QB Kirk Herbstreit (Frosted Quips)

Seems to me that there are two kinds of Buckeye fans that have a problem with Herbstreit.

The first seem to expect him to be an Ohio State homer who comments on everything from a Buckeye viewpoint. That's how they live their lives. He played at Ohio State. That's how they expect him to live his life.

The second resent what they perceive to be his attempts to show that he is not biased toward Ohio State. They don't expect him to be a homer but they also don't expect him to be singing Hail to the Sphincters.

The first kind of fan who resents Herbstreit has a naive view of what his role requires him to do. If he did what they want him to do, he wouldn't be in his job very long. Then, those same fans would bemoan the fact that "an Ohio State guy" isn't holding down the job.

The second kind of fan who resents Herbstreit, I think, stands on much firmer ground because he does seem to go over the limit sometimes. At least I think he does, anyway.

That said, he seems to be very successful at what he does and fans don't really know diddle-squat about the pressures that he is reacting to or the requirements that his management is placing on him. They'd also be pretty shocked if they knew how much money he was making.

So, ultimately, both kinds of resentment have roots that may not be very realistic.

As for moving, I think that it certainly has a lot to do with him wanting to spend time with his family. Also, it can't be very pleasant for his kids when they have to take crap from the first kind of fan on behalf of Dad all the time. People in Columbus can be incredibly silly in that respect.

I sure wouldn't want to live in Bristol. But I can understand how someone also might feel that it is nearer the ocean, the East Coast prestige private schools, New York and the other big metros, and other attractions.

Whatever, leaving Columbus doesn't mean turning your back on it or Ohio State. It just means going where life leads you. I'm sitting at the other end of the world and the centerpiece of my office is a five foot wide picture of the Shoe.

You can leave home without leaving it behind. My guess is that is what Herbsteit is doing.

Herbstreit Weighs In On 2008 Recruiting Class, Terrelle Pryor........Herbie talks about the incoming class and keeping them in perspective until they reach the field.....comments on TP and is leery of another MOC situation.....states and I quote....the USC game can save the program.....Herbie believes if tOSU does not defeat USC and wins the rest of their games, they will not reach the title game.

Note: Not sure I agree with the USC game "saving the program"

I agree with his assessment though. Lose to USC and we won't get back into the NC game. Too much resentment of being there twice and losing. We'll get hammered with the "weak Big Ten" and "let's give someone else a chance" nonsense. I think that we may even have difficulty if we win them all and USC loses to someone else.

It all depends on whether the Big Ten pull up their socks this year and punch their weight. They have to really look good in OOC games.

So, if we lose at USC by a FG or less, our program is dead? I try not to rag on Herbie (and in fact was going to make a pro-Herbie post here) but that statement was a little over-dramatic.

Still, folks need to lay off him for a while. Some on this board think that he should be singing, "Drive, drive on down the field..." while he's banging his wife.

I can't speak for Mrs. Herbstreit, but my wife said that's what he sings.

I don't think our program is dead but I think our chances of playing in the NC game would then be very, very remote for the reasons I noted, Mili. All this anti-Ohio State propaganda (e.g., Ohio State gets rolled by an SEC team, again) has to affect voters in the polls.

On the other hand, if we lose a heartbreaker on a last second field goal and USC goes on to beat everyone else they play by three touchdowns. Then, I guess our chances are a bit better, but I think still remote.

By the way, doesn't everyone sing OSU fight songs in bed?
