I'd go with the 4S and not look back. The iPhone 5 will have some upgraded features, sure. Every major update to the iPhone line has had its issues or inadequacies though, which they have then followed up with a nearly trouble-free "S" model. While it's nice to have the latest and greatest, there's something to be said for opting for something that's proven and stable.

The nice thing is, there will be an update to the operating system that will be announced at the same time as the new iPhone. The iPhone 5 will come with the new iOS preloaded, but the update (and most of the expanded features) will also be available to the 4S.

I would not go with an cut-rate iPhone 4 however. While it looks the same as the 4S, it's different (not as good) internally. Siri is not the only thing lacking on the iPhone 4.

This...check out the features each iPhone using iOS6 is compatible with. (obviously the "new" iPhone will be able to use all of the new features)

Which iOS6 features can my iDevice run?

I voted to get the iPhone 5 because I'm on a 4 and I want you to tell me if I should worry about upgrading to the 5.

Seriously though... Apple's fist generation for an iteration has had relatively few bugs. I've been on the 3 and the wife on the 3s... then I upgraded to the 4 and she upgraded to the 4s... I've noticed a dramatic increase in speed between the 3/4 and the 3s/4s models. I'd assume that there will be another jump between the 4s and the 5 that will be worth waiting for.

Also, don't forget... with the 5 there should be new connectors. You're not going to want to buy for the old and then the new again when you finally move up to the 5 or whatever it's called at that point.

Oh, and FTR... I'm typing this on a mac mini server i7 w/ 8 gigs of ram and have another mac mini connected to the home entertainment system. We're only wintel in this house because of work.

I got a 4S last week because Verizon won't cover my Razr (yes that one-I was an Alltel customer and they are switching to one database). My gf has a 4 and likes it. I got mine for $100 and there is also a new case that you can get which holds a battery in the case so it runs off that before your iphone battery--$50). So I voted for the 4S. But I also have an iTouch and several ipods. So the transition was smooth.

Won't the new iPhone be $199 also?

This seems like a pretty fickle decision. You're stuck with it for 2 years, without 4G data. What's the rush? Annoyance?

probably 95% it will be $199 for the new iPhone at 16gb

If your old BB is throwing fits, why not go into ATT and "borrow" a phone for a month?

The new iPhone models really have minimal bugs that need worked out. It's really worth it to wait and get the "new/5/6" especially for LTE.
