An old article but I just stumbled across it...

Pet Underpopulation: The Pet Shortage in the US

Listen up! The notion that there is a "pet overpopulation" problem is nothing more than a figment of the imagination of the anti-pet, anti-pet owner, anti-pet breeder animal rights fanatics.

Yes, you read that correctly. There is definitely NOT an overpopulation of dogs or cats, at least not in the United States. There may have been a problem 25-30 years ago, but due to heavy promotion of spay and neuter, it is estimated that over 75% of dogs and more than 87% of cats have been surgically sterilized (1). The pendulum has swung so far in the opposite direction that now, we are actually facing a shortage of pets... a pet underpopulation.

Not sure I buy everything she's claiming but there is certainly some interesting info in the piece.

The fine folks down at the local kennels would likely disagree with her claims.

Feel free to cite.

Alternatively you could actually read the article to see what it says about the change in the types of animals being brought in to shelters.

So you're saying there are no strays in Columbus?

What do strays have to do with anything? I'm not going out to find a stray to adopt as a pet.

Two things, first there is more adoption demand than there are suitable* dogs in columbus

Second, if there were too many purebred dogs out there, they wouldn't be ridiculously expensive

*- I say suitable in that of course you can get a very large dog with behavior issues anytime. You can get a pit bull mix anytime. I can tell you that unless you pitch a tent and wait, you can't get a dog less than 15 lbs and under 3 yaers old from a shelter here. Long story short, suitability being in the eye of the beholder, no knock on pits or hyper labs.

There will always be bad animal owners, and that's too bad, but these laws don't keep them from being bad. Kind of like the gun control argument that only criminals would have guns.
