QB Troy Smith (2006 Heisman Trophy Winner)

i've been waiting to post about this, simply because i'm trying to distill and crystalize all these thoughts and emotions that are swirling around my head... all i can say is that this is a fairy tale. this kind of stuff just doesn't happen. the fact that he named Kirk, TJ, Doug, Steve, and Alex was fantastic. what a wonderful story. Congrats Troy.

these ARE the good old days.

Wow. Talk about being proud to be a Buckeye fan. Troy handled that speech so well. He said he was nervous, but I sure as hell couldnt see it. I almost cried myself when I see Tress' eyes well up.......

Anyone who thinks Tressel isn't real, didn't see that moment. Said it all for me.

Smith's ascension from the bottom to the top took two years. He took $500 from a booster and was suspended for two games, the Alamo Bowl that capped the 2004 season and the opener in 2005.
It was always my view that two wonderful pieces of Buckeye lore came from that Alamo Bowl game.

The most immediate was what we can all agree was Zwick's signature performance as a Buckeye. Injured, but had to hang in there and gutted out a Bowl win for his, Tressel's and the team's resumes.

The most significant and long lasting was the complete turning of a corner in the life of this young man who now has become the recipient of the seventh Heisman award by an Ohio State player. Without that lonely dose of discipline who knows what might have happened.

With it, we have growth, a new man and a great moment in Buckeye history.

Congratulations Troy -- on becoming everything positive that you could become.

Many people have observed how Jim Tressel's eyes welled up as Troy thanked him first of all earthly persons. But it was not Coach's eyes that spoke to me. It was his tight lipped frown.

That showed me that, while his emotions were evident, he was fighting hard to maintain the even-keeled dignity that he has modeled to Troy and to the whole team ever since he set foot on campus 5 years and 11 months ago.

Though Troy expressed only the gratitude that he felt at that moment for a life-time's worth of lessons, JT's visage was that of a man who was reliving every one of those "teachable moments" as he sat there listening intently. If The Coach is anything like me, his personal mind-movie slowed down considerably as it arrived at the defining teachable moment of Troy's career.

I would imagine that he remembered intently the moment when he told Troy, "Don't embarrass me". As Troy Smith expressed his gratitude to The Coach, Jim Tressel's stone faced tears expressed gratitude in return. As clearly as if spoken allowed they said, "Thank you Troy. Thank you for making me cherish that moment rather than regret it. Thank you for making me and This University so proud. Thank you for being the best Troy Smith can be."

Buckeye Planet thanks both of you, gentlemen. Thank you for making it so easy to be a Buckeye.

Just like Herbstriet said last night...If the Browns don't draft Troy (no matter where they are and if he is still availabe) the front office people are completely stupid and should be fired.....Troy could help out the Browns so much....and bring fans in the stands...
No, they should be fired if they draft Troy with no one to protect him. OT Thomas or Long should be the Browns first choice.
