I'm not looking for a superstar. We have one of those. The Cavs need a rotation guy - someone that can come in and contribute immediately. They do not need a project guy like Koufos.

In the next 2 years they will need a big man that can score because everyone else except for hopefully Andy will be gone. We might want to take this to the mock draft thread if it is going to get away from KK. I'd like to hear your thoughts on what the Cavs should do.

He wants to be able to maintain his college eligibility but what about the going to class rumor? I would hope he is still going to class and trying to finish out the quarter, otherwise its a moot point and tOSU is going to suffer the consequences APR wise. If he's still going to class, and passing, then good for him and I support him whichever way he decides to go. If he's already stopped going to class then he needs to go pro anyways because he wont be eligible without summer school.

That's correct. I would think that he is either attending school or still shopping for an agent. I'm going to guess the latter.

Ohio State men's basketball star Kosta Koufos enters NBA draft, considers Greece

Tuesday, April 22, 2008 Doug Lesmerises

Plain Dealer Reporter
Columbus- A year ago, Kosta Koufos turned down an offer for nearly $5 million to play professionally in Greece, choosing instead to see through his freshman men's basketball season at Ohio State.
"He did a lot of soul-searching on that," his high school coach at Canton GlenOak, Jack Greynolds Jr., said Monday night. "I think it came down to him wanting to honor his commitment to Ohio State."
Now the call from the pros is too strong. In a news release from Ohio State, Koufos announced he will enter the NBA draft but not retain an agent, thereby keeping his college eligibility.
@StoryAd
But with that offer in Greece still on the table, if Koufos isn't satisfied with his projected draft position, a return to Columbus still may be a long shot.
Koufos should be an NBA first-round pick, probably somewhere in the 15 to 25 range, though 31 other college underclassmen also have declared for the draft.
He averaged 14.4 points and 6.7 rebounds on the year, but 18.2 points while leading Ohio State on a five-game run to the NIT Tournament title.

Koufos throws hat into NBA ring
Freshman hasn't signed with agent, could return to Ohio State
Tuesday, April 22, 2008 3:24 AM
By Bob Baptist

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
The easiest of the decisions Kosta Koufos must make is out of the way. The 7-foot Ohio State freshman is entering his name in the NBA draft, a university athletics department spokesman confirmed last night. But Koufos won't immediately sign with an agent, leaving him the option of returning to the Buckeyes next season.
That tack is the most sensible for Koufos, who is projected as a mid- to late first-round pick in the June 26 draft.
More difficult decisions are ahead: whether to remain in the draft past the June 16 deadline or withdraw his name, and even if he does withdraw, what then? Return to Ohio State, or cash in on an offer he is sure to have -- might already have -- to play professionally in Greece, his mother's homeland?
Which option is Koufos' second -- Greece or Ohio State -- is unknown. He declined comment yesterday, referring questions to his mother, Kathy, in a text message to The Dispatch. Kathy Koufos did not return messages left on her office, home and cell phones.

man i don't get what some of these kids are thinking?? If his family has heavy financial problems i understand and what i say is a mute point. However, after watching him struggle all year how can he declare himself ready for bigger and better things? Watching kk play last year was such a roller coaster ride. One game he was doing great and the shots were falling and the next he was invisible. I think KK would've benefited from 2 full years a college basketball let alone 1 more. He better go to greece if he wants to make an impact playing next year because KK has much to learn about the game.

Also I believe i've said it before but does anyone think KK takes too awkward of shots? He reminds me of when I was 8 years old playing basketball.. I loved to shoot no matter what the situation and would often take these Horse type of shots. throwing the ball at the hoop, trying for ridiculous bank shots, awkward stances during my shot, off angled shots, and running hook shots or reverse lay ups. KK is a good shooter but its just another reason why I think he needs another year.

I will say what others have said to me. The NBA drafts on potential and you don't find many guys who are 7' and can shoot from the outside. If he does get drafted in the first-round by an NBA team does that mean he will play a lot here, I doubt it but it will be getting professional advice on how to improve his game and many many hours to work on his game. In college, supposedly supervised coaching is restricted and it is not in the NBA. Do I think he should come back next year... yes but I guess that's because I'm an Ohio State basketball nut:biggrin2:

The thing about Kosta is that defensively he is going to be a liability in the NBA for a couple years most likely. He's not strong enough to play the 5 man and the 4's in the NBA are too athletic and strong for him. Now, offensively he'll cause the same type mismatches so it may be a wash when his stroke is on. If he ends up on a team with a bonafide center he'll do well playing the 4 spot while getting stronger he can improve his shooting and be a matchup nightmare down the road. Can you imagine Portland drafting KK, say in the second round and pairing him and Oden with Roy on that offense as well? Yikes! That would be a lot of fun to watch.

Apparently Kosta is not going to be around in the second round. Chad Ford of espn.com projects Kosta to go at the end of the lottery (14), and most mock drafts show him as a mid-1st rounder. With that information, KK would be nuts to stick around at tOSU.

I don't think he will be available in the second round. It would be interesting to know where he is officially projected by the NBA. I've googled "2008 Mock NBA Draft" and different sites listed him at 6, 8, 15, 17, 23, & 25. However, these sites were just "one person's opinion" (i. e. nothing official) and these people are just fans (i.e. not affiliated with any NBA team Personnel Director) .

Thats just craziness! No way is he a lottery player at this point. This "drafting on potential" crap is one of the major reasons the NBA sucks now. Its a one-on-one league with little or no fundamental basketball played.

Good Luck Kosta. Thanks for the effort this season. I hope you get to unite with a current or former Buckeye in the league and dominate.

Maybe then the Blazers will pick up Kosta in first round instead of the second. It most likely wont happen but it would be very cool if it did.

It is somewhat crazy how the NBA drafts on potential and they like to project players down the road, production in college is one factor but what KK has that most do not is 7-1 size and a perimeter game to go along with a developing inside game.....with that combination and his performance in the workout circuit......I would expect him to be a late lottery to mid first round pick.....you cannot teach his size and ability to shoot.....

Believe me....I would love to see him back on campus next year.....but this is the reality of college basketball.....it is a revolving door every year for the top programs.

You must not watch a lot of NBA. The league was great this year. Just look at the depth in the West alone. Plus, it can only be a good thing when the Lakers & Celtics have teams in the playoffs. If only the Knickerbockers could get their shit together.

Koufos' offer from Greece

I?ve been trading e-mails with a reporter from a sports newspaper in Greece today to try to verify whether Kosta Koufos indeed has an offer to play in his mother?s homeland next season, and what it might be.
The (Canton) Repository reported last week that the Greek club Olympiakos had sent three emissaries to Canton to try to persuade the 7-foot Ohio State freshman to play for its team next season.

The Greek reporter, from the newspaper Sport Day, said Olympiakos has offered Koufos a reported $5 million for four years. He also said it has been rumored that one of Olympiakos? top competitors, Panathinaikos, could raise that offer to $5.5 million.
How does that compare to what Koufos would receive as a first-round choice in the NBA draft?
