Ohio State guard Amedeo Della Valle helps lead Italy to U-20 European title

Some of the best players in college basketball had the opportunity to represent their countries in international duty this summer, with events such as the Under-19 World Championships and World University Games allowing those players to get in some quality playing time against solid competition.

Another competition of note was the Under-20 European Championships in Tallinn, Estonia, which came to a conclusion on Sunday. In the gold medal game Italy defeated Latvia 67-60, and it was an Ohio State Buckeye who led the charge.

Rising sophomore shooting guard Amedeo Della Valle didn?t see much playing time as a freshman last season, playing in 15 of the Buckeyes? 37 games and posting averages of 2.5 points and 1.5 rebounds per contest.

His opportunity to represent his country allowed Della Valle to improve his game against some of Europe?s best young talent, and Sunday?s finale was simply the most recent step in a very productive tournament.

At one point in the fourth quarter Della Valle scored 13 consecutive points, making all three of his three-point attempts, after struggling with his shot for much of the afternoon. Della Valle finished the game with 19 points (17 in the fourth), and for his efforts throughout the event (13.0 ppg, 3.7 rpg) he was named tournament MVP.

So what does this mean for Della Valle in regards to his role with Ohio State this coming season?

That remains to be seen, as head coach Thad Matta returns every key perimeter contributor from last season?s Elite 8 squad (unless you count DeShaun Thomas as a perimeter contributor). There?s also the matter of incoming freshman Kameron Williams adding even more competition to the shooting guard position, with returning starter Lenzelle Smith Jr. leading the way.

But even with those questions, it?s safe to say that Della Valle?s summer playing for Italy won?t hurt as he looks to crack the Ohio State rotation in 2013-14.

From watching some of the games that ADV played, it seems he was most effective when they gave him the ball and let him have room to make a play. That and when he could get going driving to the basket in transition. He would be a good #3 PG option for next year's OSU team. He's got some skill but you've got to give him the ball and give him some room to make a play for him to be in the position where he was most effective. I don't think playing exclusively as a catch and shoot guard (as he did last year at OSU pretty much) is the best utilization of his talents. He didn't average many assists in the tournament, but he would've averaged 2-3 per if his teammates made most of the open shots he created for them. I think with Italy most of the time they had him playing within the flow of their offense, which wasn't suited to his game - when he had the freedom to create his shot is where he was the best (kind of like ET in that regard). Hopefully he will get a chance to show his skills a bit more at OSU next year.

it will be interesting to see who sees more playing time next year between ADV and Russell. I say the former peak as he has a little more experience but I know that DZ feels different. Either way we should be an improved shooting team from the outside come next season.

You mean ADV and Kam Williams, I presume. I think it's going to be hard for ADV to earn PT, I hope everyone proves worthy of a role but the odds are against him. After watching him in that U-20 tournament, I think he would be most effective with the ball in his hands - whether that means he would have to play PG is questionable, but to get the most out of him you need to give him the ball and give him a chance to make a play because that's when he shined. He can be just another guy who is a bench player wishing he played more, or a guy they bring in for 10 minutes a game to utilize his playmaking skills and scoring ability with the ball in his hands. Either is reasonable in my mind.

ADV shot the 3 well in the practice, showed some pretty good touch, though in fairness the defense of both squads wasn't the greatest in the scrimmage. Jon Diebler got a ton of minutes based on being a great catch & shoot 3-point threat. Of course, ADV has stiffer competition for PT than Diebler did, but still it's plausible for ADV to earn a role based on his outside shooting ability.

Amedeo Della Valle found fulfillment being a good teammate last season as a freshman, but now he hopes to have a playing role in his sophomore season.Mike Munden, AP

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Amedeo Della Valle grabbed the outlet pass with nothing separating him from the basket, then he turned his back on all the trailing defenders and took three steps toward the unguarded rim.

As he elevated for what initially looked like a layup attempt, a defender closed in enough for the block. But at the last second, Della Valle turned around and dumped the ball to freshman forward Marc Loving, who was running free, for the easy basket.

But wait – isn’t Della Valle only supposed to be capable of shooting threes?

“That was last year,” interjected Della Valle, who was all smiles after scoring 13 points in No. 10 Ohio State’s 93-63 win over Walsh in an exhibition game in Value City Arena on Sunday evening.

Amedeo will shoot 40% from 3-point range this year. Book it.
I tried to tell you that ADV was going to get some playing time this season and I mean meaningful playing time. He is no longer just the curlyhaired fan favorite but is a very good basketball player and as you mentioned can really shoot the ball. It will be interesting to see how much playing time he does get this season.
