While we're on the subject, could the artists who mocked up Rebel Black Bear at least have made him, you know, black? They're not the (Rebel) -- Brown Bears. Yes, we're well aware that some black bears are actually brown. But some are also white or gray or even bluish. Are colors have joined numbers in being banned from the Ole Miss curriculum.

O.k. so what exactly in the fuck does a black bear have to do with being a rebel, football, reforming your image as a racist institution or anything else Ole Miss is trying to do?

The Admiral Akbar thing I got. A fucking rebel black bear? Really?

Actually it makes perfect sense:

The Florida Gators have a crocodile as their mascot.
The Auburn Tigers have an eagle as their mascot.
The Tennessee Volunteers have a smellhound as their mascot.
The Alabama Crimson Tide have an elephant as their mascot.
The Kentucky Wildcats had a cat with a cock in its mouth as their mascot.

Agreed... but not just in the black bear sense. I thought the point of this exercise was to actually make Ole Miss be able to white-wash (intended) its racist past.

Why is it not the "Black Bears?" Why any black kid would want to play for the "rebels" is beyond me.

Not that he needs any help, but I think Lucas could have further cemented his legacy by having the first fictional movie character mascot. Ok, maybe he doesn't need it, but I'd look at it as a way to reach out to new fans. Children and people unfamiliar with Star Wars would wonder where the hell Admiral Ackbar comes from, I see it as a way to branch out into other medias. The whole thing was silly, but it could have been fun to make it a reality. The Rebel bear? C'mon, boring! At least theres still some originality like the Buckeyes.

I'm not buying that Ackbar would have been the first. From 2005-09, Ntre Ame's sidelines featured Charlie the Hut.
