QB CJ Stroud (All B1G, 2022 B1G QB of the Year, All-American, NFL OROY, Houston Texans)

Our coaches took 1 year of Haskins over 2 years of Burrow..just saying.
Can we please not go back to this argument. I know i brought it up but … if you want to compare compare the 2018 season of Haskins and Burrow and tell me which one you would take.. 2019 was an absolute marriage of a QB with an OC and a WHOLE lot of talent on the offensive side of the ball.. the chances that happened in 2019 at Ohio State are at best 50/50

Ok Andy Dalton starts today . I am not a coach I’d start Fields I’m just a Bears Fan. Coaches make mistakes.

I don't believe that was exactly the decision; however, that's how it did pan out. The coaches' decision was that Haskins was the best choice of their QBs to start in 2018 (period) without regard to what any of the backups would do. Besides Haskins was a rsSoph and the coaches probably never even considered he would go pro after the 2018 season, etc.

Why did Joe Burrow transfer from Ohio State?

Burrow, a four-star pro-style quarterback in the class of 2015 and Mr. Football in the state of Ohio (2014), transferred from Ohio State after failing to secure the starting position in any of his three seasons there.

He redshirted as a freshman in 2015, the year Cardale Jones and J.T. Barrett split time at quarterback. Barrett took over the starting role when Burrow was a redshirt-freshman in 2016, and didn't relinquish it in 2017. By that time, freshman Dwayne Haskins had moved ahead of Burrow on the depth chart, completing 40 of 57 passes for four touchdowns and one interception.

Once Barrett graduated from Ohio State after the 2017 season, the Buckeyes had a three-man race for quarterback among Burrow, Haskins and Tate Martell. Burrow, despite completing 15 of 22 passes for 238 yards and two touchdowns — including one final pass in a Buckeyes uniform for a 42-yard score — was unable to secure the starting spot. That job went to Haskins, who would go on to complete 373 of 533 passes (70 percent) for 4,831 yards, 50 touchdowns and only eight interceptions.

But Burrow, who'd already graduated in just three years and who'd told reporters that "I came here to play," decided he would graduate transfer from Columbus and spend his final two years of eligibility elsewhere.

Not sure what you're looking for with this question. Because if McCord lights it up and the offense looks competent and efficient, then we may have a new starter. This elite CFB, this isn't HS or lower level FBS. Feelings have to be taken out. Strouds here to win games, and make the offense run the best that can, if he can't do that, then find someone who can. It's funny how so many people calling out other players for underperforming, but won't hold the most important position accountable. I get it, he's 19 and in his first action, but the best need to play, regardless if that's Stroud or anyone else.
What I'm saying is I'm sure thats what CJ would be thinking... obviously I don't care who starts and plays either way. But I'm sure CJ is gutting it out partially because he's afraid of being replaced.

Football often is about timing and luck, and right now those things are not in Ohio State's favor. Stroud has not started a game strongly yet. Perhaps it is due to an injury, but his performance is degrading, not improving. Day probably has one opportunity to rest him and there is a nontrivial probability that if Stroud is injured and not rested, things could get much worse very quickly. This is not rocket science.

Eh a one game sample is probably not enough to call it degrading he had his best day against Oregon he had his worst against Tulsa

I am OK with a few freshman mistakes. But if he won't pull a read option where he could jog and move the sticks he should NOT be OSUs starting QB. Those read options can create such easy yards especially with teams focusing on Henderson from here on out.

If he isn't healthy enough for 10 carries a game he shouldn't be in there.

I know it's not fair to compare him to Feilds, but with Fields at the helm we easily put up 50 in each game so far.

I think the entire offense is going through a reality check. Maybe getting a little high on their own supply. The offense has spent a lot of time going against the Ohio State defense in practice. Now, I’m not sure if you’ve seen the last few games, but it appears that completing passes to wide open pass catchers might not be that huge challenge they thought it was.

I’m sure CJ has looked straight up unbeatable in practice, especially with these receivers and the offensive staff. Olave didn’t have huge concerns - he came back to improve his draft stock and likely thought Stroud could help. The reality of the experience could end up being quite different than practice, which I think they are finding out.

I think Stroud still needs to show he’s more than a 7 on 7 superstar. He’s still playing disconnected, low risk football. Using his legs might help him settle down; he showed last year he can move. I think he has the tools. Coach Day obviously does. I assume his receivers do.

Unfortunately (for him), this isn’t 2003, 2004, or 2014 - there are equally talented and equally unknown QBs that want the opportunity. If he’s hurt, then he shouldn’t be playing. If he’s not hurt, he’s got to improve. A game against a 48+ point MAC underdog at home at night is a perfect situation to rebound and address some concerns…

Shouldn't some of those concerns have been alleviated from an average AAC opponent?

I think I know what doesn't feel right for me in regards to Stroud. In the Gopher game he talked about being really down at the half and needing to be picked up. I noticed he was sulking on the bench bad after his INT and again had to be propped up by his WRs. I don't know if we've seen that from a QB? I can't think of another time where one of our QBs had to be constantly picked up?

I mean I don't blame him but...

It definitely was worse on Saturday, but I'm really interested in what Tulsa did defensively and to hear from smarter people what they did and if it make sense that Stroud would struggle more. He missed throws, but they also drop 8 consistently and I'm wondering if this was closer to the NW game last year when he got impatient and out of sync due to easier throws not always being there.

Everything I've read and heard says that he can't pull the ball in those situations. They aren't actual reads. I think they need to be, at least a few, and he needs to take some easy yards if he can on scrambles.

He's 19. Not surprised, and he's obviously feeling pressure and frustrated with misses he's had. I don't think it's that abnormal for a young QB. He just needs to outgrow it.

CJ admitted that he's not 100%. I believe that Day would love to sit CJ (or maybe only play him one quarter) against Akron. But...What happens if McCord starts and looks much better running the offense? Doesn't sail passes. Throws on time. Pulls the ball on read options and keeps the defense honest. Offense looks great. Sure it's against Akron. But everyone in Columbus and all of Buckeye Nation will get really vocal. What would Day do? I'm sure he wants CJ to leave no doubt that he made the right choice. But I'm not sure he's done that.
