That's probably why he came off the bench before Simmons. Thad probably told him you were those rugby socks and I know that you will be ready for Indiana:)

It was sort of interesting to note that as soon as Turner picked up his second foul he went right to P.J.'s seat on the bench. I guess it must have been determined before gametime who was the first guard substitute was going to be. I thought it might depend upon how the game was going like if they needed outside shooting Simmons might have been first man in. Just sort of interesting that the decision had already been made.

You're right, it was funny how Turner didn't even wait for the horn or anything...he just marched over to the bench and pulled P.J. out of his chair, but then had to go back on the floor so he could come off after the first freethrow...

This is what I do not get. He is in 2 minutes into the game on the road in a hostile environment (before Simmons) but when they are up 20 against Minnesota, at home, dominating the game he has to wait til the very end to get in the game. Now I know last night there was foul trouble, but Simmons could have come in....just dont understand the substitution methods of Thad.

They've won 8 in a row and are tied for first place in the Big Ten after a 1-3 start. I have no problem with the substitution patterns or anything else at the point in time.

I think you touched on it...the more he shoots, the more that 39% is going down.

Maybe he's improved enough to warrant minutes, but I still have nightmares of him trying to get the ball upcourt against Minnesota last year when facing pressure. It was a trainwreck and it was essentially man on man ball pressure. I really think that was the turning point in making Evan a consistent Point-Forward.

You may not have problems with the substitution patterns or anything else at this point but you might when fans will want them to win 3 games in 3 days at the Big Ten tourney and play deep into the tournament. Those goals might be a little more difficult when you have 4 guys playing 40 mins a game. Just a thought


Also, I am not calling Thad out; just wondering what Hill's playing status is...

I could be wrong, but I think his status is fine. He's just being sat in favor of the best player in college basketball right now.

The other thing Evan gives the Buckeyes when playing PG, is much needed length in the zone defense. P.J. is a good defensive player and brings a lot of intensity, but length really cannot be overstated when we play a zone 98% of the time with essentially 4 guards and 6'8 center. We need all the length we can get, and if P.J. or Jeremie are in the game, it makes rebounding and contesting shots that much harder. At least with Evan playing the PG, you don't have anyone shorter than 6'6 on the court, which helps make up for the fact that we don't have a traditional PF or Center for that matter.

Not to mention Evan is openin up the court for everyone else on offense...that goes without saying. When he isn't in the game, the offense struggles to find any good looks.

The above post by billmac91 cover things very nicely but I would just like to add that when Clark Kellogg was doing color commentary for the Minnesota game the issue about not playing many guys came up and Kellogg's response was that he did not think it was a very big deal because there are quite a few teams who consistently play 5 guys 40 minutes. In addition, he said that cutting back on practice also reduces the fatigue factor when playing with a short bench or no bench:)

Congrats to PJ on senior night! I've always loved his energy and attitude. PJ never got to play as much as I'm sure he would've liked at OSU, but he stuck it out and played his role. Every team needs team players that play their role. Thanks for your dedication and heart PJ.

Good luck to PJ in life after hoops. Although I'm sure we'll see him floating around the stands watching his sister play for a few years.
