2001-2010 Draft Classes

I'm just refreshing these rankings with the 2010 draft class (and dropping the 2000 draft class) for anyone that's interested. Just a quick reminder...

I used the following formula to account for total players drafted while giving additional weight to being drafted in a higher round:

1st round pick is worth 7 pts.
2nd round pick is worth 6 pts.
...
7th round pick is worth 1 pt.

The numbers in the tables are the average "draft points" a team puts out per year.

All Positions (OSU #3)

........Team...........Draft Points
..........................(10 years)..(5 years)
1.......Miami (Fla.)......30.9........21.8
2.......USC................29.9........42.4
3.......OSU................28.8........28.0
4.......Georgia............24.7.......18.6
5.......Florida St.........23.9.......19.0
6.......Florida.............23.8.......23.6
7.......Texas..............22.5.......27.4
8.......Oklahoma.........21.7.......22.8
9.......Tennessee........21.1.......20.2
10......LSU................20.6.......24.6
11......Michigan..........18.5.......16.6
12......Penn St...........17.5.......20.4
13......Virginia Tech....16.6.......17.8
14......Notre Dame......16.4.......15.4
15......Wisky..............16.1.......12.8
16......Iowa...............15.5.......15.4
17......Alabama..........15.1.......21.0
18......Nebraska.........15.0.......12.2
19......Auburn............14.6.......15.0
20......Oregon............13.6.......15.0

For 2001-2010, 5 B10 teams, 6 SEC, 3 B12, 3 ACC, 2 P10, 0 BE. Looking at the last column, you can see how the most recent 5 years compares. With 5 years the only teams that drop out of the top 20 are Wisky and Nebraska and they are replaced by California and Clemson.

QB (OSU still tied for #33)

........Team...........Draft Points
1.......USC.................2.5
2.......Georgia............1.9
........Oregon.............1.9
4.......Florida.............1.8
5.......Texas..............1.7
6.......LSU.................1.5
.........Louisville..........1.5
7.......California..........1.4
.........Tulane.............1.4
10......Notre Dame......1.3

33.....OSU.................0.6

Again, this is a pretty fluky position. OSU has had the two 5th rounders in the last decade in Krenzel and Smith. Barkley will have to be a 1st rounder after his junior season (2012) for USC to keep up the one first rounder every third year pace. 2003 Palmer, 2006 Leinart, 2009 Sanchez.

OL (OSU still #14)

........Team...........Draft Points
1.......USC.................4.4
2.......Iowa................4.2
.........Boston College...4.2
4.......Mississippi.........3.9
5.......Oklahoma..........3.8
6.......Michigan...........3.7
7.......Notre Dame.......3.6
8.......Arizona St.........3.5
.........Miami (Fla.).......3.5
10.....Texas...............3.4
........Alabama............3.4

14.....OSU..................2.8

Iowa made a push to #2 thanks to Bulaga (1st) and Calloway (7th). Hopefully, for Pryor and Co.'s sake, OSU will be moving up over the next few years. Michigan will plummet once 2001 moves off this rolling 10-year time frame. They had the most "draft points" in the last 11 years in that class with 20 (Backus 1st, Hutchinson 1st, Williams 2nd).

RB (OSU tied for #5, was tied for #2)

........Team...........Draft Points
1.......Auburn................3.5
2.......Miami (Fla.)..........2.3
.........USC...................2.3
4.......California.............2.2
5.......Florida St.............2.0
.........LSU....................2.0
.........OSU...................2.0
.........Penn State..........2.0
.........Tennessee...........2.0
10......Arkansas.............1.9
.........Wisky.................1.9

Auburn extended their lead here with Tate going in the 2nd. Wiley (5th in 2000) dropped out, moving OSU down slightly. Oddly enough, 15 of Arkansas' 19 points came from one draft class but still got them in the top 10

WR (OSU #2, was #3)

........Team...........Draft Points
1.......LSU...................4.9
2.......OSU..................4.6
3.......Florida...............4.4
4.......Florida St...........3.5
.........Miami (Fla.)........3.5
.........Oklahoma...........3.5
.........USC..................3.5
8.......Michigan............3.2
9.......Tennessee..........2.2
........Texas A&M..........2.2
........Virginia Tech........2.2
........Wisky.................2.2

OSU moved up due to Florida and Florida St. both having huge classes from 2000 (12 pts and 17 pts) fall out of the 10-year period. Not much movement otherwise. OSU only had 2 pts. from 2001-2003, so they are primed to move up in the next few years.

DL (OSU still #10)

........Team...........Draft Points
1.......Texas...............6.7
2.......Georgia.............6.2
3.......Florida..............5.9
4.......Miami (Fla.).......5.8
5.......USC..................5.5
6.......LSU..................5.2
7.......Tennessee.........5.1
8.......Penn St.............4.6
.........Florida St..........4.6
10......OSU.................4.4

Texas made a big push with 12 "draft points" to take the #1 spot. They've had 41 "draft points" in the last four years, the best four year stretch of any team since at least 2000. There's a fairly big gap between the top 10 and the rest -- OSU having a comfortable lead on #11 Clemson at 3.4. It'll be interesting in the upcoming draft classes if OSU can keep pace with the early 2000's draft classes that will be dropping off (2001 - 9 pts, 2003 - 5 pts, 2004 - 17 pts).

LB (OSU #3, was #1)

........Team...........Draft Points
1.......USC..................5.5
2.......Florida St...........5.5
3.......OSU..................5.2
4.......Miami (Fla.)........5.1
5.......Oklahoma...........4.6
6.......Tennessee..........3.8
7.......Georgia..............3.7
8.......Purdue...............3.6
9.......Nebraska............3.3
10.....Michigan.............2.9

OSU dropped slightly as Diggs (2000 4th round) dropped off. There was some shuffling in the top 10 but there are no newcomers to this list.

DB (OSU tied for #1, was outright #1)

........Team...........Draft Points
1.......Miami (Fla.).........6.8
.........Ohio State..........6.8
3.......Florida St............5.2
.........Texas................5.2
5.......Georgia...............4.9
.........Virginia Tech.......4.9
7.......Florida................4.7
8.......Oklahoma............4.3
9.......South Carolina......4.2
10......USC...................3.9

Berry (4th round) and Plummer (1st round) drop off for OSU but they are still tied for #1. 2000-2006 had an amazing run of buckeye DBs being drafted, averaging almost 10 points per year. It will be difficult to keep up with that in the upcoming years.

I'm confused. Where's State Penn?

Thanks for updating this, BigJim. This is an interesting look at the draft data.
