I don't understand the whole kerfuffle: he paid a fill-in caddie more than the price they had agreed upon ahead of time, end of story, as far as I'm concerned. Just a bunch of sports-gossip media taking another opportunity to jump onto a dog-pile.
Disagree. 10% is the standard. He paid the man 0.38%. Its like tipping 50 cents at a restaurant.

10% for winning is standard for a player's regular caddie, who travels with him and has to cover expenses etc. This guy was a last-minute local replacement who negotiated his fee ahead of time. I agree Kooch that this is "a social media issue more than anything."

The bottom line is that Kuchar is a cheapskate asshole. You don't get publicly outed like this by a journeyman on the tour unless there is an underlying issue with the man's character. 0.38% of the winnings as a fee. That's like an employee directly contributing to a company's banner year, and in return getting a Jelly of the Month Club as a Christmas bonus.

I don't know what the caddie's skills were during the course of the week, but the few times that I've taken caddies at high end courses, they knew every undulation of every green, and the best strategies to play from wherever your ball might be. They might not have the same sports psychology knowledge the regular caddie has for his tour player, but the club caddie probably brings other things of value himself. I mean, it was Kuchar's first PGA tour victory in four-and-a-half years. The caddie had to have contributed something.

The two sides have given different accounts regarding the terms of the contract. According to the caddie, if Kuchar were to win, he was to be given an unspecified % as a bonus. If that is the true story, the unspecified bonus was like one-fifth of one percent.
