QB Rob Schoenhoft (official thread)

I'm not questioning the assertions of the people in the know... I just thought it was kinda funny to see what Schoenhoft said in the article posted right after the news of the number change.

That was my first thought when I heard about the number change too.

But my statement about "BP's source" was only to prevent people from assuming that my next sentence meant that I disagreed with your take.

Schoenhoft makes a move
Working at TE as OSU tries QB trickery
BY JOHN ERARDI | [email protected]

NEW ORLEANS - The temporary move of former St. Xavier quarterback Robby Schoenhoft to tight end at Ohio State apparently was done to make way for some use of slashing, juking backup quarterback Antonio Henton in Monday night's BCS Championship Game.
It has become a not-so-quiet secret that the Buckeyes will use Henton some in the game to probe a vulnerability LSU has shown to a two-quarterback rotation that includes a gifted runner.
But OSU's coaching staff has never admitted that Henton is part of the plan, and thus nobody will explain why Schoenhoft has been moved to play tight end on the scout team to prepare for the title game.

Ohio State quarterback Robby Schoenhoft, a St. Xavier graduate, has been working as an LSU tight end in practices for Monday's BCS Championship Game. He's a QB at heart, but Schoenhoft says he's happy

Dispatch

With the college football season in the books and recruiting season taking over as signing day Feb. 6 approaches, transfer speculation season also has started.
The name at Ohio State getting the most attention is quarterback Rob Schoenhoft, who lost the competition for the starting job to Todd Boeckman at the start of the season and fell behind Antonio Henton in December. He was moved to tight end for the national championship game and apparently has no interest in staying there.
Schoenhoft is a third-year sophomore, which means his situation is similar to the one faced by former OSU quarterback Justin Zwick after he lost his job to Troy Smith: If he were to transfer to another school, he would have to sit out a year and then would have only one year of eligibility remaining.
On the other hand, if top prospect Terrelle Pryor signs with Ohio State, Schoenhoft might take another step back on the charts, so it's easy to see why the speculation has started.

The problem is that Robbie is an excellent athlete. I saw him play both basketball and football at the district and regional chamiponships level and he stood out at both. That doesn't necessarily translate into "starting QB," but it does sink into the minds of coaches who have only so many athletes to work with. Whether he's a better tight end than Ballard or Nichol remains to be seen. He should have decent hands, balance and size and I'd bet he's quite a bit faster than the first two.

This is a kid who would have been a stud at the MAC level and probably had the opportunity to play two sports. That he chose the challenge of Ohio State is a credit to his determination.

Question:

If Rob is a 3rd year sophomore this year, then he has 2 years eligibility left. The article blurb states that if he transfers, then he sits out one year (which I knew) and would only have one year eligibility left...does he have to sit out a season and lose that year of eligibility too?

I always knew you had to sit a year (if transferring to another D-1 school) but I thought you still had the same amount of eligibility left after your transfer year was "paid".

Edit:

NM...I found an explanation @ answers.yahoo that states a D-1 transfer not only sits out the year, but loses that season of eligibility as well...did not know that. Ouch.

Hes transferring to Delaware, which is 1-AA (FBS CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES!!!), which I believe means that he doesn't have to sit out a season (or loose a year of eligibility. The sitting out a year is only if he transfers to another D-1a school.

If true, Robbie would indeed be immediately eligible to play and also would have two years of eligibility. But as Deety asked...link?

Sorry, guess thats still just the rumor from one of the other boards. But given his situation, it wouldn't surprise me that he'd go 1-AA. Thought I read it over here. Sorry bout that.

This has been in the works since Christmas...Bill Greene has been all over. We've hinted at it in the Rumor Mill and decided to sit on it out of respect for the Bowl preparations.

This is the one we said would be announced any day...Credit goes to the "Bank" on this one.

Ohio State sophomore quarterback Rob Schoenhoft is visiting the University of Delaware this weekend and appears to be a likely candidate to join the Blue Hens, who lost the Football Championship Subdivision national title to Appalachian State this season.

Reached Friday night, Schoenhoft confirmed his visit but said he would refrain from commenting until Monday.

Ohio St. QB has eye on Delaware
6-foot-6 Schoenhoft has two years of eligibility
By KEVIN TRESOLINI, The News Journal

Rob Schoenhoft appeared in seven games as a backup quarterback at Ohio State in the 2007 season.
NEWARK -- There is a crowd of quarterbacks at Ohio State and a vacancy at the University of Delaware, which could be filled by a Buckeye aiming for a better opportunity.

Rob Schoenhoft, who just completed his sophomore season at Ohio State, is expected to visit UD this weekend. If he becomes Delaware's next quarterback, the Blue Hens will be rewarded, said Steve Specht, his former coach at St. Xavier High in Cincinnati.

"I think you're going to see a lot of things similar to the quarterback you had the last couple years," Specht said, comparing the 6-foot-6, 244-pound Schoenhoft with the graduating Joe Flacco, an All-American and NFL prospect.

"Robby can make every throw on the field, and he can make enough things happen with his legs. He's not going to run triple option, but he's very athletic for as big as he is and very nimble. He can throw on the run and in the pocket. He can make a mistake but still make the throw because his arm is so strong. That's why he's at Ohio State."

"He's talked to a few other schools, but I think his heart is set on Delaware," Specht said. "I think as long as something totally out of the ordinary doesn't happen, he'll be at Delaware. I know from conversations I've had with the coach that they're excited about him.

"He's the kind of kid they were looking for. He's a tremendous character guy. Delaware is an opportunity to compete, and that's what they're giving him."
