OSU Men's Basketball Recruiting/Projections/General Discussions

2018 Offers:
The guys mentioned below do not have Profiles listed below. The one guy Finke's brother plays for Illinois..
The Buckeyes already have one commitment in the 2018 class from Upper Arlington shooting guard Dane Goodwin. Ohio State has also reportedly offered the following 2018 prospects: Illinois shooting guard Tim Finke, Florida wing Giir Ring and Louisiana point guard Javonte Smart.

Kaleb Wesson mentioned that we were recruiting 2017 CG/SG Parker Stewart (TN), which I was not aware of. watching some video, seems like an intriguing possibility. we do need more guards and while he doesn't seem much of an athlete he has good size at 6'5 (though at least an inch of that might be his crazy hair) and seems pretty skilled.

Some of these guys already had the individual threads and I sure hope they are done with 2016.

• Assume Ohio State wants to use at least one of its open spots for 2017 on a point guard. So some targets include Markell Johnson, Troy Brown and Nojel Eastern.

• Other 2017 targets include SG Gary Trent Jr., SG D.J. Harvey, SG Lonnie Walker, SG Parker Stewart, PF Kyle Young and others. With the big man spot for 2017 held by Kaleb Wesson, and Potter and Funderburk signing for 2016, expect that third spot for 2017 to be reserved for a player who can play as the off-guard or on the wing.

Buckeyes may not be done in 2016, but the page is turning to 2017: Ohio State basketball recruiting

This is the type of kid we used it comes back to bite Matta and Ohio State. Has an offer from Sparty but is only a 3*but he is from Ohio and if history is any indicator we know what happens when Ohio players who are not very highly ranked go to MSU. Wants to make his decision before his senior year. He is a 6'6" wing player from Massillon Perry and plays with King James AAU.

What a Buckeyes offer to Kyle Young would mean: 7 thoughts on Ohio State basketball recruiting

if it were as simple as liking Kyle Young's game and thus offering him, Young would have an OSU offer already.

the issue is that we have two scholarship spots open for the class and we need guards and wings WAY more than we need forwards. we have Tate, KBD, Wesson, and Funderburk projected at Kyle's position group. at guard we may only have Jackson and Williams that season, and no underclassmen behind them (but that does mean we would have Lyle's scholarship open so 3 total, and I think the staff might be thinking like they have AT LEAST 3 spots to work with...but they also want to avoid creating logjams that players want to transfer out of).

I like Young a lot and if the staff feels good enough about him that they think he can play over some of the other forwards sooner than later, I'm sure they will offer soon. but as it stands I would take over him any two of Johnson, Eastern, Stewart, Chandler, Walker, etc...

another factor is that in the very next class we have started targeting some high-level OH forwards that we might like better in Jerome Hunter and Darius Bazley.

per Corey Albertson, OSU offered Kyle Young on an unofficial visit today. so there's that now.

Alex Gleitman already Crystal Balled him to OSU. hmm...

OHIO STATE COACHES DISCUSS IMPORTANCE OF RECRUITING TOP IN-STATE TALENT

70846_h.jpg,qitok=4-grsLJl.pagespeed.ce.kKDQ7OOlkJ.jpg

In the last six years, dating all the way back to 2011 and including 2016, Ohio State has signed four recruiting classes consisting of at least four players. There has never been a higher percentage of Ohio players than in the incoming 2016 class.

Three of the four Buckeyes signed for 2016 are from the home state in Derek Funderburk, Micah Potter and Andre Wesson. In 2015, it was just one out of five. In 2014, it was two of four and in 2011 there were five signees and none were from Ohio.

Ohio State seems as if it is getting back to its roots.

“Well, I think that without a doubt we would love to do that,” Buckeyes head coach Thad Matta said recently when asked if there was a bit more of an added emphasis on recruiting Ohio and the Midwest. “I think that a lot of times there is a lot more that goes into it than a real good basketball player in terms of kids from the Midwest. I think sometimes people forget the academic standards that we have at this university are probably as high if not higher than anybody in the Big Ten and I like that about it.

“There’s dynamics in terms of that, and it’s not always as easy as people think it is to recruit our own state. But we’ve had some great players from the state of Ohio, we’ve had some great players in the Midwest and hopefully we can continue to do that.”

Changed my mind and created a thread for Nick Weatherspoon.

Not going to create a full profile on this recruit because I think our chances are very slim with him and I am too lazy. I know we have gone into the South for some basketball talent but I cannot remember us getting a guy from Mississippi unless you want to count LaQuinton Ross who was originally from Mississippi but played most of his high school ball in New Jersey.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- With two spots currently left to fill in its 2017 recruiting class, the Ohio State basketball team needs to fill one with a guard.

There are a few in the class whom the Buckeyes have targeted. One has officially included Ohio State in his final list of schools.

Nick Weatherspoon, a four-star point guard from Camden, Miss., released a new graphic on Thursday morning with his top 10 schools that included Ohio State. The Buckeyes are there along with Indiana, North Carolina, Louisville, Georgetown, Memphis, LSU, Iowa State, North Carolina State and Mississippi State.
