Post-Game Post Mortem - Penn State

Horrible, horrible offensive game. We finally get a solid, talented group of guys, and the offensive coaches can't figure out how to get them the ball. Well, here's one way- don't let Troy Smith get it first. How many times is Tressel going to let Smith fumble, overthrow open receivers, or pull down early & run before he figures out that the kid isn't smart or mature enough to handle it. Zwick gets shit for being a "big, slow white guy" who can't scramble, but I'll take his accuracy and growing maturity any day of the week over Smith's costly haphazard play.

Oh man I can feel the love in the room. PREACH IT BROTHER!

My questions...

1 - How many times does TS get to drop the snap from the shotgun position? :(

2 - Is Ted Ginn playing "scared"? YES

3 - Why didn't Gonzo see the ball at all tonight? Good FUCKING question

4 - Are TS and TGII "trying to do too much"? Are they trying the score a TD everytime they touch the ball? TS I don't think so, I think that is part of what makes TS TS... hence his scrambles... TGII see above?

5 - Why did we look so good running the ball on the last drive of the first half, and so inconsistent for the rest of the game? play calling???

6 - Malcolm Jenkins was clearly picked on in the first half - what were the adjustments (positive) in the second half to compensate? seemed like our d was great all around... 10 points in a game is AWESOME (can't count the TD off of the INT

7 - Was it playcalling or execution? has to be both, but....

:( :( This game sucked

Ours is a great team. Just not a NC team.

Lost to texas, who I think will ultimately win the NC.

Lost to PSU who looked tonight like maybe the only team in the country that could beat Texas.

I live with "Scarlet Colored Glasses" on my face and am the biggest homer in the world, but I'm not dumb enough to think that ours is a crew with wasted talent, poor coaching, poor play calling, or any other excuse you want to use.

We got beat by a better football team tonight, plain and simple. When push came to shove in the 2nd half, our "D" rose to the occasion and yielded only a FG. Their "D" yielded nothing. Congrats to Jo-PA and PSU. YOU are indeed back in a big way.

That is why I read every one of your posts Dubs.

Are you absolutely serious? With a QB tonite we would have won 31-10.

This comment isn't specific to you, DE, but I heard the very similar comments after the Texas game ... about Justin Zwick!

Yes, you're right. It was good of Tressel to choose a guy and stick with him- you can't expect to develop a solid QB if you're constantly changing them in and out. But I think he chose the wrong guy to stick with. I don't think JZ was given enough of a chance.

The defense deserves better. I've always been a defense-first kind of guy and I always will be, but that doesn't mean that the offense doesn't have to show up.

The defense held PSU to under 200 total yards and 10 points. PSU's defense held us to only 10 points after giving up 24 to lowly Cincy, and 29 to N'Western. I can understand N'Western having a better offense than us, but something's not right.

No excuse to have such an inconsistent offense

Troy Smith nearly threw two ints in the Texas game. Zwick had about 4 balls dropped on him. Im not seeing why Zwick gets a whole lot of blame and Smith just doesn't get as much critism. Its about time we realized that Zwick is in fact the better QUARTERBACK. Hes had his rough times for sure, but we need to let a pocket passer come in and grow.

I disagree. We beat ourselves tonight. PSU is good, but I'm not convinced they are better than us.
Correction...OSU has the better athletes. Its glaringly obvious the team as a whole is a hodgepodge group of athletes who cant work together like the '02 team

no one is acknowledging that PSU defense played great and had the homefield...it cant always be about excuses or bad play...PSU is a very good team

People are, it is just being drowned out by all the griping going on. I'll say again like I said in another thread, they turned our formula against us. Crowd was really into it, the defense played great and their offense did not lose the game.

1) Do you still think that Troy Smith is clearly the best QB and the man to lead this team?
He's the best of the 2 that we have seen.

2) Do you still think that Antonio Pittman is a great running back?
He's good. He'll get 1000 yards this year.

3) Do you still think that the Buckeyes have the best group of wide receivers in college football?
Ginn is questionable as a receiver.
Not sure why Gonzo didn't get the ball tonight.

4) Do you still think that this team has more talent than the 2002 squad (which was ranked the #16 team of all time by Billingsley's)?
2002 defense was incredible, especially the line.
#13 could run the ball when he wasn't sidelined.
8 home games can't be beat.
No real conclusion, just these observations.

5) Do you still think that this is a national championship caliber team?
That seems obvious by their ranking Sunday.

Based on what?

Listen, I'm not real big into QB controversies and the coaches will obviously play the kid they are more comfortable with. I do think the slack Troy Smith gets despite pretty poor performances versus the flack Zwick got when he played is unfair. I guess a great performance against scUM goes a long way. I just wonder how long.

Clearly Penn State outplayed the Buckeyes tonight and deserved to win. Kudos to them. I'm still not ready to say they're back but they look to be on their way.
