PF/C Kosta Koufos (CSKA Moscow)

In general the University gets far more from the kids than they do from the University. But it sure would be nice if they considered the APR in their decision making. It is not so much to ask to finish a quarter of free classes - particularly when he could take pretty much whatever he chose. It is an act worthy of an eye roll and maybe a good head shake - but probably stops short of strong profanity or fist slamming.

Some BBall wins, some recruiting help and a small amount of money (to a university like OSU), versus being given the ability to provide for yourself and your family. Maybe I'm missing something, but I think the kids get more then the University when it comes to true value.

It is fault of the rule makes...

It is based on semesters instead of quarters...To be eligible for the NIT KK had to be enrolled for a week of school...

I mean others get out in early May...KK would have to stay in school till a week into June and that is the time when he needs to be traveling for workouts, meeting with teams, etc...Yes why it is hurting the school it is stupid to take it out on the kid who the rule is putting at a disadvantage...

Great post. I love how the NCAA uses these kids for a year then, damage the schools if the young men go PRO and stops going to classes. That makes a lot of sense:(

By and large kids like Koufas bring the talent that will provide security to their families with them. Coaches help develop it, but he was the #4 rated PF in the country before Matta got hold of him. He was offered 6 figures in Greece before OSU got hold of him. You can buy a lot of tuition for that kind of money.

So I would argue "small amount of money" is relative. If a kid like KK wasn't a net plus to the athletic department BBall would not be a money maker.

Buckeyes' Koufos will declare, won't hire agent

Ohio State 7-foot freshman Kosta Koufos will declare for the NBA draft, according to sources close to the situation.

Koufos is a skilled big man who averaged 14.4 points and 6.7 rebounds per game for the Buckeyes, but he struggled early in the season and still needs to get stronger before he can make an impact at the next level.
Sources told FOXSports.com that Koufos will not yet hire an agent.
He had 22 points and nine rebounds in Ohio State's victory against UMass in the NIT championship.
There has also been speculation that Koufos could sign a lucrative contract to play overseas in Greece ? where his mother is from ? if he isn't expected to go in the first half of the first round. The deadline for underclassmen to announce is April 27.

The thing is if he declares for the draft he will have to play for a rookie contract in the NBA at some point if my understanding is correct. Even if he says he's going to play in Greece someone will draft him and own his rights. He would be better off getting that out of the way so that he can make big money in a few years. I know it isn't in his best $$$ interest, but I would love for him to fall to the Cavs in the draft. Kosta would be the only non PG that I would like to see them draft. They are deep with bigs through next year, but after that Andy and Kosta would make a great big man combo. Kosta could probably learn from Z in a low pressure environment.

Kosta has far too much to learn to be an instant-rotation guy for the Cavs. Sorry, but with just 2 years remaining on Lebron's existing deal, they don't need projects like Kosta.

The thing is anyone at 19 in this draft is not going to be a superstar, they are going to be a project...That is why I am all for taking the BPA...I am really liking the 2 kansas guys right now in Arthur and Rush, but that is for another thread...

Honestly not sure where KK fits in at the NBA level...He has a solid pick n pop game, solid moves inside, soft touch from 18 ft, but lacks the basketball instincts and IQ to thrive yet...He is going to need to be taught to pass the ball out of double teams, or off the dribble, because in the NBa when teams see that they are going to swarm him...

KK will face much more athletic players than he is at the NBA level.....I think he will struggle early and often......he has much to improve on....
You are right on but unfortunately I think other people are telling him different. He would be so much better off staying one more year.

I'm not looking for a superstar. We have one of those. The Cavs need a rotation guy - someone that can come in and contribute immediately. They do not need a project guy like Koufos.

REPOSITORY STAFF REPORT

COLUMBUS Ohio State freshman Kosta Koufos will declare for the NBA draft but leave open the possibility to return to college men's basketball.

The 7-foot GlenOak High School graduate text messaged The Repository today confirming his intentions.

"I am declaring for the 2008 NBA Draft but not hiring an agent and maintaining my college eligibility," Koufos wrote.

Koufos averaged 14.4 points and 6.7 rebounds per game for the Buckeyes and came on strong at the end of the season. He was named most outstanding player of Ohio State's NIT championship, collecting 22 points and nine rebounds in the Buckeyes' win victory over Massachusetts.
