Maurice Clarett, the former Ohio State running back who ran afoul of the law, was able to move from a prison cell to a dormitory step-down center after a Franklin County judge granted his request for early release yesterday.

A buff Clarett, 26, told Common Pleas Judge David W. Fais that he wants to finish his college education - possibly at Ohio State - and has a long-term plan of running a fitness center for geriatric clients.

And football would be OK, too, if the opportunity arises, Clarett said.

Clarett was brought to Columbus from the Toledo Correctional Institution this week. He had applied in February for judicial release from the same judge who sentenced him to 71/2 years in prison in September 2006 for robbery and weapons convictions.

"I'm humbled as you make this consideration," Clarett told Fais. "I've made incredible progress since I've been incarcerated."

Maurice Clarett, the former Ohio State football player who spent more than three years in prison, is taking classes again, the university announced on Monday.

Clarett started classes on Monday, after the university allowed him reentry, an Ohio State spokesman said in a statement released Monday evening.

"Maurice Clarett has been granted reentry into The Ohio State University, following a review by the College of Education and Human Ecology," said Jim Lynch, director of media relations for Ohio State.

good for him. it appears hes on the right track. i hope maurice takes full advantage of the opportunity.

im also impressed by the university for letting him in considering that it would seem the easy thing would have been to say no after all that has happened.

Yeah interesting choice for Maurice, you'd think that being around campus would just be a constant reminder to him of what he gave up. On one hand that could serve as motivation to stay on a good path, on the other it could get pretty depressing

Is he indeed at Ohio State main campus? I figured he'd be at a branch school.

Well the article doesn't say specifically but I would guess he would be on the main campus, admissions tend to be a lot more lax for older people (ie not right out of high school) + the fact that he already earned credits there. It says in the article it was the College of Human Ecology that granted him readmission, so I'm assuming he's picking up in the program he left off in.

Regardless it also certainly doesn't seem like the most conspicious place he could be

In my opinion, this is nothing but positive news for Ohio State. After the wringer that he put the university through, to move on amicably shows a real sign of institutional maturity.

I would not be surprised if Jim Tressel had a hand in lobbying for this either.

Great news. His enrolling at Ohio State suggests he may indeed have learned some valuable life lessons.

Life after football begins eventually for all players; it begins now for MoC. Honestly, I admit I still have some warm feelings about this kid. Incredible college running back - for one year.
