PF/C Kosta Koufos (CSKA Moscow)

In the wake of Kosta Koufos being traded after two inconsequential NBA seasons, and the prospect he will be traded again, Matta was asked how crucial it is for Koufos to fit into the right system if he is to have success in the league.

"You probably need to ask his high school coach that," Matta replied with a smirk.

He's been waiting two years for that comeback.

Jack Greynolds Jr., who coached Koufos at North Canton GlenOak, said after Koufos was taken 23rd in the 2008 NBA draft that Matta was "clueless" for not having taken more advantage of Koufos' talent during Koufos' only season with the Buckeyes.

What's the deal with this guy? I always see alot of activity around his thread but I've never heard about him? Did he play much?

My lack of Big 10 basketball accumen is really starting to show :shake:
He played one year at Ohio State and then declared for the draft. There was a lot of talk that he was not used properly at Ohio State by Matta and his high school coach said some very unpleasant things about Matta (articles about this can be found in the Buckeye basketball recruiting forum under high school basketball. Let's just say that the player and his high school coach along with Matta did not leave on the best of terms and there are quite a few basketball fans who did not particularly care for the way KK acted on the playing court while he was at Ohio State including myself.

When asked if Sebastian Telfair and Kosta Koufos will be part of this team, he said they are -- "For now," he said -- and he said Telfair has looked good in workouts and said he expects Koufos to adapt easily from Jerry Sloan's ways to his offense.

So far, Koufos is looking like much more than salary dump
Acquired in the Al Jefferson deal, he has been impressive so far.

MANKATO - Two months ago, 7-foot center Kosta Koufos was little more than a salary-cap contract exchanged in Al Jefferson's trade to Utah.

So far in training camp, he has been a living, breathing, energetic big man who'll bang and can shoot it with some range.

He also brings the Wolves something they lack: playoff experience.

Hey, he played 30 minutes in nine games with the Jazz last spring.

"I feel like I'm a very good shooter, that I can play inside and out," said Koufos, who left Ohio State after one year and spent two seasons in Utah. "I have two feet in as a Minnesota Timberwolf. Just taking it day by day and working hard."

A lot of NBA players don't reach their full potential until a few years after college (i.e and many of those stayed all 4 years). People forget that this would be Kosta Koufos' senior year at Ohio State. Utah drafts him based on his potential and really didn't give him the necessary time he needed to develop. Give him a couple more years to mature/develop and I think he'll be a very good NBA player. Hey, he may not be the next Larry Bird; however, I do think he will be a very good NBA player in a few more years.

Tonight's scrimmage "sold out," Posted by Jerry Zgoda

UPDATE

Is this good or bad?: Kosta Koufos and Anthony Tolliver are stealing the show.
Koufos is scoring going hard to the hoop, Tolliver is showing a nice jumper, which was pretty much non-existant in the parts of scrimmages I saw leading up to tonight.

* Just from their play tonight, here's how I'd rank the centers: 1. Koufos. 2. Pekovic. 3. Darko.

Rambis likes what he sees in scrimmage

By JERRY ZGODA, Star Tribune
Last update: September 30, 2010 - 12:46 PM

"It was great," Rambis said after the Black team beat the White team 77-67 with Kosta Koufos, Anthony Tolliver and Michael Beasley leading the way. "Guys got tired, but there were an awful lot of good things on both ends of the floor out there. They were focused. They were trying to run the offense."

Some observations:

? Koufos sure looked as if he was trying to impress somebody. Little more than a salary dump when the Utah Jazz included him in the Al Jefferson trade, he was the most lively center in a group that also includes Darko Milicic and Nikola Pekovic.

T-Wolves Intra-Squad Scrimmage Recap
Thursday September 30

Anthony Tolliver/Kosta Koufos: All I can say about these guys is WOW, talk about giving it their all. Like most people, when I found out Kosta was included with the trade, I figured they would be a quick trade or cut away from getting rid of him. However, you can quote me on saying, this guy has talent. He, out of the three true centers playing, got the most rebounds, had the best inside passes, and slammed it home the most times. Now, I understand that this isn?t exactly a real game scenario, but he made me remember his name. And that?s more than Maurice Ager can say.

Postgame Pickings: Koufos shows promise
By Anthony Maggio
FOXSportsNorth.com

Argue all you want about the four-year contract the Minnesota Timberwolves gave Darko Milicic this offseason, but Tuesday night?s 128-124 preseason overtime loss to the Indiana Pacers showed just how much the Wolves need the veteran post presence.

Third-year Pacers center Roy Hibbert continued his impressive preseason by filling up the box score with 27 points, 16 rebounds, six assists and one blocked shot while up against 21-year-old Kosta Koufos and rookie Nikola Pekovic.

But coach Kurt Rambis could only praise Koufos after the second-year center out of Ohio State put in 33 solid minutes.

?I?ve been pleasantly surprised how well he can play in this league,? Rambis said. ?He has great length and size, and one of the things we keep forgetting as a coaching staff is he?s only 21 years old and he has a lot of growing and maturing to do. But you couldn?t ask for a more coachable young man who has an opportunity to be good in this league.?

Koufos, who averaged less than 12 minutes per game in Minnesota?s first six preseason games, started in place of the injured Milicic as both a reward for his strong preseason and to keep Pekovic in his familiar role off the bench. Koufos responded with 10 points on 4-for-7 shooting with six rebounds and a pair of blocks.

The 7-footer, who was acquired along with a pair of first-round draft picks this offseason in exchange for Al Jefferson, is making a push for regular season minutes after coming into training camp as a relative unknown.

?We did not know what we were getting with Kosta,? Rambis admitted prior to Tuesday?s game. ?He didn?t play a whole lot for Utah. We watched some edits on him, but he just got short minutes so we didn?t know what we were getting personality-wise, work-ethic wise, he?s been great. He loves to play, wants to be a good ballplayer.?

?I feel like I can bring a lot to the table,? Koufos said. ?I just make the best of (my opportunity). I?m trying to work as hard as possible to take my game to the next level.?

KOUFOS DEBUTS

After being traded by Utah to Minnesota, former GlenOak star Kosta Koufos is again fighting for playing time. In the Timberwolves? season opener, Koufos played eight minutes and scored 4 points with two rebounds. Koufos played Friday?s game despite suffering from either food poisoning or a stomach flu and again had 4 points and two rebounds, while also blocking two shots in nine minutes.

Finding minutes for the talented 7-footer will be tough. The T?wolves start Darko Milicic, and that leaves Koufos battling with Oleksiy Pecherov and Nikola Pekovic for playing time.

CATCHES RAMBIS? EYE

Koufos got a preseason start for Minnesota as a reward from Head Coach Kurt Rambis. Milicic missed that game.

?He had played well,? Rambis told Minnesota reporters. ?We did not know what we were getting with Kosta. He didn?t play a whole lot for Utah. He?s been great.?
