</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>ATHENS, Ga. (AP) -- University of Georgia linebacker Derrick White, a senior projected as a starter, has been dismissed from the team by coach Mark Richt following White's arrest Friday.

White was charged with driving under the influence near Union City, Ga., according to a release issued Saturday by Georgia.

<!--startclickprintexclude-->White already was suspended for the first two games of the 2005 season following his involvement in a bar fight in Athens on April 10. Following the incident, White was banned from downtown Athens at night for six months.

Now, following White's second offseason brush with the law, his Georgia career has ended.

"I spoke to Derrick Saturday and have made the decision to dismiss him from the team," Richt said in a statement released by Georgia. "The decision was based not only on the incident which occurred Friday, but also on a past history of behavior that does not represent our program in the proper way."

White, from Creekside High and Union City, started seven games in 2004 and recorded 38 tackles. He recovered a fumble and broke up a pass.

Georgia athletic director Damon Evans said he supports Richt's decision.

"I'm convinced coach Richt has taken the proper course of action in this matter," Evans said. "While we support our student-athletes and work daily for their welfare, it's an indication that we cannot tolerate behavior that is inappropriate and/or detrimental to our teams, athletic association, and university."

Richt indicated he would offer assistance if White transfers to another school to complete his college career.

"I will meet with Derrick in person in the next couple of days and work with him on where he goes from here along with providing any assistance we can in his transition," Richt said.

UConn trio receives special probation

DANIELSON, Conn. (AP) -- Three Connecticut football players, including one from New Jersey, received a special form of probation Monday for their roles in a pellet-gun shooting outside a Willimantic convenience store last month.

Defensive backs Tyvon Branch, 19, of Cicero, N.Y.; Marvin Taylor, 20, of New Brunswick, N.J., and Donta Moore, 19, of Tampa, Fla. were granted accelerated rehabilitation, a program for first-time offenders. Charges against them would be dismissed if they successfully complete two years of probation.

Five players were arrested May 8 after a shot fired from inside their sport utility vehicle shattered the driver's side window of another car at a Willimantic convenience store.
Moore told police the pellet gun went off accidentally while he was trying to fix the gun, which Taylor had found earlier in the day in the garbage, according to court documents.

"I'm not the kind of person this incident made me out to be," Moore told Superior Court Judge Michael Dannehy.

A woman and her son were in the other car, but neither were injured, according to the police report.

The players fled the scene, but were arrested a short time later.

They were each charged with possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle. Moore was also charged with second-degree reckless endangerment, third-degree criminal mischief, third-degree assault, and the unlawful discharge of a firearm.

Last month, prosecutors dropped gun possession charges against 19-year-old defensive end Daniel Davis, of Plainfield, N.J.; and 19-year-old linebacker Daniel Lansanah of Harrisburg, Pa.

Under terms of their probation, Branch, who was driving the sport utility vehicle and Taylor will have to perform 50 hours of community service in Willimantic.

Moore will have to serve 100 hours.

"I believe it was a foolish, reckless accident and not intentional," Dannehy said. "You've got to stop and think about your actions."

"You are under a microscope. I heard about this case on the morning news and it was reported as a drive-by shooting."

All five players were suspended from the football team following the shooting. Davis and Lansanah were reinstated last month.

Moore, who will be a senior next year, indicated in court that he will not be returning to UConn until January.

Mike Enright, UConn's sports information director, said the school was expected to issue a statement Monday.

Two A&M players kicked off team

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) -- Redshirt freshmen Erik Mayes and Jorrie Adams were dismissed Monday from the Texas A&M football team for violating team rules, the school announced.

"It is unfortunate and I am disappointed that it has to reach this point," A&M coach Dennis Franchione said in a statement. "We wish both of these young men well."

The school didn't specify what rules were broken.
Mayes, a 5-foot-9, 177-pound defensive back from Humble, had 69 tackles and one interception last year. He started once at cornerback and was also the Aggies' top punt returner with 20 returns for 122 yards.

Adams, a 6-7, 282-pound defensive lineman from Jasper, had 22 tackles last year in a reserve role.

Flakes suspended after drug charge

URBANA, Ill. (AP) -- University of Illinois football coach Ron Zook has suspended redshirt freshman quarterback Kisan Flakes from the team indefinitely after he was charged with marijuana possession.

Authorities stopped Flakes for a traffic violation in Champaign around 1 a.m. Friday and allegedly discovered marijuana in the vehicle, according to a University of Illinois police report. He pleaded not guilty Friday to a charge of possession of marijuana with intent to deliver.
Zook announced Monday that Flakes was suspended indefinitely until he is able to gather all the facts.

"It's unfortunate," Zook said. "But at this point I don't have all the information so I really can't pass judgment."

An attempt to call Flakes at a phone number listed on the university's Web site went unanswered Tuesday.

Flakes, who earned all-state high school offensive player of the year honors while playing in Lovejoy, Ga., was competing for the starting quarterback position for the Illini during spring football.<!--startclickprintexclude-->

Don't ever become a judge. "charge them both"? ridiculous ; "his room, his drugs, no doubt about it"? who had access to his room?...here's an idea-innocent until proven guilty (we use the principle for a reason. Embrace it...may save you some day)
he wasn't living in a dorm. he was living in an apartment with another player... as i posted, the article did not mention the girl, therefore, i did not know about her... who had access to his room? what, OJ, did the REAL drug dealer break into the apartment and plant the drugs there? umm... how often do you let someone stash their drugs in YOUR room? when was the last time someone 'accidentally' dropped their bag of 136 pills in your couch? please... i understand the whole concept of innocent until proven guilty, but i said 'charge them,' which, in case you are unaware, is NOT the same as 'CONVICT' them...

Vols' McDaniel arraigned on felony

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Tennessee defensive tackle Tony McDaniel, who is accused of hitting a fellow student, was arraigned Wednesday on a felony charge, and another court date was set.

McDaniel was charged with aggravated assault after a fight during a pickup basketball game on campus in January. A grand jury indicted him last month after his lawyer failed to persuade a judge to reduce the count to a misdemeanor.

He has been suspended from the team since the incident.

McDaniel and his attorney, Don Bosch, appeared before Knox County Criminal Court Judge Ray Jenkins for the arraignment, which lasted about two minutes. McDaniel did not say anything and did not enter a plea.

A motion date was scheduled for Aug. 16. No trial date has been set.

Bosch said afterward he has been trying to work out a settlement with the state.

McDaniel, who would be a junior this fall, made his first career start for Tennessee in the Volunteers' 38-7 win over Texas A&M in the Cotton Bowl.

The 6-foot-7, 295-pound McDaniel is accused of hitting Edward Goodrich, a 26-year-old student. Goodrich testified during a hearing in April that his face was broken in four places and doctors had to insert a metal plate to treat his injuries.

Some of the incident was caught on tape by a video camera at the university recreation center. McDaniel could face up to six years in prison if convicted, prosecutors have said.

McDaniel is one of 11 Tennessee players who have been either arrested or cited for crimes ranging from aggravated assault to underage drinking since February 2004. Five have remained at the school, while the other six left because they either graduated, transferred or were kicked off the team.

McDaniel also could face disciplinary action from the university. He is currently enrolled in classes, Bosch said.<!--startclickprintexclude-->

Vols WR Smith, former QB Shaeffer plead guilty

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- A Tennessee receiver and former quarterback pleaded guilty Thursday to charges stemming from a campus fight and will pay restitution but avoid jail time.
Receiver Bret Smith and quarterback Brent Schaeffer were charged with misdemeanor assault over a fight with another student in a campus dorm. Coach Phillip Fulmer suspended them from the team April 11, a day after they were arrested.

Smith and Schaeffer pleaded guilty to offensive touching, a lesser charge.

They were sentenced to six months of judicial diversion. If they meet the terms of the sentence and avoid further legal troubles, they can apply to have the conviction cleared from their records.

Schaeffer agreed to pay up to $700 to the victim, Quantavios Emerson, for medical bills and $700 for missed school work.

Last season, Schaeffer became the first true freshman to start at quarterback in a Southeastern Conference opener since Georgia's John Rauch in 1945. Schaeffer, of Deerfield Beach, Fla., and fellow freshman Erik Ainge were considered co-starters until both were injured.

Schaeffer, who broke his collarbone in October, would have battled with Ainge and senior Rick Clausen to regain the starting job. But Fulmer said he and Schaeffer agreed that the quarterback should leave Tennessee.

Smith, of Warren, Ark., led all receivers last year as a sophomore with five touchdown catches.

Police have said Emerson was arguing with Schaeffer's girlfriend when Schaeffer hit Emerson in the neck. Each then grabbed bats but dropped them before hitting anyone. Next, Schaeffer picked up Emerson from behind and threw him down.

Emerson struck his head on the floor. Smith then hit Emerson while he was on the floor, a police report said. Emerson when to the hospital where he got four staples to close a cut on his head, authorities said.

They are among the 11 Tennessee players who have been either arrested or cited for crimes ranging from aggravated assault to underage drinking since February 2004. Six have remained at the school, while the other five left because they either graduated, transferred or were kicked off the team.

I guess all you have to do is plead guilty and you're back on the team -- it's that easy!

Smith's suspension lifted after guilty plea
June 10, 2005

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Tennessee receiver Bret Smith is back on the team after coach Phillip Fulmer ended his suspension for an on-campus fight in April.

Smith and former Tennessee quarterback Brent Schaeffer were charged with misdemeanor assault stemming from an altercation in a campus dorm.

They pleaded guilty on Thursday to a lesser misdemeanor, offensive touching, in a deal with prosecutors. They were sentenced to six months of judicial diversion and ordered to pay restitution to the victim.

"I remain very disappointed we have had any of these kinds of issues at all but am pleased with the results in court for Bret,'' Fulmer said in a statement released late Thursday. "He will return to our active roster and the suspension is lifted, however he will continue to be disciplined internally for his immature actions and poor representation of our team.''

Schaeffer left Tennessee shortly after his arrest and plans to transfer.

Smith led all receivers last year as a sophomore with five touchdown catches.

The school also said Johnson violated the university's Code of Conduct about "confining another student against their will."

No charges have been filed, according to campus and State College police.

Penn State spokesman Jeff Nelson said he could not release additional information about the incident, which occurred in on-campus housing during the spring semester, because of federal privacy guidelines.

Johnson would be eligible to return next spring if he meets school and team conditions, Nelson said. He had already been suspended since March and missed spring practice while awaiting the ruling.

Reached by phone at Johnson's home in Detroit, a woman who said she was his grandmother said the 21-year-old senior was not available. An e-mail message sent to Johnson seeking comment was not immediately returned.

"We regret that any of our players would put themselves in a situation that might endanger others," coach Joe Paterno said in a statement. "Our players understand that they face team consequences beyond university sanctions and like all students must realize how at risk they are with inappropriate actions."

Johnson started three games last year and had been counted on to be a key contributor on the defensive line this fall.

Booker Stanley

He appealed the decision? Wow that's a new one to me.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Wisconsin running back Booker Stanley will miss the team's first two practices at football training.

The University of Wisconsin had suspended Stanley, the Badgers' top returning rusher, immediately after his arrest on misdemeanor battery charges during a rowdy annual block party near the UW campus in April.

Stanley appealed the suspension to an athletics committee, which ruled Friday that Stanley will sit out practices on Aug. 10-11 and then will be able to rejoin the team.

UW Coach Barry Alvarez will further discipline Stanley "for his actions within the framework of his team," according to a UW statement. The committee said it could re-evaluate its discipline if additional information comes to light.

Stanley, 22, has pleaded not guilty to two counts of battery, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

Four officers were needed to subdue Stanley, who allegedly had pushed down a woman and punched a man repeatedly in the face, according to a criminal complaint.

The senior tailback from Milwaukee ran for 350 yards and two touchdowns last season. He also caught 18 passes for 146 yards and another score.
