QB Troy Smith (2006 Heisman Trophy Winner)

Smith, 6-1 in cleats, was short by NFL quarterback standards, and his ability to scramble served him better in college than in the NFL, where pocket presence is more important than mega-mobility. On the positive side, he owned a strong arm and possessed leadership skills. Those two positives probably allowed Smith to last with the Ravens as long as he did. Several teammates, including Pro Bowl safety Ed Reed, were vocal in their support. Even coach John Harbaugh praised him.

?He has played well in the preseason. I think he makes plays. He does bring a unique ability,? Harbaugh said. ?He escapes trouble and makes plays with his feet and his arm. We?ve always liked Troy.?

But like doesn?t get you a paycheck in the NFL, where the franchise had better love you. More important, the team better desperately need you.

Smith was Baltimore?s third quarterback, which is like being bubble wrap after the package is opened. It might someday come in handy, but most of the time ends up in the trash bin as a nonessential. Whether Smith should have been No. 3 is debatable, but obviously the Ravens thought they needed to add Marc Bulger during the offseason as further insurance to back up starter Joe Flacco.

The biggest knock on Smith has been his accuracy, which suffered because he was always mobile enough to escape pressure. He did not need to stand in the pocket and learn to make the tight throws into small windows that are required of pro quarterbacks. As one NFL observer put it, ?This guy is Donovan McNabb Lite.?

Smith had one final chance to prove himself Tom Brady Lite on Thursday in Baltimore?s final exhibition game, but he threw two interceptions in a 27-21 loss to St. Louis.

It?s brutal that two mistakes in a preseason game can seal one?s doom, but that is the business of the NFL. Convert a 52-yard field goal, as former OSU kicker Mike Nugent did for the Bengals on Thursday, and you win the job. Throw a pass that might be only inches off line and you?re handed your walking papers.

To his credit, Smith understands how it works. He seldom has publicly rued his fate, which took an unfair turn two seasons ago when a viral infection sidelined him just when it appeared he might win the starting job.

?It?s a business, first and foremost,? he said. ?You can?t do anything about that. The only thing you can control and have an effect on is what you do on a daily basis. As a player and as a man and as a quarterback, that?s what I worry about.?

His fame might not be what it was inside Ohio Stadium, but the size of a headline has never determined the depth of a man?s character.

San Francisco would be perfect if they hadn't signed David fucking Carr in the offseason. He'd be perfect for that offense.

49ers release Nate Davis to pick up Troy Smith | ProFootballTalk.com

Just wish they would've released the mistake who is David Carr instead of the promising young QB in Nate Davis. Someone will get a future starter in Davis.

Alex Smith will get every opportunity as the starter, so Troy is still a backup. But if Alex Smith doesn't impress this year, the Niners will likely draft a young guy and put Troy in. Just my view on the situation.

Smith to Ginn, TD? 49ers are now my favorite NFL team.

Doubt Troy will get much action unless it's a blowout (don't expect any of those) or if Alex gets injured (most likely going to happen at some point).

But yeah, Alex Smith to Ginn, TD. They have some chemistry.

The thing about drafting a project/developmental guy like Davis (who does have NFL talent) and then spending time and resources on trying to build him up is the guy has to want to work to develop. By all accounts, Davis was not doing that.

Re: Carr, they just wanted a veteran to be the primary backup and Carr was basically the best guy out there.

You're right about the last part, though. If Alex Smith fails this year Troy will get every opportunity to be the guy next year. I'm sure that's part of why he signed with 'em.

The problem I had with Carr is that they traded Shaun Hill for a 7th rounder, and Hill was more than capable in that offense to be a backup. And then they gave Carr too much money considering he probably won't play much, if at all at this point.

Davis showed plenty of talent, I'd much rather spend resources on him than David Carr. A non-motivated Davis still looked like a fine backup.
