THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

NEW YORK -- Humble and respectful by nature, Kosta Koufos did not let the big-city lights blind his perception of himself after quieting a hostile audience with his array of talents.
"God has blessed me," the 7-foot freshman said after outshining Syracuse's touted freshmen, Donte Greene and Jonny Flynn, in the Buckeyes' 79-65 victory over the Orange in a semifinal of the NIT Season Tip-Off on Wednesday.
In his third college game, Koufos had 24 points and nine rebounds -- career highs -- and two blocked shots in Madison Square Garden.
"He's a really good player," Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said.
But not yet a great one, Ohio State coach Thad Matta hastened to add when he was asked after the game how good Koufos is right now.

Buckeyes' Koufos making big strides

ASSOCIATED PRESS

NEW YORK - Ohio State coach Thad Matta doesn't want to anoint freshman Kosta Koufos as the next big thing just yet.

The 7-foot freshman scored a career-high 24 points to help the Buckeyes beat No. 21 Syracuse 79-65 on Wednesday night in the NIT Season Tip-Off semifinals.

"Time's going to tell," Matta said. "You spend 15 minutes with him and you know he's 18 years old. I really believe we do kids an injustice. He plays a good game and we blow him up."

Double Baseline Trouble: Othello Hunter and Kosta Koufos have given OSU something they haven't had before in the Matta era, two bona fide baseline players. With both Hunter and Koufos on the roster Matta can always have some size on the floor. What has been most surprising is the chemistry the two seem to have when they are on the floor together. Against Syracuse they each had assists to the other in a high-low set that will be tough for opponents to stop this season.
"We just try to do what we can to get easy shots down low," said Koufos.
Koufos did not hesitate when asked if teaming with Hunter has helped his game.
"Yes sir," said Koufos.
"Othello has been a great leader to me. After every practice he tells me the things I need to work on as well as Matt Terwilliger," said Koufos.

Man, Koufos is so awesome. I can't remember the last time I was more impressed by a performance than I was with how the team played on Wed night.

Kosta should go to the NBA next year; he's that good. The only reason he should even consider coming back is if he really loves Ohio State and wants to win a title here and play with B.J. Mullens. Other than that, he's good enough to make the jump.

Guy's really smooth and brings a different flavor offensively that I've never seen in college basketball.

I never thought he'd be as good as he has been. That is, leading our scorers and such. Kids really a great talent, and it's gonna come down to him and Butler for our tourney outcome. So far he's showed good shooting, rebounding, and such, and I think he can really be a force for us if he does infact, stay for a while.

Koufos named Big Ten player of the week

Monday, November 26, 2007 12:25 PM

Ohio State freshman Kosta Koufos today was named the Big Ten Conference men's basketball player of the week.
In three games, Koufos averaged 18.7 points, 9.3 rebounds and two blocks. The Buckeyes were 2-1 in those contests, including a victory over No. 21 Syracuse in Madison Square Garden. Koufos scored a career-high 24 points against the Orange.
Last night in Ohio State's victory over VMI, Koufos recorded his first career double-double with 22 points and 14 rebounds. He has reached double figures in scoring in every game for the Buckeyes (4-1) this season.

Tough game for the big guy but he will learn from this......I would like to see him in the paint a little more than what he has been so far this season. We need a consistent low post threat.
Totally agree but he really needs to become more physical to be a good post player. In a way, he sort of looks lost on offense or maybe I am but he just doesn't look like he knows if he should be inside or outside or.... I am afraid that if you does not become more physical we might lose more games than everybody thought we would. I know he is young but I guess I just expected more from everything that I have read about him. The Big 10 is a very physical conference and we really need him to step up.

KK is not your typical low post 7 footer obviously, but I feel like he needs to be more aggressive in the paint.....use that size to his advantage. Be physical......this is where he is struggling right now. He is allowing teams to push him away from the basket.......lack of experience hurt him last night, but he will learn from it. Coach Matta will ensure that.

If and when he becomes more physical will be the point where the team changes from having potential to being dangerous.
