IU star Hardy jailed for 2 days on battery count

By Sara Eaton and Steve Warden

The Journal Gazette

Indiana University wide receiver James W. Hardy III appeared in Allen Superior Court Monday on charges he battered his girlfriend and their son.
Hardy, 20, who provided an address on the 700 block of West Gorely in Bloomington, is charged with misdemeanor counts of domestic battery and interference with the reporting of a crime after being arrested Friday. During his hearing Monday, a judge set his bond at $750 per charge for a total of $1,500.
Hardy, a 2004 graduate of Elmhurst High School, was IU’s leading receiver last season with 61 receptions for 893 yards and 10 touchdowns. The 61 catches were the third most for a single season in Indiana history, the 893 yards rank fifth all-time, and the 10 touchdowns are the second-most in one season at IU.
He was named second team all-Big Ten by the media and named a Rivals.com Freshman All-American.
Hardy spent this past weekend in jail. He was released Monday on bond. As a condition set by the judge, Hardy is not allowed to have any contact with the victim.
Contacted by The Journal Gazette on Monday, Hardy had no comment.
The 6-foot-7, 215-pound Hardy became the first IU receiver since Ernie Jones in 1987 to catch at least one touchdown in seven of his first eight games. He also caught two touchdowns against Wisconsin, Illinois and Michigan State.
Indiana football coach Terry Hoeppner could not be reached for comment Monday afternoon. A university spokesman said Hardy’s arrest was under review.
“We are aware of the situation and are still in the process of collecting facts on the matter,” IU spokesman Pete Rhoda said. “If and when the matter is settled, we will take the appropriate actions.”
Hardy also played one season of basketball for the Hoosiers, starting in three of the 23 games in which he played.
Friday, Fort Wayne police responded to 3509 S. Hanna St. about 5:40 p.m. after dispatchers received a 911 call and could hear screaming and profanity before the caller hung up. Dispatchers re-dialed the number, but no one answered. The woman identified as Hardy’s girlfriend in court records eventually called dispatchers back and said police were not needed.
A probable cause affidavit states Hardy struck his girlfriend of seven years and their infant son. Responding officers found Hardy’s girlfriend sitting in the grass across the street from the house crying. Her shirt was torn and she had reddish marks on her neck.
According to police report, the red marks began on the left side of her neck and extended around the back to the right side of her neck. She did not have any marks on the front of her neck.
Initially, she told officers nothing happened and that the marks on her neck were from an altercation with another woman earlier in the week. Officers entered the home to check on the baby, whom Hardy was feeding. Hardy’s shirt was also torn, according to the affidavit.
Officers also found a cordless phone broken into four pieces and unplugged from the electrical outlet inside the home, according to the affidavit.
Hardy gave officers several versions of what happened. At one point he said he and his girlfriend argued verbally and did not have a physical confrontation. He blamed the broken phone on his infant son. Later he told officers his girlfriend, “ ‘got into his face’ and he ‘pushed her away with his hand into her neck and that is where the red marks came from.’ ”
Hardy later told officers he turned the phone off when his girlfriend was trying to make a call because it was on speaker phone mode, but he wasn’t sure whom she was trying to contact, according to the affidavit.
According to a police report, Hardy was cooperative with police but he repeatedly asked not be arrested. During the ongoing conversation, Hardy mentioned to officers his attempts to seek a career in the NFL, and how an arrest would ruin his reputation. His girlfriend also pleaded with police to not arrest him, repeatedly questioning why they didn’t believe her that nothing happened.
The charges are each punishable by up to one year in jail if Hardy is convicted.
He is scheduled to make his next appearance in Allen Superior Court June 5. Fort Wayne attorney Randall Hammond is representing Hardy, according to court records.

What his girlfriend needs to realize is that it's time to leave Hardy. Anyone that size who strikes a mother and an infant will do so again. No matter what she is thinking about an NFL future that will come, this guy will do this again.

I'm with Scooter and Gregorylee on this one, big time.

Alabama linebacker Simpson arrested

Associated Press

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Alabama starting linebacker Juwan Simpson was arrested Saturday by Jefferson County sheriff's deputies on charges of receiving stolen property, possession of marijuana and carrying a pistol without a license.

Simpson, 21, was booked at the Bessemer Jail and later released on $7,000 bond.
Simpson, a senior and Decatur native, has started at linebacker for two years. He was a 2005 Academic All-Southeastern Conference selection who earned his undergraduate degree in financial planning in December.

He is pursuing a second degree in criminal justice, according to UA media relations.

At the end of spring practice April 1, Crimson Tide coaches presented Simpson with the Derrick Thomas Community Award, named after the late ex-Alabama linebacker who was actively involved in charitable works.

After starting every game for the Crimson Tide last fall, Simpson is one of four returning starters on defense for the 2006 team.

Head coach Mike Shula could not be reached for comment.

In recent arrests involving Alabama players, Shula's punishment has included a suspension. Quarterback John Parker Wilson missed a game and worked with the scout team after his DUI arrest Oct. 16. Safety Marcus Carter missed the 2005 season opener against Middle Tennessee after his May 28 arrest for underage possession of alcohol.

Sooners QB Bomar pleads guilty to alcohol charge

<!-- end pagetitle --><!-- begin bylinebox -->Associated Press

<TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="100%" border=0><TBODY><TR><TD style="PADDING-TOP: 10px" vAlign=top><!-- begin leftcol --><!-- template inline -->OKLAHOMA CITY -- Oklahoma quarterback Rhett Bomar pleaded guilty Tuesday to a misdemeanor charge of being a minor in possession of alcohol.
Municipal Judge M. Fred Austin sentenced Bomar, 20, to six months of probation. He'll also be required to pay court costs and an administrative fee.
"We do that routinely with young people, especially 20-year-olds who are caught drinking beer before they are 21," Assistant Municipal Counselor Laura Yates said after a hearing in Oklahoma City Municipal Court.
In seeking the sentence, Yates said she took into consideration that Bomar was a first-time offender with no prior convictions. She said she recommended similar sentences to several people in comparable circumstances last week.
Bomar, who set an Oklahoma freshman record for passing yards last season, was cited by Oklahoma City police March 10 after an undercover police officer spotted him taking beer from friends, pouring it into a white cup and then drinking it at a New Orleans Hornets' basketball game at the Ford Center.
Yates said police officers kept a sample of the liquid in Bomar's cup, and Bomar also admitted that he had been drinking.
Bomar's probation requires him to avoid being arrested again or receiving any traffic tickets.
Prosecutors in Norman dismissed a minor in possession of alcohol charge against Bomar in January due to a lack of evidence. Bomar is also scheduled to be arraigned July 13 in Norman on a misdemeanor citation for hosting a nuisance party.

Bomar, who turns 21 on July 2, threw for 2,018 yards last season and had a touchdown pass in Oklahoma's 17-14 win against No. 6 Oregon in the Holiday Bowl. He was 8-3 as the Sooners' starter.
Oklahoma spokesman Kenny Mossman said any discipline would be handled internally and coach Bob Stoops would not have any comment.

I Guess That's Not What You Call a Conventional Reunion

This looks bad for the Bengals pick AJ Nicholson - he was already on shaky ground, now this. What the hell is a 5th round draft pick doing picking off a former college team-mates stereo?

Bengals pick Nicholson, Rouse charged in alleged theft
<hr noshade="noshade" size="1" width="100%"> By Joe Schad
Special to ESPN.com

Two former Florida State football players have been charged with stealing electronic equipment worth approximately $1,700 from the home of a current player, Tallahassee Police told ESPN on Wednesday. Cincinnati Bengals linebacker A.J. Nicholson and former wide receiver Fred Rouse, who was dismissed by coach Bobby Bowden at the end of last season for detrimental conduct, are charged with burglarizing the Tallahassee home of current Florida State running back Lorenzo Booker on May 20 or 21. Rouse confessed his involvement to authorities on May 28, according to police. Rouse was arrested and charged with three felonies: burglary of a dwelling, grand theft and unrelated possessions of a controlled substance without a prescription, which was ecstasy. Rouse has been released on bond. A warrant is out for the arrest of Nicholson, who faces felony charges of burglary of a dwelling and grand theft and criminal mischief, which is a misdemeanor. "Obviously, Lorenzo's not really happy that his former teammates, Rouse and Nicholson, did this," Tallahassee Police Public Information Officer John Newland said. "This incident occurred May 20 and A.J. was drafted in April. You knew you were leaving. Why would you put yourself through this? It's just really unfortunate." A police source said that among the items investigators found at Booker's home was a wide receivers glove with "1," Rouse's former jersey number, stitched into the inside of it. The glove had been left under a color television that had been thrown onto the floor. Entrance to the home, police said, was made by breaking a rear window. In gaining entry, the suspects appeared to cut themselves as they left blood there and on one of Bookers' roommate's sheets. Police later found drops of blood at the exterior of the home of Nicholson's girlfriend. In a sworn, taped interview on May 28, Rouse said Nicholson entered the home and carried out two portable stereos, a DVD player and a pair of headphones. Rouse also said Nicholson had sustained a substantial cut on a finger. Nicholson, who was accused of a sexual assault in Miami and sent home from the Orange Bowl, was selected by the Bengals in the fifth round. Nicholson, who has pleaded no contest to a DUI arrest and had another incident with Tallahassee police that led to dropped charges of resisting arrest, has not been charged in the sexual assault case. Rouse, one of the nation's top freshman prospects last season, and a native of Tallahassee, had only six catches for 114 yards and one touchdown. Rouse also returned 11 punts for 97 yards and six kickoffs for 107 yards.

Apparently some people will do anything to get out of playing for the Bengals!

You have to wonder how these guys' minds work - if at all.
you have the chance to make a minimum of 250 grand/year and you piss it away to steal somebody's $1700 stereo? Makes you wonder if there wasn't some kind of "urgent" need for quick cash for these guys......

I wonder if AJ's burglary was also an inside job, so to speak?

Lorenzo Booker, the FSU RB whose stuff they stole, was interviewed on the local (Tallahassee) radio show. He says Nicholson is a former roommate of his and that there is significant bad blood between them. This is apparently about an over-developed sense of vengence for some perceived wrong.

The locals have always had explanations when this guy has gotten in trouble. I'm sorry, but if this is what passes for judgement and impulse-control; then all of his past indiscretions should be reevaluated.
