I'm sure about coming into the combine out of shape, and not running.

I'm sure. As far as what I heard, he is going to work out at the tOSU Pro Day. He could run a 4.5 or something sick like that and completely blow everyone's doors off with accuracy and arm strength and they will still only talk about his height.:roll1:

Correct. Although, I don't think it was very Tressel like to go to the combine out of shape due to the banquet circuit.

i love troy, and the career he has had at tosu this past few seasons has been simply AMAZING. but i agree with what spielman said 2 days ago during his show on 1460. he said that it might be possible that troy is letting all the attention, success and fame get to his head. he DID show up in the NC game a bit overweight. besides, spiel had a good point. the combine is probably one of the few most important events in troy's life, IF he is aspired to play in the nfl. he should have shown up in top notch shape, eager to impress his future employer and take it more serious than he has. spielman also made a good point that with all the doubts on his height and perhaps his ability to be a successful nfl qb, or lack thereof, troy should not have using "banquet" as excuse. it IS kinda lame. he can find gym almost anywhere he goes for all these award events. A potential career in nfl should outweight today's fame. it just seems like troy has his priority mess up this time.....

Classic combine confusion

Scouts foolish to ignore QB Smith's college success

Posted: Tuesday February 27, 2007 5:07PM; Updated: Tuesday February 27, 2007 5:44PM

For all that Troy Smith accomplished the past two-plus years at Ohio State, I don't think I've ever been more impressed with him than I am right now. After I read the various reports out of last weekend's NFL combine in Indianapolis, it's become apparent that Smith managed to win a Heisman Trophy, rack up ridiculous passing stats and lead his team to 20 straight victories in spite of the fact he's a crappy quarterback.
Yep. You read that right. The NFL cognoscenti have spoken. After eyeballing Smith in shorts and watching him throw 18 practice passes against no defense, the connoisseurs with the clipboards and the stop watches have decreed that the former Ohio State quarterback, to put it simply, stinks. Once considered a late-first or early second-round pick, Smith will now be fortunate to land in the third or fourth round based on the buzz in Indy.

Smith seeing height of doubt
Heisman winner hit with queries on shortcomings

A self-described optimist, Troy Smith was confronting his first possible audible.
Gathered around the former Ohio State quarterback last week at the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis was a group of callous pro football writers. It can be a sinister group that often views the Heisman Trophy as nothing other than a sexy jumping-off point before the crash.
"You make it sound like being 6-foot is a disease," Smith said, snapping at one reporter.
Smith has the Heisman Trophy to showcase but he will enter the NFL draft lucky to be among the top 100 players chosen.
There is even speculation that because of his relatively small stature, and questions about his arm strength following his miserable performance in the national championship game against Florida, that he might drop to the draft's second day. That's when teams fill in roster spots.
Nothing sharpens pens like the story of a tumble from a pedestal.

I am standing by Troy but questions have been raised now.Mine is when they passed out that Heisman in December was Troy satisfied. Did he look at that moment as The end. The great ones whether in sports bussiness or politics are never satisfied. The no 1 and 1A examples are MJ and Tiger Woods. Troy has been doing a lot of the banquets telling people the Browns better take him, etc. He needs to get his edge back..hopefully all the nay-sayers this week will get him back on track. As far as the combine and workouts..Troy wants to be a QB, I am beginning to think he believes if he comes in lighter and runs a fast 40 time, he won't get a chance at QB teams will want him as a WR or something. Good Luck Troy, you've proven a lot to me..now you have another audience to amaze.

I'm beginning to HATE the combine. When Mario Williams passed Bush as the top pick in the draft, I considered it all a fluke/lost cause. It's fun to look at bench reps and 40 times and everything, but it's going a little overboard in my opinion when they begin to throw out the player's ENTIRE college resume and start from scratch (which includes, 18 throws, a 40 time, a shuttle time, a vert & some bench reps).

Oh well, Troy has been under the gun before and aside the UF game (he didn't have a prayer in that game), he has come out on top every time adversity is thrown his way. I bet he is insanely motivated now and ready to shred it up at Pro Day.

I'm still a believer that he'll start in the NFL someday and make some team very happy. I'm not buying into all this BS. We've watched him more closely and religiously than any toolbag scout who maybe watched a season of video and 45 minutes worth of work at a mass camp. Whatever.

Excellent post. I just think that the combine needs to be come a distant memory ASAP. Now that it is over, the scouts and decision makers for the teams will go back to looking at tape of the players they are considering. That is when the success they had in college can begin to push out the memories of what they did over a few day period that was not against any kind of competition. The Pro Day will help Troy as well, I think. He will no doubt spend the time now before that getting back into shape and in the football mind-set. He will be in comfortable surroundings and will be able to throw to his own guys in the drills as well as run on what has proven to be a fast track in Columbus. I think a combination of this with his highlight real will make most intelligent football people forget that he did not do much at the combine and that he even said anything like "banquet circuit". I have no doubt in my mind that Troy will be a successful quarterback in the NFL wherever he lands. I am just going to continue to be a homer and hope it is in Cleveland. :)

It is just amazing to me that you don't hear anyone say shit about the fact that Brady Quinn did not even participate in the throwing drills. All he did was the bench. Why does he get a free pass??

I like it... the combine is a candyshop window test for the teams who have poor staff/scouts anyway. Mario Williams jumping RB and VY exposed Houston's scouting. They blinked, and convinced themselves out of two great opportunities.
Unfortunately, ours has been exposed in the past too.
Troy will go where he goes... I'm hoping all this negativity scares away the junk teams and he goes somewhere like Chicago.

Brady STILL manages to make these lists. Unbelievable. Oh well.

Here's to hoping Troy can rake in some more hardware. Might be a nice fresh breath of air for him considering the scrutiny he's gone through lately.

Sorry, I moved the Sullivan Award to a seperate thread and added polls.
