RB Chris "Beanie" Wells (All B1G, All-American)

Beanie Wells will make preseason debut this week
Posted by Josh Alper on August 21, 2012

The Cardinals still haven?t chosen their starting quarterback, but they?ll have both of their tailbacks on the field for the first time in the preseason on Thursday.

Coach Ken Whisenhunt announced Tuesday that running back Beanie Wells will see his first game action of the preseason against the Titans this week. Wells started practicing last week for the first time since knee surgery in January to repair an injury that bothered him all of last season. Whisenhunt sounds happy with what he?s seen so far.

?I?m excited to see him in a game,? Whisenhunt said, via Darren Urban of the team?s website. ?There?s no concern with him at all with his health.?

Ryan Williams made his 2012 debut against the Raiders last week after missing all of last season and ran for 25 yards and a touchdown on five carries. Whisenhunt said that Wells will see a similar workload against Tennessee.

There was a report last week that Wells was still having trouble cutting, so it will be interesting to see what kind of form Wells is in after a layoff that was much longer than anyone anticipated when he originally had the operation.

Arizona Cardinals' Beanie Wells back on field
by Kent Somers - Aug. 23, 2012
azcentral sports

NASHVILLE - Running back Beanie Wells made his preseason debut Thursday night, but that's not the reason he sported a freshly shaved head.

"You know what? I got a bad haircut," Wells said. "Somebody messed up my hairline. I already got a sensitive hairline."

Wells didn't think he looked great on the field, either, but that's to be expected, he said. It was Wells' first appearance in a game since the 16th week of last season. He had knee surgery in the off-season, and the Cardinals have been conservative in using him this preseason.

Wells started and gained 12 yards on six carries.

"I have more rust than I thought, but it felt good to be out there," Wells said. "I've got to pick my legs up a little more, get more comfortable with being out there. I always need the preseason because of how rusty you get, and I hadn't played football since Dec. 24.

"It's progress, definitely progress."

The Cardinal offensive line is abysmal. Beanie has no chance this year I'm afraid. Guy will have to create on his own everything that he gets, and they don't have the patience to give him the ball 20-25 times a game.

A rare occurrence: Beanie Wells playing vs. Seahawks

Arizona Cardinals update:

The Cardinals can look back on many games in 2011 and think of all the wouldas, couldas and shouldas. Their first game against the Seahawks, a 13-10 loss, is one of them.

It was the third week of the season, starting running back Beanie Wells didn't play because of a hamstring injury, and Alfonso Smith handled most of the running duties that day. Smith gained 54 yards on 17 carries as a backup to Chester Taylor, who started. Taylor gained 20 yards on 8 carries.

The Cardinals missed Wells most that day on short yardage plays. They converted just three of 14 third-down opportunities.

Three of those were run calls on third-and-one. Smith was stopped for no gain on two of them and lost 4 yards on another. He did convert on on a fourth-and-one carry. It wasn't all his fault because the blocking obviously wasn't there. But you have to think Wells could have made a difference. At 229 pounds, he is about 20 pounds heavier than Smith.

"It definitely was (frustrating)," Wells said of missing that game.

Wells missed the second Seattle game, too. He had a sore knee and it was the season finale, which meant nothing. Wells has played against the Seahawks just three times out of a possible six games. Over the last two years, he played against them only once. He gained 54 yards on 14 carries in Seattle in 2010. He had a touchdown in that game.

Beanie Wells ended up on the injury report today with a hamstring issue. He told Kent Somers he?d play, but he is listed as questionable. Interestingly, Wells has just missed three games in the last 30 the Cardinals have played ? and each one has been against Seattle. He sat out the meaningless finale last year in UoP, but the game he missed in Seattle ? because of a hamstring ? ended up being crucial when the Cards lost by three and could have used their star back.

?It was frustrating for me in that particular game having to sit back and watch, not be able to help the team,? Wells said.

Veteran Chester Taylor was Wells? replacement and couldn?t do anything. (LaRod Stephens-Howling, who had 93 yards rushing in the second Seattle game, was injured too.) Alfonso Smith did a decent job in relief, but the Cards certainly could have used Ryan Williams. If Beanie is limited or out Sunday, Williams will be there this time.

? Talking to Wells before the hamstring problem, I asked him how his recovery from his knee was. ?I am getting there,? Beanie said. ?I?m not going to say I am there yet, but it is definitely coming.?

Setting expectations for questionable Wells
September, 7, 2012
By Mike Sando | ESPN.com

The Arizona Cardinals' Beanie Wells was a surprise addition to the team's injury report Friday. The Cardinals listed the running back as questionable, citing a hamstring injury.

Wells was listed as questionable with hamstring injuries twice since entering the NFL in 2009, both last season -- against Minnesota and the New York Giants. He carried 47 times for 198 yards (4.2 per attempt) and four touchdowns in those games.

The Cardinals have listed Wells as questionable eight other times since 2009. He carried 97 times for 387 yards (4.0 per carry) and two scores in those games. Wells carried 10 or fewer times in five of those eight games, including a 2010 game with one carry against the Vikings. Knee, hip and groin injuries were cited for those eight games.

Wells' status against the Seahawks for Sunday could give the team reason to funnel additional carries toward promising second-year running back Ryan Williams. Williams, like Wells, is coming off knee surgery.

Beanie Wells - RB - ARZ - Sep. 17

Despite Ryan Williams' early-season struggles, the Cardinals plan to "continue to split time" in the backfield between Williams and Beanie Wells.
Despite miserable production (1.2 YPC) and lost fumbles in each of his first two NFL games, Williams was given words of encouragement by coach Ken Whisenhunt after Week 2, and even finished out the game playing ahead of Wells. Wells is at 2.8 YPC himself.

Beanie Wells - RB - ARZ - Sep. 23

Beanie Wells acknowledged following Sunday's win over the Eagles that he may be dealing with turf toe.
The toe injury knocked Wells out of the game in the second half, and Wells did not return. Ryan Williams proceeded to run aggressively and tough to help seal the game for Arizona. Cardinals doctors will "check out" Wells on Monday. The Cardinals face the Dolphins' run-tough defense in Week 4. Sep. 23
