PF/C Kosta Koufos (CSKA Moscow)

Biggest Buckeye Can Step Outside

Could you imagine how cold and cruel it would have been for Ohio State opponents if 7-footers Greg Oden and Kosta Koufos were on the Buckeyes this season?

Oh, it would have been something to see, Oden doing work inside, sending shots off the backboard on the defensive end, powering down on the rim on the inside. And then you'd have Koufos swishing mid-range jumpers and threes, Euro-style. What team would have been able to defend that?

Oden, of course, went No. 1 in the NBA draft to Portland, but knee surgery has postponed his pro debut.

Koufos, an Ohioan with Greek roots averaging 15.8 points and 6.3 rebounds, is now leading a young team with the potential to be so much better. And as was the case with Oden, the Buckeyes' big guy will largely determine how it all shakes out.

Saturday would be a good time to get going.

Koufos and the unranked Buckeyes will host defending national champion and unranked Florida Saturday (Channel 3, 4 p.m.) in a rematch of last year's title game.

OSU men's basketball: Koufos learning to enjoy himself

The Columbus Dispatch

Five seconds from halftime, Kosta Koufos rebounded the basketball but unwisely held it away from his body. Florida guard Nick Calathes sneaked up from behind, knocked it loose and scored on a layup.

It wasn't the first time Calathes had done it. In fact, Koufos had seen him do it on tape as the Ohio State men's basketball team prepared for a game last Saturday against the Gators.

"I came in at halftime and he was apologizing," coach Thad Matta said, "and I'm like, 'For what?' "

For weeks, Matta had been trying to get Koufos to accept a simple truth about college basketball. The Buckeyes' precocious 7-foot freshman is, admirably, a perfectionist. Matta's message: "You're not going to play basketball perfect. You've got to get on to the next thing and keep moving."

It will be interesting to see if he declares for the draft after this season. I personally do not think he is ready and there are a lot of freshman wing players who will be taken in front of him. Not sure how high he is projected right now.

Personally...at this point in the season, I still see him as being a lottery pick. 7 footer with his offensive skills......

It is not a question of IF he is ready.....it is about potential. We all went through the same situation last year with Cook and Conley.

high-low with mullens and kosta...

im not sold on eithers ability to defend a four, lets just say that im pretty sold not many teams could defend that...

Plenty of length on the back end of that zone defense. :yow1:

But as I said there are a lot of freshmen wing players similar to Cook who also could be lottery picks. We shall see.

I just think he is a little soft and guys in the NBA will push them around quite a bit. I think another year of college would help him considerably.

Don't misunderstand my view of Kosta. I believe he needs another year but his game is more suited to the NBA and we all know they will draft on potential rather than production in the lottery round.

I am with Junkie here...His overall game is a little better suited for the NBA, and 7 footers with his offensive skill set don't grow on trees...

I think everyone would agree with us in saying that he could use another year in the development of his game, but with the way that the NBA drafts on potential it is not far fetched at all to think that KK could be a lottery pick...

I do think tho that he is getting used to the physical play some, and adjusting his game...Also the zone is so much better for him in terms of him not having to match up man to man with a lot of guys...
