OSU Men's Basketball Recruiting/Projections/General Discussions

I remember Frank Kaminsky was in that class. Point being, there are great prospects that can be developed in every class at every position. You just have to have an eye for players who can grow and teach them, don't just try to find the most college-ready players.

Sure, but Kaminsky was also in the T20 of his position on several services and a 4-star on ESPN. The staff, currently, has zero relationships with any available 2018 centers. So, like I said, they might get in on a late-blooming big if they really like that player's prospects and fit. Or they might decide the scholarship is better used on a grad transfer and work on building relationships more with 2019 and 2020 bigs.

spitballing recruiting based on these assumptions:

1. bates-diop available for 2018
2. ayala for 2017
3. hunter and a pf/c for 2018
4. francis for 2019
5. penn for 2020
6. no transfers in/out, no redshirts, and no early departures

1st year /// 2nd year /// 3rd year /// 4th year

thoughts:

1. providing ayala commits for 2017, i think the 2018 class goes no deeper than 3 commitments.
2. the 2018 team is well-rounded. a pure point guard would be nice in addition; however, there would be the risk of backcourt congestion for the successive seasons since francis and penn could be penciled in today.
3. a one-year grad transfer true point guard for 2018 appears to fit well. so does a pf/c grad transfer, especially since the coaching staff does not already have any existing relationships with frontcourt players.
4. the primary needs for the 2020 team are a frontcourt player and an athletic 6'6"ish wing.
5. the 2019 team presents no glaring positional need. as a result, the needs for the 2020 team (a 3 and a 4/5) may fit here.
6. though the prospect of a 2020 commitment should have little influence on whom you recruit this or next year, ayala for 2017 makes penn's fit much more comfortable.

caveat:

when a really good player wants to commit, roster balance be damned.

This would mean no Cohill and I just do not know if I can bring myself to that conclusion. The team overall would probably be better the way you have it formulated but I just do not know if Hartmann will leave Cohill out of this class if he wants to commit. I also see where a lot of bigger name programs (UNC) are showing a little bit of interest in Hunter.

I also see where a lot of bigger name programs (UNC) are showing a little bit of interest in Hunter.
my reasoning for excluding cohill is that he and ayala are pretty much the same player. both are combo guards with similar skill sets who project to move into full-time point guard roles. holtmann may not want to sign the same player for this class and next. moreover, cohill may not want to commit to osu after ayala. say ayala does commit. cohill's competition for backcourt playing time at the 1 and the 2 would have gone from jackson/beverly/goodwin/ahrens to jackson/ayala/jallow/watson. the experienced competition would have gone from jackson/beverly to jackson/ayala/jallow. the counterpoint is that the other programs' backcourts that cohill is considering may be no less congested.

what i'm also considering is holt's recent statements about a 10- or 11-man roster early on, as well as the '18 class going 3-deep (maybe 4). cohill after ayala (along with hunter and a pf/c) already takes the roster to 12. i think part of the reason that holtmann signed a long 8-year contract is that he wants the flexibility of a slower build.

now with all of that being stated... i'm not saying that i'm right. it's just how i see it right now. holt does run plenty of 3-guard sets, though, so two combo guards in the '17 and '18 classes won't at all shock me.

finally, in regards to hunter, by no means am i expecting him to commit to osu. the buckeyes may be the current favorite, but i don't think it's over 50%.

I honestly don't know if you can pen Jeremiah Francis in as an automatic. Penn in 20, yes, as long as nothing turns sour with Scoonie in the next couple of years, but Francis kind of views himself as an Indiana kid from his youth when his dad was bouncing around as a coach. He plays with Indy kids for AAU and has a good relationship with Painter at Purdue. We probably lead, but you never know.

you nailed that one… unfortunately
i appreciate that, but i think that if i had truly nailed it, i would not have listed hunter as a conjectured commit in the scholarship table. it's a bit of a fail when you consider how a player fits on ohio state's roster through 2020... only to see him commit to a rival the following day.
