QB Troy Smith (2006 Heisman Trophy Winner)

osucollegebuck;778355; said:
whats the latest a heisman trophy winner has gone in the draft? Please throw out Jason White who had injuries, I mean a completely healthy Heisman winner?
Charlie Ward was undrafted. Most of that is because he said if he wasn't taken in the first round, then he was going to play basketball. He wasn't, and he did.

Troy Smith let his workout do the talking yesterday, and the results might have stemmed the rising tide of naysayers. The Ohio State quarterback had seen his draft stock slide ever since he won the Heisman Trophy in December. Smith suffered through a disastrous national title game, then did not wow scouts at the NFL combine in February, particularly when he said he wasn?t running the 40-yard dash in part because he had been on the banquet circuit.

Continued....

Smith ran two 40s, in 4.65 and 4.71 seconds. That would have placed him second among the 15 quarterbacks who ran at the combine, behind only Jared Zabransky of Boise State.

yeah, speed for a QB is real important. :roll1:
It may not be to you and me, but Troy could have improved his standing with scouts if he would have had better times. Those aren't bad times for a QB, but something closer to 4.55-4.6 would have gotten more attention. NFL scouts drool over numbers. He needs all the help he can get at this point after tanking in the BCS.

OHIO STATE: MARCH 10
Ohio State worked out today, and we'll have the results later on. Ted Ginn Jr., who didn't work at the Combine, also didn't work out at the Pro Day, citing his still sore foot.

Player Position Gil's comments
Troy Smith QB Smith (222 pounds) ran 4.77 and 4.72 in the 40 on what is considered a fast track. He also notched a 36 ?-inch vertical, a 10-foot-2 broad jump, a 4.23 short shuttle and a 6.93 three-cone drill. He spent 30 minutes throwing the ball in passing drills, and he looked good throwing to Anthony Gonzalez, among others. He was very competitive, trying the short shuttle three times in order to get a better time. All in all, he probably helped himself in the draft.

look at the shuttle time. Troy's never been 'fast' per se. he's more shifty with quick feet. he always has been.
He was definitely more than 0.06s quicker than Zwick though. Rewatch the '04 michigan game and tell me that Troy Smith runs a 4.71, he's lost a step or two.

Now, he's also about 50% more accurate with his passes and an order of magnitude better at reading and exploiting defenses so he's still ahead of the curve as far as quarterbacking goes.

man, who the fuck cares where he gets drafted.

i'm more interested in which team takes him.

he needs the right coach.

in my opinion, troy became a little too robotic. it was necessary for his development, but he can't forget his true instincts. he's got UNBELIEVABLE instincts. he needs a coach that will let him ball.

the first michigan game, and the final 2 drives of the 2nd michigan game ... he was just BALLING. and the 2nd half of that 2004 purdue game ... this is the troy smith that i know and love. the one who INSPIRES.

i am a fan of the troy smith that the media/buckeye fans hated. the "reformed" troy smith ..... i don't know.

he knows who he truly is. he needs a coach that believes in him.

i love tressel, but the fact that he stuck with zwick as long as he did .... i mean, what the hell.

now that troy has learned to watch film and be a student of the game ... he's got to combine that intelligence with his natural instincts. it would be a shame if he gets turned into a robot.

now that he's going to end up on some random NFL team, I don't care about wins and losses, or mistakes. i want him to be real. i want him to inspire. i want him to play like jeff garcia, without being gay.

i want to see a QB that just finds a way to get first downs. somehow, someway, he'll pick up those 10 yards.

his instincts are so honed.

you can't measure instincts.

he can just sense things.

he needs an obi-wan kenobi type coach. someone who will remind him to "USE THE FORCE".

the NFL is full of idiots that think way too much (the houstan texans GM, for example. his "reasoning" was that because they play in the same division as the colts, they needed a pass rusher. WTF? and now I hear they want to draft Quinn?)

i want him to end up with a coach that is instinctual. a coach who can understand and respect troy for what he is, instead of trying to turn him into something that he's not.

i hope troy slides deep in the draft. i want him to be overlooked. i want him to be disrespected.

he got stroked by the media for 51 days.

troy, like most competitive people, do not respond well to being stroked.

he needs to be ignored. doubted.

the thing about troy, is that he has a PRESCENCE. i met him in 2003, before anyone knew who the hell he was. there was a look in his eye. it was as if he KNEW he was going to do something great.

listen to how his teammates talk about him. especially tony gonzalez. you can't measure troy's worth .... you just have to be AROUND him. and only his teammates can truly appreciate him. because they feed off him.

i really think that one of the reasons for that florida game, was the simple fact that troy wasn't around his teammates.

he is going to step into his NFL team, and very quickly, you are going to start reading about how his teammates want him starting. they might say politically correct things ..... but if you read between the lines .... they want him out there.

because he is a FIGHTER. he LEADS. he makes you BELIEVE.

in the same way that everyone loves playing with a great point guard .... all football players love playing for a guy like troy. they don't care what the coaches, media, and fans think .... they want to play for troy.

i remember in that '04 purdue game, troy's scrambling for a first down, and the safety comes to knock him out of bounds, and troy just lowers his shoulders and JACKS HIM UP. he doesn't get any extra yards out of it, but the entire OSU sideline behind him leaps into the air. you can almost hear them going "oh hell no!"

this is what i'm talking about. you can't measure this man. you can't quantify his worth.

the mind is only the tip of the iceberg. the great athletes, they play with their instincts, and with their SOUL. they develop their mind .... but they know when to turn it off. otherwise you suffer the "paralysis of analysis".

just watch those clips of troy. how in the hell can he sense pressure, right before he's about to get hit? you don't get that from watching film. that's INSTINCT.

if troy's going to have any chance in the NFL, he's got to trust his instinct. he's got to believe in his true self. he's been a quarterback from day 1. he just knows how to GET IT DONE. and i don't want some shitty NFL coach fucking around with his life. the NFL is filled with these idiots. i'm sick of them.

even though i'm a browns fan, i was a big fan of bill cowher. troy would thrive under a coach like him. or a dick vermeil. you get the picture.

the worst coach for troy, would be one who thinks he knows everything. a cold, sterile, calculating coach.

i personally want him in chicago. that team would embrace him instantly. that city would fall in love with him. and he'd lead them to the promised land.

but even if he never plays a down in the NFL ..... he has inspired me. more than this post could ever capture.

the title of the bill livingston column, after the 05 michigan game, sums it up best:

"Ohio boys will be Troys"
