"gentle, intelligent birds"? Have PETA's humans ever met a turkey? Next to flamingos, they are some of the biggest jerks in the avian world. Also, delicious.

It occurs to me that I've never eaten flamingo... but, think about it... Turkeys are jerks... taste good... geese are jerks... taste good. Flamingos are jerks... well, complete the pattern. (ostrich too, come to think about it... tasty jerks)

This times a bazillion. Their western cousins, the Stellar's Jays, are almost as awful.

However, the Florida scrub jay & gray jay are both polar opposites of those two.

God, you're a dork.

And how much meat is on a blue jay anyway?

I say we find out.

Not PETA, but I bet this brings a smile to Thump.

http://www.denverpost.com/breakingnews/ci_22273969/animal-rights-group-settles-lawsuit-ringling

WASHINGTON?An animal rights group will pay Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus $9.3 million to settle its part of a lawsuit stemming from claims the circus abused its elephants.

The circus company's owners announced the settlement with the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals on Friday. The animal rights group was one of several that in 2000 sued the circus' owner, Feld Entertainment Inc., claiming elephants were abused. Courts later found that the animal rights activists had paid a former Ringling employee to bring the lawsuit and that the man didn't have the right to sue the circus.

I almost put this in the Headlines thread, but remembered we had a few PETA centric threads so figured it should go here.

Will the real monkey who snapped those famous selfies please stand up?
Even if apes could own copyrights, PETA is representing wrong monkey, publisher says.

Yes, that's right, PETA is suing for copyright infringement on behalf of a monkey! Here's my favorite excerpt from the article.

"A monkey, an animal-rights organization, and a primatologist walk into federal court to sue for infringement of the monkey's claimed copyright. What seems like the setup for a punchline is really happening," attorney Andrew Dhuey wrote. He added that "monkey see, monkey sue is not good law..."

How this hasn't been tossed out of the court system already I have no idea. A monkey is incapable of holding a copyright, and couldn't direct counsel even if it could hold a copyright! What a waste of court time and public funds.

Activists storm field to protest hot dogs during Dodgers game

"The LA Dodgers relentlessly promote their 'Dodger Dogs' as fun, family-friendly fare," said DxE activist Zoe Rosenberg, "but the truth is that Dodger Dogs are made from piglets who were taken from their family, thrown into a massive prison, and tormented by disease and neglect that would horrify any family."

Ralph Lauren to stop using mohair in all garments

The retailer's announcement comes after backlash from animal rights groups who seek to keep the angora goats from being abused.

Goats have a new friend in Ralph Lauren.

The designer, under pressure from an animal rights group, has agreed to no longer use mohair in any of its products, The Post has learned.

The group, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, has been successful in persuading several apparel makers to drop mohair — sourced from angora goats — since they released an investigative report in early May* showing goats at a South Africa farm being abused.

Half the world’s supply of mohair comes from South Africa.

Nearly 300 brands and retailers — H&M, Zara, Gap, Ann Taylor, Brooks Brothers, Diane von Furstenberg and others — have dropped mohair from their lineup, PETA said.

How is sheering a goat any different from sheering a sheep? Do they want to ban the use of wool too?

For that matter isn't killing a goat to eat much more abusive to the goat than just sheering it? What's next, banning "sweet and sour goat"?
