, according to a league source. Pace is listed as questionable for the game as he continues to recover from a groin injury, although he had full participation in practice all week.

Pace missed the previous two games with a groin strain and, in the process, lost his starting job to Chris Williams, the Bears' 2008 first-round draft pick. Williams, 24, is expected to remain the starter for the final three games in preparation for the future. The 34-year-old Pace could squeeze himself back into the lineup if either Williams or starting right tackle Kevin Shaffer suffers an injury.

The Bears might part ways with Pace at the end of the season. He signed a three-year, $15 million deal in April and had the potential to make $9 million over the next two seasons.

Orlando Pace undecided about next season
Chicago Bears veteran offensive tackle may call it quits

Orlando Pace hasn't complained a peep since being moved into a backup role at left tackle for first-round draft pick Chris Williams, and the future Pro Football Hall of Fame candidate will serve as the third tackle Sunday in Detroit in what could be his final NFL game.

"After the season I will re-evaluate and see how I feel, if it makes sense (to return in 2010), and if I even want to play," Pace said after practice Friday.

Pace, a seven-time Pro Bowl selection, injured his groin Nov. 29 at Minnesota and was inactive for three games before dressing but not playing Monday night. Returning as a backup and insurance plan to Williams might not interest him.

"I miss playing. I'm a player. I've been playing for a while so this is an adjustment for me," he said. "That's why I said I really have to re-evaluate what I want to do as far as my career goes. It's just one of those things. I understand the situation."

The 34-year-old was signed as a one- or two-year bridge after John Tait retired, and he allowed only three sacks in 11 starts. If Pace decides to walk away, the Bears will have to find a swing tackle and James Marten, recently promoted from the practice squad, is a candidate.

Pace is under contract through 2011 and is on the books next season for $3.75 million with a $250,000 workout bonus.

"That's definitely not an issue for me," he said. "I've done well in my career."

The greatest Buckeye I ever saw in person. It has been sad to watch him this year - his body is betraying him.

Makes me feel old to think that some of the greats that I watched in college are now all retired - Glenn, George, and now very likely Pace, Galloway, and Springs

The dollars and sense of Pace
By Sean Jensenon

Chicago Bears offensive tackle Orlando Pace said he hasn't made any decisions about his future.

"It was a rough season for everybody," Pace said. "You just never know. Guys just got to get back to work and see how it goes.

Asked directly if he's planning to come back, Pace said, "I have to reevaluate everything and take everything into account and see what works for me."

Pace said he hasn't made a decision. But the Bears may make one for him.

The Bears signed him to a three-year, $15 million deal last April, but the seven-time Pro Bowl tackle was benched after starting the team's first 11 games.

Pace is scheduled to make $3.75 million next season. But, the Bears structured his deal to protect themselves. If they release him, the Bears would only take a salary cap hit of about $666,000, a modest amount for a player of his pay scale.

Any word on how the Bears are dealing with Orlando Pace? Arre they considering cutting him, putting Chris Williams on LT and using Pace's salary to bulk up on the inside OL? -- Rory Rick, Copenhagen, Denmark

Chris Williams is going to be the Bears' left tackle in 2010, and that leaves Pace without a role. I would expect for him to be cut before the start of free agency.

Martz could factor in Pace's decision on future
February 3, 2010
By Brad Biggs

The arrival of Mike Martz as offensive coordinator could factor into tackle Orlando Pace's decision on whether to return for a second season with the Bears.

"I can't elaborate on that," Pace's agent Kennard McGuire said Wednesday.

Pace told the Tribune before the regular-season finale in Detroit that he was going to re-evaluate his situation before he made a decision on the future. The seven-time Pro Bowl performer was replaced at left tackle for the final month of the season after injuring a groin muscle at Minnesota on Nov. 29.

"I miss playing. I'm a player. I've been playing for a while so this is an adjustment for me,'' Pace said of watching from the sideline when he was healthy. "That's why I said I really have to re-evaluate what I want to do as far as my career goes. It's just one of those things. I understand the situation.''
