Ron Macejowski was drafted into the NFL.

I agree it would be unfortunate, but sometimes you gotta take one for the team.

Imagine what it was like before the Scholarship limits when top schools would simply stock pile talent to keep other teams from getting them. Some very fine players rode the pine for four years and in the days before combines it really hurt their chances at the next level.

There are no more guarantees that he would beat out the folks at those positions either.

Quite frankly if Smith spends his entire career as a backup, he will have contributed more to the program than most of the players at the aforementioned alternate positions.

You are missing the point entirely.... A few years ago, we had a mediocre QB who could have been an All Big Ten safety; said player was a decent QB, and made a contribution to the program from that position, but he would have been a much more productive and valuable player as a safety. How valuable is Smith standing on the sidelines wearing a baseball cap and carrying a clip board? Now, how valuable is he on the field contributing as a WR, RB, or DB? No comparison....

I think you can argue that point on the issue of marginal differences. Who would have played QB instead of Bels and what safety would he have replaced?

By the same token, who is Smith going to beat out at WR or DB? How much better would that make the team?

No I understand your point I just disagree with it

Hmm, Bellisari at QB and Doss & Nickey at S OR Moherman at QB & Bellisari fighting for time behind Doss & Nickey.

It's a no brainer alright, just not in the way you implied.

BTW you might want to take a look at the senior production of both Bellisari & Krezel the next time "mediocre" is used as a comparison.

What you should be asking is "How valuable is he as a solid backup QB over a backup WR, DB or RB?"

From seen first hand how instrumental a quality backup QB can be to a team not only in case the starter goes down, but every single day in practice helping to ensure that not only is the offence is prepared for the upcoming opponent...but the defence is as well. Yeah I think Troy Smith contributions will be pretty damn important even if he does not win the starting job.

OK, you win; Troy Smith as third-string QB is a brilliant coaching decision, and I'm sure that Coach T will take your advice.

You're also correct that Bellisari had a much more productive senior year than Krenzel; I'm mean, really, CK went only 11-2 and won the Fiesta Bowl, after going only 14-0 the year before and leading the Bucks to their first NC in 34 years. Oh, and by the way, CK beat Michigan while senior-leader Bellisari was in street clothes for an off-the-field indiscretion. No comparison.

Sorry that I doubted you.

Im goona agree LJB here, tho I dont think Smith will play other positions this year, I think he will his Junior and Senior seasons. After this year we lose 2 senior RBs, Bam and possibly Holmes. Smith will have 3 years of working with the offense, which give him an advantage over some of the younger guys just coming in. I tend to think Smith MIGHT get passed up on the depth chart, which is why I think he will move.

Smith as # 2 QB

I think Smith will remain at QB. First, OSU wants to redshirt Boeckman making Smith at least the #2 QB. Second, OSU must give both QBs playing time early in the year. If #1 goes down in the first quarter against Purdue, you don't want #2 taking his first snaps in that situation. This scenario does not preclude playing both Zwick and Smith at the same time. I expect to see this early in the B10 sked to give teams something else to spend practice time preparing for.

It is entirely possible that Smith moves to flanker or WR at some point but not this year. After another year at QB he will certainly know the pass routes.

Also, a cross field lateral can be a good surprise weapon on a kick return.

What about the possibility that Smith may prefer to transfer rather than sit on the bench for 3 years?

He won't sit on the bench for 3 years...he'll see PT either as the starter or backup, and in other positions on occasions. He's also our kickoff returner, so it's not like he never will see the field.
