QB Will Howard (Official Thread)

Really like this guy already. Seems like a natural born leader that the guys will love in the locker room. I've seen plenty of his play and already know he's a player, but hearing him talk really made me feel like we've got an upgrade here. I won't say anything bad about Kyle, but it just seems like Will has a personality that you want at QB.

I thought of (what I think is) a fun game while talking with friends.

One passing stat line is McCord last year, one is JT Barrett in his first season, one is JT Barrett in his fourth season, one is Will Howard last year.

Can anyone guess which is which?

219/357 61.3% 2643 yards, 24 TDs, 10 ints

203/314 64.6% 2834 yards 34 TDs, 10 ints

229/348 65.8% 3170 yards 24 TDs, 6 ints

240/371 64.7% 3053 yards 35 TDs, 9 ints

Meanwhile, Howard has (career) 227 carries, 929 yards, 4.1 per carry, 20 TDs on the ground.

Barrett had 656 carries, 3262 yards, 43 TDs.

McCord had (career) 44 carries, -77 yards, 0 TDs.

Even if the passing is the same, the run threat is a major improvement with Howard, and it’s reasonable to think the weapons and coaching will result in improved throwing for Howard, too.

I agree with the point you're making, even if I can't go along with the way you're making it.

It is not entirely accurate to say that Howard's numbers are similar to the others. Ranking 54th in the nation in PE is not the same as being in the top 15.

BUT...

The thing that really brings Howard's numbers down is his yards per attempt.

Take that same qb and put him in Ryan Day's offense and give him Brian Hartline's receivers... Yeah... I can see that qb having better numbers.

And then there's the fact that this qb was chosen by Ryan Day. Frankly, if that's all I knew about him, I'd be ok with it. Selecting qb's is not exactly a weakness in Day's coaching arsenal.

And then there's the fact that, according to Howard himself, Day saw things in him that he believes he can correct. Developing qb's is not exactly a weakness in Day's coaching arsenal.

So even if I can't accept that the numbers to this point are "similar" (yes, we can have different definitions for similar), I agree emphatically that there are very good reasons for optimism.

And Howard didnt have MHJ, Thomas, or McLaurin either.

All the things pointed to Ohio State.' Patience paid off for new Buckeye QB Will Howard

It took time, but Howard wound up where he wanted to be after entering the transfer portal.

“All the things pointed to Ohio State,” Howard said last week, speaking to the Scarlet and Gray media for the first time.

While they reached out to Howard initially, the Buckeyes were clear that they wanted to wait until after the Cotton Bowl before deciding on adding another quarterback. After 2023 starter Kyle McCord entered the transfer portal, head coach Ryan Day felt it was important to give sophomore Devin Brown the opportunity to show he could be QB1.

“They were kind of holding me off a little bit just 'til after that game, just in fairness,” Howard said. “And I was patient and waited my time, and it all worked out in due time.”

There were other suitors for Howard. Those that stood out included USC and Miami.

The Trojans had just produced Heisman Trophy winner and possible No. 1 overall NFL Draft pick Caleb Williams. Head coach Lincoln Riley has a successful track record with quarterbacks, including developing Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray during his time at Oklahoma.

While Mario Cristobal doesn’t have the same history with quarterbacks, the Hurricanes had an opening – eventually filled by transfer portal quarterback Cam Ward – at the position after Tyler Van Dyke transferred to Wisconsin.

“At times, it felt rushed,” Howard said of his time in the transfer portal. “And at times, it felt like I was pressing, like people were, 'We need a commitment. We need this. We need that.' But just throughout the whole process, I just prayed and trusted God and knew that His plan for me would be greater and that I would end up where I was meant to be.”
.
.
.
“I feel like the resounding thing that I heard from these NFL guys and from people around the league was, 'You need to play more, and, 'We need to see more high-level play.' And I feel like I played a lot of football in my time at K-State, but I only had one year where I was really the true starter and where I played the whole year,” Howard said. “For the most part, I was a backup filling in. And I felt like there's a bunch of statistics and things that they look at and I was on the very lowest end of like the amount of yards that you're supposed to throw for. You look at the success stories versus the failure stories, and there was just so many signs are pointing to coming back. And really in my heart, and that was at the end of the day, I mean, it was up to me, it was my gut. And I felt like I just wasn't ready to leave college yet. I still had more I wanted to accomplish.”

National Signing Day 2024: Every Big Ten football team's most impactful recruit, transfer

The Big Ten is full of impact recruits and transfers this cycle.

OHIO STATE BUCKEYES

12219653.png

Most impactful freshman signee: Jeremiah Smith, WR

Most impactful transfer: Will Howard, Kansas State, QB

Ohio State had its worst offensive scoring production since 2011 last season when it averaged 30.5 points per game. The Buckeyes loaded up on high-level talent both in recruiting and the transfer portal with intentions of reclaiming the Big Ten crown in 2023. Smith is one of the best wide receiver prospects in a while and should make an immediate impact in Columbus. Ohio State will have a new starting quarterback to distribute the ball as well with Howard adding a dual-threat element back into the offensive attack.
