OSU Men's Basketball Recruiting/Projections/General Discussions

Corey Evans reported on 6/30 that OSU offered him. Probably was offered on the visit.

i can't locate an offer for talen horton-tucker, but he expects to be visiting soon.

i like talen's game. he's listed as a small forward, but he looks to me like a power guard, if you will. his body is a little sloppy for the backcourt, but the athleticism is there and the playmaking ability is outstanding. you could say he has a little charles barkley in his stature and his game.

ayo has the stars and gets the publicity, but talen will be a match-up nightmare in college.

no nance. no bazley. no goodwin.

if holt misses out on hunter and cohill, too, the optics of batting .000 in ohio will not be particularly good. to be sure, osu doesn't look all that appealing right now.

I don't care much what state the players come from, so long as they are good and are committed to the team. I will be fine if they strike out on in-state guys in this class so long as they get a few strong prospects and address their needs. Hunter is my fave in-state guy, the others are all somewhat interchangeable with guys they are in on from OOS & not too different in terms of overall impact on a team. The rebuild may take a few years if they don't get Hunter. But I won't assume Holtmann will not fill his needs just because he misses out on a few recruits.

To me, the elite Ohio prospects are what can elevate OSU periodically to the top of college basketball, but this '18 Ohio class is not viewed as necessarily having that kind of talent. So I'm not going to be too put off by losing in-state recruits this year.

I'm sure we are going to miss out on all the Ohio prospects yet still manage to get 5 or 6 good players in this class, DZ.:roll2: Of course, Holtmann only wants 2 or 3 for this class, so we're still cooking.

I subscribe to the same philosophy as Mike Brey at Notre Dame, apparently. Already have Hubb and Carmody, but Goodwin wants in? Sure, why not? You take as many good players as you can get committed. Period.

Interesting recruitment by Goodwin; it was handled by Ryan Ayers, son of Randy. I saw Justin Ahrens got an offer from Vanderbilt the other day. The coach in charge of his recruitment? Jake Diebler.

You better recognize Thad is gone, and with him presumably the "we only sign good players in November" recruiting plan. Holtmann had a good team this past season in spite of having to patch together a backcourt with 3 transfers and one fairly unheralded freshman. I'm fairly confident Holtmann has the ability to cobble together enough talent to win even when Plan A's in recruiting don't pan out, even if you are not.

Thad always recruited transfers and JUCOs as well as HSer's, that's nothing new. We had Rodney Hood committed for a moment before he switched to Duke. I remember Othello Hunter, Je'Kel Foster, Evan Ravenel, Trevor Thompson, and CJ Jackson just off the top of my head. However, that's not the point. The point is that Gene said we needed better recruiting out of the basketball coach, particularly in Ohio. Like Buckguy said, going 0-for-5 in his first big class seems to be missing the target, no?

Again, I'll withhold judgment until I see the final group he assembles, his "Ohio State guys".

Whoa. You're giving credit to Matta for signing Foster and Hood? LOL. If only we all could take credit for things we didn't really do. Hunter was a fall signee. TT was a good get, but overwhelmingly the general trend was good players in November and reaches in the spring. 0 for Ohio is practically irrelevant if Chris gets good players that fill needs anyway.

Like you OH10, I'm a "little concerned". Not overly though. Allow me to explain. Prior to Thad's "retirement", his last couple of classes have not been the best. 2015- Every recruit gone. 2016 - Funderburk gone. (Potter, Wesson and C.J.)
2017 - Beverly gone (Wesson and Young (CH recruit). It's not like Matta was hitting homeruns on the recruiting trail and left CH much to work with plus he was just hired four weeks ago. Did a great job of getting Young into the fold for 2017.

As for the 2018 class, Bazley was gone due to the state of the program and the way he de-committed pretty much set the tone for his return which was not happening. Ahrens left and once he left that door closed. Goodwin is the only one I am perplexed about. Committed since he was a Freshman and then de-commits when a new hire was made. Could it have been a mutual parting? Could it have been a match to what CH was looking for in the players he wanted to recruit? OR was it when Dane de-committed that made CH question the young man's commitment to the Ohio State basketball team and had no interest in him returning? Who knows. One thing for certain, CH and staff has some work to do on the recruiting trail to get some players for the 2018 class.

I think the situation would be different if he was hired immediately after the season, however, I think if given time, the state of the program will be fine under his watch. GO BUCKEYES!!

Missing on Goodwin and Bazley so quickly after taking the job shows me that Coach Holt is not making great first impressions. Color me a little concerned.

You are overreaching by criticizing Chris for "missing" Bazley, who just got done publicly ripping the program to shreds 2 months ago. He has talent but that seems like an awfully difficult fence for any coach to mend, even ignoring the element of whether you should want a player on a team with guys he has basically said aren't good enough to play with him. Surely no one would have expected Matta to get him back in the fold, and I'm not sure why Chris is being held to a far higher standard.

Missing on a late hail mary is concerning because they may struggle to fill out the roster in the short term.

That said, it does not change the gigantic hole that Holtmann is recruiting from. Recruiting is about relationships and Chris has very little at his current spot. Bazley chose a much better program (and frankly wasn't coming back) and everyone else was right at the end of their process with other schools when he was inserted into the mix (and no, recruiting them at Butler is not a very good stepping stone).

The person continuing to make bad impressions is Gene Smith. It's not Holt's fault that Gene bumbled another crucial situation.
