Potential Staff Changes Discussion (Part 4)

Probably won't hear anything until mid to late next week at the earliest. AFCA Convention is held Jan 7-10 and anything will likely wait until after that. Also appears Day is looking to the NFL so that will have to wait until whoever he is looking at is done with the season/playoff run. Latest...

I like Joe Brady as the OC. I don't know if he wants to go back to college ball. After he was fired by Carolina he took the Bills QB coaching position. I would think that he could have gotten an offensive coordinator in college if he wanted. I think he stays in the NFL.

I think the candidate comes from this group. Collin Klein would have been an interesting package deal with Howard but he has moved on to Texas A&M. I would like them to go after Garrett Riley and give him full control which I don't think he had last year.

Interesting approach to firing a friend (Frye) by hiring a new OC and let it all be his decision.

“Hey man, don’t blame me, it was his call.”

Is it chicken shit? Not really if you need a change in philosophy by hiring a play calling OC anyway. I believe they should have a say on staff changes on offense. It’s just convenient for Day.

I found this quote by Will Howard interesting and the direction of the offense and the possible offensive coordinator role. If Day brings in a new coordinator to call plays, it will be the pro concept that Ohio State is already running. The three possibilities is 1) he brings in an offensive coordinator who is already running the pro concept offense similar to Ohio State and lets him run with it or 2) he brings in a coordinator who is running a different offense and force him to run the Ohio State offense. The third would be unthinkable where he doesn't make any changes to the signal caller and attributes the offensive woes in the Michigan game and Cotton Bowl in quarterback play and a change in the QB will fix everything.

I view it as more of a negotiation tactic to convince someone to come.

“Yes, you can bring in your own assistant coaches, if you want (other than Hartline, who you have to mentor).”

And the Frye rumor/speculation being specifically linked to one of the OCs they’re talking with, rather than something Day is pushing for.

Ultimately Day has to be responsible for the performance of the team. One cannot sidestep accountability because "the other guy hired him." THAT would be chickenshit, and no AD worth his/her salt would be buying that. Maybe we'd get a DL coach that highly rated players would want to play for, dunno. Surprised that Tony Alford isn't getting a 'pass' as he's performed pretty well, although I question his not playing RBs that should be on the field. Believe Frye was the UCLA's recommendation (who goes way back with Day). Go Bucks!

I'm a little surprised but as more info came out about possible changes, I figured this was coming. Couldn't land the recruits. Tim Walton being an absolute stud as a coach and recruiter also just highlighted Eliano's weaknesses.

So with that and Fleming (please god), looks like James Laurinaitis will be the LB coach either way. Now the question is whether or not the other spot goes to a successor for Larry Johnson or if Knowles brings in a new safety coach (presumably Matt Guerreri, who was not retained at Indiana and is basically Knowles' most favored understudy)

I hope that's it but dint count on it as of now. Rumor of Day bringing in a OC would take that spot and if it's an NFL guy he probably brings another guy with him which would be in front of JL. Now if Day is smart he gives JL the ST job immediately where he adjusts with LB and can hit the road recruiting. It doesn't have to get completely dismantled for James to get full time

JL aint gonna be a coach this year unless there's some master plan that blows up in their face.... I think people need to adjust... Day is coaching for his job.... I'd be shocked if anyone brought in was fresh and a first time assistant

edit: Can someone explain the greatness of JL as an assistant given this will only be his 3rd year of college coaching... other than he's a buckeye legend? I'm really just curious because everyone seems to be losing their minds that he's not on the staff it feels like everyone seeing "former buckeye great and NFL player so he must be the next Hartline"
