Pittsburgh Penguins (Official Thread)

JO,
Please don't tell me you're a Leafs fan!!

Reagarding the videos, I'll say no suspension for Ovie. He was going for the hit then Heyward started bending down. He didn't even leave his skates for the hit. It just looks like one of the odd things that can happen near the boards. Was he even penalized on the play?

The Staal fight was funny. Semin should be suspended for impersonating a figure skater. Way gay.

Spezza. I dunno. I lean toward suspension for any infraction using the stick as a weapon on a spear. By the video, it was clear he used it with intent, even if it was not very hard. So yea, suspension. Did he get suspended?

I can't comment on Peca's because I did not see the actual incident. What did Bettman see that made him drop it from a 10 game to a 3 game, then up to a 5 game?

The Ovie hit wasn't boarding....

in the ohl it is (the heward one) its clearly a blow to the head also. the heward one has to be put in the context of the game. we can both agree that 15-20 years ago the result would have been different. retalliation would have come by way of the gloves coming off not some cheap ass head shot on the boards. granted it happens blah blah but it has become common place, to common in place in hockey today.

NO. NO, NO. but, i have been to plenty of games in toronto.

it meets the definition of suspension with the blow to the head and resulting injury, im fine with no suspension on that, the point was it wouldnt have worked out like that a few years ago.

The Staal fight was funny. Semin should be suspended for impersonating a figure skater. Way gay.

little drummer boy is what comes to my mind. granted give him some credit for doing something, protecting ovie and his goalie.

once again no. i dont necessarily advocate that but we need to look at that stuff, he made a pass with the late slash then reinitiated that stuff as the play was clearly over. once again 15-20 years ago it doesnt end that way, spezza gets his face punched in, or someone else does.

I can't comment on Peca's because I did not see the actual incident. What did Bettman see that made him drop it from a 10 game to a 3 game, then up to a 5 game?
stories change, that is all ill say...

my point goes back to the sid mclean thing, was it bad, eh. but its borderline stuff. how would you feel is larque, the bogeyman, etc off the draw locked up sid and did that to him. sids got 30+lbs on that guy. it doesnt happen pre instigator. the third man in is heat of the moment dirty stuff, eh it happens. i like that sid has gotten more sandpapery.

ill say im not a huge fan of fighting but i understand why it is part of the game. personally i think it should be an extra penalty or something, the current rules lead to more goonery than less. its the less blatant stuff liek this not the old school huge open ice line the guy up type of hits. granted the enforcers ahve now become 6-7 260lbs guys who practice more boxing than with a hockey stick and more spend more time in the film room watching fight tape than discussing f1 positioning.

i guess this revolves around a half hearted rant that wasnt backed up and a combination of many things.

staal signs a 4 year 16m deal.

Penguins sign Staal to four-year extension
thats 21.4 cap hit on the top three centres. toss in the two long term signed d men and maf, thats 34.15m in long term cap. that puts the pens at about 46m against the cap next year with the following coming up this summer

ufa
satan
skyora
fedotenkoo
boucher
gill
scuderi
sabourin

rfa
talbot
kennedy
thomas
goligoski

personally thats a very nice/cheap price for staal, imo.

if the cap shrinks like some say (ive heard discussions as low was 44m likely i think theyll hold it flat) it could be trouble.

Dreger: Penguins hinting Crosby should skip All-Star game
Pittsburgh Penguins doctors have recommended Sidney Crosby not skate for four or five days, which would mean he would miss the NHL All-Star weekend for the second consecutive year.
Penguins general manager Ray Shero says the final decision hasn't been made, adding the Pens will do what is right for the player and what is right for the organization, and that puts Crosby's participation this weekend in Montreal in jeopardy.
Crosby and Shero met after Tuesday's 2-1 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes to discuss Crosby's injury, and Shero says he will speak to Crosby and team doctors again before stepping in with his recommendation before the end of the week.
Crosby was named by the fans as an Eastern Conference starter in Sunday's game and is also one of the featured competitors in the highly touted breakaway challenge in the NHL's skills competition on Saturday at the Bell Centre.
Because it's in Montreal, because he was voted in by the fans and because he was forced to miss last year's All-Star events in Atlanta AS THE RESULT of a high ankle sprain, Crosby's heart is telling him he needs to be there.
...

adding
Pittsburgh has no intention of testing NHL commissioner Gary Bettman's threat to suspend those who choose not show in Montreal for this weekends All-Star festivities.
Penguins captain Sidney Crosby is en route to Montreal and will arrive early this afternoon to fully participate in all off-ice All-Star activities.
The NHL says it will enforce an understanding that all players who decline to show after being named to the All-Star teams must miss at least one game before or one game after the All-Star weekend.
If so, Detroit's Pavel Datsyuk and Nicklas Lidstrom may be forced to sit the Red Wings next game if they don't immediately change their All-Star break plans and report to Montreal

Considering Pittsburgh has about $50 million committed between about 5 players next year, go for it.

This is the last year Pittsburgh is going to have any team depth or any hope of going anywhere.

You're quite a fountain of misinformation, eh. Uh, they have 15 players under contract next season for a total of 45 Mill.

Crosby, Malkin, Gonchar and Fleury are slated to make 27.4 Mill next year. Who is the $23 Million player that I'm missing?

You have half of your cap on a crumbling team to 4 players. I got the numbers wrong, but something is going to change with Pittsburgh.

Diehard fan here... So this is hard for me to say but they are awful right now. The Forward Depth for Pittsburgh is awful for one, and considering the stock pile of defenseman I think you'll see either some big trades coming soon or addressing the situation in the summer.

They have 9 good to great defenseman. Eaton, Gonchar, Whitney, Golgi, Gill, Orpik, Scuderi, Boucher, and Letang.

Who do they have on offense?? Ok, they have Malkin/Crosby... but WHO ELSE? Sykora is a nice player, but other than sykora no one is worth a damn. I orginally thought Satan/Fedetenko were decent pick ups but now i'm just glad those are one year deals.

I for one am in the minority that wants to Trade one of thier supposed "core" players. I prefer both Staal, and Whitney because quite frankly there's better role players out there then those two. Staal has no offensive skill set what so ever right now as a youngster, and maybe he grows into an offensive role? However, right now I would rather trade him and get a good pure goal scorer than to wait 5 years for him to develope.

Whitney? He's a great offensive defenseman... Considering how we have Letang and Golgoliski I would rather trade Whitney and ALSO get a pure goal scorer.

The other supposed "core" players are Crosby, Malkin, and Fluery. To be 100 percent honest I wouldn't mind trading Crosby for the right deal. Like 2 great wingers, draft pick, and compensation. I personally feel Malkin is the key to the team and is tougher on his skates.

I tend to agree though that they have too much tied into too few players. Malkin, Fluery, and Crosby are worth it. The others ARE NOT.

Trade Whitney for the kid from Florida.

Trade Staal for a player like Hejduk

Trade Gill/pick for a player like Geurin

Trade Satan for a tough 3rd/4th liner

Now I'm not saying get those players only but players of THAT skill set.

Bottom line is they sadly enough don't have the scoring to be a contender. Simple though, too many d-man and too few forwards. Trade some defense for some offense.

Hejduk-Crosby-Kennedy
Geurin-Malkin-Sykora
Fedetenko-Staal-Cooke
(Trade)-Talbot-Dupuis

Those are 4 solid lines. Top two lines have some fire power, 3rd line is tough and good two way hockey, 4th line would be a huge energy line.
