QB J.T. Barrett (B1G FOY, All American, Silver Football Award, 3x B1G QBOY, National Champion)

I see a difference between being on the sideline with a jersey on rather than being in the pressbox.

By putting him in the booth he ensured JT was surrounded by coaches and supervision, and kept it buisness only all game long. Being on the sideline would allow him to joke around with friends, and treat it as a fun time celebrating (the same stuff he would be permitted to do by not being at the game).

I think all suspended players should be mandated to attend the game and sit upstairs. At least you know they aren't out partying and drinking during the game (especially if it's a weak sauce OOC oppponent). This teaches them that yes you got in trouble, but you are still going to go to work, but no you arent going to be able to joke with friends - you are going to be productive and learn while sitting out.

So... we shouldn't hand them over the Spanish Inquisition for the duration of the game ?

Prepare to be upset when Urban doesn't follow your mandate. I think you're rationalizing.

Why suspend him at all? Or why not just suspend him for a half? Or just the first series? He's a good kid. He learned his lesson. Just make him run a bunch of gassers 'til he pukes at practice then let him play.

They kept him off the field but they still let him "play" in the sense that they let him help contribute. And speaking to the team at halftime when he's "suspended?" What message does that send.

Whatever happened to "Go to your room and think about what you've done?" Sitting at home and watching the game on tv by yourself sends a very strong message. Just ask Troy Smith. Or was Tressel wrong not to let him go along with the team to San Antonio, or to attend the opener against Miami?

I guess it's being military that makes me favor additional duties as punishment, rather than taking stuff away. If someone gets in trouble, I'm not going to send my troop home and let him out of work to go goof off. He/she will continue her shift, receive paperwork, anf also receive additonal taskings at the squadron where we have eyes on him/her (depending upon the severity of the problem).

Saying "go hang out with friends while your team goes to work" is easy. Being forced to watch the excitement is hard.

This is a good point... maybe that's why I had no reaction to seeing him up there too.
We didn't do paperwork unless it was severe or recurring... but yea... have fun cleaning/rearranging the warehouse, going on a 6mile Saturday run, wearing service uniforms to work, pushing until your supervisor gets tired of watching, etc.
Only civilians can think of stuff like sending people home from school/work as a harsh punishment. "Oh that's how I get a day off around here...."

I would say that JT being allowed to participate in game day activities, just not on the field, is in military terms akin to letting a rulebreaker accompany his fellow soldiers off base for R&R, just stipulating that he had to be the designated driver. I'm suggesting that he should be confined to quarters.

I'm only basing my expectations of what should happen to a suspended player on my lifetime of watching previous coaches handle suspensions. It's not that one way is inherently better, I suppose. It's just that JT is the first suspended OSU player I've ever seen treated that way. Not exactly a uniform code, if you will.

This is a thing that I did.

JT having to watch his team play first hand, having to see 107k screaming fans, seeing his team struggle as a direct result of his error is more painful than kicking back on a couch somewhere. The proverbial rubbing his nose in it type of punishment.

I've had to watch my team some in HS and plenty in college ball due to injury and it's just miserable to see the action knowing you could be out there.

Confined to quarters is only a PMO (aka MPs) thing.
If you think a game is like R&R... well... never going to agree on that.

Play this board game called "game of things". One question is "Things you don't share". Everyone writes an answer and you guess who says what. 5 of 7 people including myself wrote "feelings". JT Barrett is starting the next game. Fact. Noone cares how you feel about it. Start talking football or discuss a circle jerk argument elswhere. Noone is convincing anyone of one's opinion of the matter.

From what I know about JT, I'm sure that yucking it up on the sidelines was all he had on his mind. :roll1:

What does Peter Noone have to do with anything?

Meh - it's a message board. And I don't live in China or North Korea or anywhere else that suppresses opinions - useless or otherwise.
'Merica!!! Home of stupid opinions and unsolicited advice!!!
