QB Rex Kern (National Champion, OSU HOF, CFB HOF)

Funny that as a passer he was mediocre, but still he is remembered as one of the greatest OSU QBs of all time.

In all of the EA Sports NCAA football games, he is the starting quarterback for the All-Time Ohio State team. I always thought that was kind of funny, but I couldn't think of anyone who should be in his place.

Now, however, I think I'd put Troy Smith in that spot.

Congratulations to him. I don't know much about him as a person, but it's still a great honor for anyone. And, the more Buckeyes in there, the better. Maybe if enough Buckeyes get in there, they'll move that thing out of South Bend?

I think he eventually got his PhD (in math I think), he was involved with one of the local Columbus banks but he lives somewhere warm now...he's a great speaker, I think when Coop was here they broadcasted a speech he did at the senior tackle one year, he is very much a Woody kind of guy. He's had really bad luck health wise, lots of surgeries

Imperious Rex

I had the honor to attend that Rose Bowl, and watched all that was mentioned. the great ball handling, the tackling, and the 80 yard run by the Juice. Back then, his nickname was "Imperious Rex" - Rex meaning king in some forgotten language. One of the best ball handlers, and my OSU picture favorite is Rex running to his right, pointing downfield, with the ball hidden on his hip with his right hand.

Many other stories, with Kern waving off the punter on a 4th and 15 (? - a bunch), and then him either running or passing for the first down. Not a great passer (ala Krenzel), but effective when he did it. Remember this was in Woody's hey-day, (only three things happen when you pass, and two of them are bad). "Mace" was the designated passer, so when he came in, the defense put in their version of the nickel (I seem to remember that only two subs could come in at a time - but hey, I've got gray hair).

The defense was superb, and the offense was loaded. The 'Super Sophs' filled in the chinks of some pretty good upper classmen, and rolled. I still mourn the 69 Michigan game, and I was also in the stands when Stanford (Plunkett and Randy Vataha) beat the Buckeyes in the Rose. But for those two games, the Buckeyes would have had three national champions......an incredible number of those guys went into the Pros in the first round.....oh well, others probably have the same memories, they can speak. Oh yes, I remember an interception, and a lateral (forward unfortunately) to Tatum, who ran it back to the house. That would have brought us within 3, but the yellow flag brought it back, and OSU couldn't score.

He deserves his place in the Hall, and he was one of the best to play the game. He was a db for the Colts, and went out injured. But a COLLEGE Hall of Fame qb, absolutely.

The Game of Life is Hard to Play, gonna Lose it Anyway......the losing card I'll someday lay, so this is all I have to saaaaaay.....

I forgot about this...he recounted this story on 1460 radio this week in Columbus...it happened in his first game. I can't even imagine a player in their first game waving off a guy like Woody

NTD, I remember the Monday Q-back club meeting, Woody was recounting that he was thinking 'What the heck?"or somesuch, and smiling as he said it. Course, the tv panned to him as it happened (much like ESPiN's plays of the day today), and he's absolutely seething (neck quite red).

Course, in retrospect, it was showing 'great leadership' (only because he made it). Imagine a sophomore doing that today, let alone with a Bear, Ara, Woody, Bo........whew.

As they say, the rest is history. To me, he was much better q-back than Schlieschter (sp), Germaine, etc. because of his abilities to win.

:gobucks3: :gobucks4: :banger: as I said, the award is well deserved.

Holy crap - I can't even imagine a senior captain waving off Woody, much less a first-year. (In 1967, freshmen couldn't play on the team, so 1968 was his first year. Most of you probably knew that, though.)

If I were a coach, and ANY of my players did that, I would be pretty pissed. Freshman, sophomore.. whatever. He could be the Heisman winner. I'd be pissed.

I think it's "Schlichter." But that doesn't look right, either. Nevermind. But how would you rank Krenzel with Kern? Troy Smith? Ranking the quarterbacks can be kinda tricky, I think. Much of being a quarterback is leading your team. But it's also about making a crucial play. In both ways, I'd put Krenzel at or near the top of the list. Troy Smith, as well (despite his last game). I was born after Kern was gone from Ohio State, so I have to way of judging him. Other guys, like Hoying, were good quarterbacks, but they didn't seem to carry the team to victory. (In Hoying's defense, Eddie did a good job with that.)

Kern to speak at United Way kick-off
By JOE ARNOLD
Sports Writer
[email protected]

Kern quarterbacked Ohio State to a Rose Bowl berth and a national championship in 1968. He had a 93-percent winning percentage while at Ohio State and finished third in Heisman voting in 1969. He was later drafted by the Baltimore Colts in 1971, but his college career ultimately defined Kern. He will be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame on Dec. 4 in New York.

Even in his time away from football, Kern continues to help give back to Ohio State. He helped lead the charge to raise money for the Wayne Woodrow "Woody" Hayes Chair in National Security Studies. He also helped drum up $1.3 million for an athletics scholarship in honor of the 1968 national championship team.

"Rex has always been one to take fundraising to heart," Taylor said. "He really believed in Woody Hayes' 'Pay it forward' approach to giving. He's always been very generous.

"He's been active at every stage as a player and has led as a business executive too. He does it not out of a need for recognition, but out of a true sense of giving."
