RB Maurice Clarett (B1G Freshman of the Year, National Champion)

I know that Maurice has made some atrocious decisions, and for that, he's doing hard time. I also remember how he was unavailable due to injury for a signifcant portion of the season. However, as others have said, we simply do not play for, or win, in 2002 without him. Jwins correctly noted that his production in the NC was pedestrian, but as he also noted, that D was fantastic, and it was keying on Maurice. That gave Krenzel the opportunity, and boy did Craig shine :)

Yes, Maurice brought baggage, and frankly, left a lot of baggage in his wake. But there is a part of me that will always love this guy because of his football heart. For me, having missed the 1968 season....my life as a Buckeye fan has been absolutely smothered with near misses, heartbreak and what ifs. Maurice and the rest of that 2002 TEAM took away a lot of pain for me. (Yes, I know it's silly that I even care that much about football, but that's a subject for another thread).

I don't know if Maurice coulda/woulda/shoulda been the greatest and I certainly know that Beans brought the goods in more ways than just carrying the team. What I also know is that Maurice and the TEAM brought me the kind of joy that I can otherwise only get from my wife/son. As I get further from 2002, I savor that more and more. Beanie leaves with a much higher Buckeye legacy and is someone to be very proud of, but Maurice will always be special in his own way as well.

I hope the young man...who as others have noted will STILL be a young man when he is not incarcerated, pulls it together somewhere in life. There's still plenty of time for him to become a great person.

LSU 1485yds, 3.2 ypc, 14td
Miami 2149yds, 3.69 ypc 19td

and the LSU game was last year, how can you compare their draft picks?

Combine that with the RBs LSU faced that year:
Brandon Ore
Matt Forte
Darren McFadden
Felix Jones
Beanie Wells

Add to that the fact that LSU's defense was extremely banged up for the year.

Clarett never faced a run defense as good as LSU's 2007 D. Beanie torched that defense for 170+ yards.
In 2007, Beanie had 20 rushes for 146 yards (7.30 average) and one touchdown against LSU; this accounted for 41.4% of OSU's offense in that game (146/353). Take out Beanie's long run (65-yard TD), and his yards per carry drops to a rather pedestrian 4.26; take out his other long run (29 yards - the stiff arm play), and his average drops to 2.89; in all, 15 of Beanie's 20 carries were for 5 yards or less; 11 were for 3 yards or less. Arkansas, led by Darren McFadden and Felix Jones, rushed for 385 yards (7.26 average) and scored 50 points against LSU's famed defense. Even Ole Miss rushed for 201 yards (7.18 average) against the Bayou Bengals. LSU's defense gave up an average of 19.9 points and 106.1 yards rushing (3.2 average) per game in 2007; the Buckeyes scored 24 against them and rushed for 145 yards.

In 2002, MoC had 20 rushes for 119 yards (5.95 average) and one touchdown against Michigan; plus two receptions for 35 yards; this accounted for 58.3% of OSU's offense in that game (154/264); take out Clarett's long rush (28 yards), and his average drops to 4.79; take out his second long rush (18 yard), and his average drops to 4.05; in all, 12 of MoC's rushes were for 3 yards or less, and the other 8 rushes were for 6 yards or greater; MoC's final three attempts were for 0, 0, and 2 as the Buckeyes tried to run out the clock; with those three plays taken out (which might as well have been Krenzel taking a knee), MoC's average goes up to 6.88 (17 carries for 117 yards). Michigan's defense gave up an average of 20.4 points and 123.2 yards rushing (3.4 average) per game in 2002; the Buckeyes scored 14 against them, and rushed for 140 yards.

In the end, it's all just a bunch of numbers, so take them for what they are worth. Stats may reflect greatness, but they don't define greatness. I saw both backs play, and in my humble and semi-educated opinion, MoC was just a little bit greater than Beanie.

It's kinda nice that we can have this argument.... :)

i guess we should all take heed to the advice in my signature ...

both are great backs... MoC was part of a NC at OSU and who knows what more could've been, and Beanie has been one of the greatest (best against scUM)

(and Beanie was better than MoC)
:wink2:

Mo vs Beanie

I can see your point but don't necessarily agree with your logic. Eliminating Beanie's longer runs before comparing their stats/ averages doesn't give a fair representation of what he can do. Taking the offensive line and QB play into account, I don't think you can penalize him for being more of homerun threat than a ground and pound, three yards and a cloud of dust back. That said, Mo was a true freshman starting at Ohio State... He was a game changer as well and would have continued to do great things had he had more time. IMO, we didn't get to see enough of Mo to really make the comparison.

Ultimately, both will have their place in Ohio State history...

I don't mean to bust on anyone here, but I can't believe people are using phrases like "best...I've ever seen" with MoC. Yes, he had a lot of potential, and yes, he played like the hard-assed arrogant prick he was, which was really good on the football field. But people who have seen our other backs, Keith Byars in his prime in particular...I just don't know, I don't see what MoC showed in 6 games that made him the greatest anything. The bottom line is the great ones, the really great ones, as in the ones who win the Heisman, or go on to be Jerry Rice, have 3 elements:

-Raw natural talent
-Stunning work ethic
-Ability and desire to take advice and coaching to go from being good to being great

I'll give him one of those, ok 2...Anyone think MoC had all 3 though? He was too much of a prima donna to be one of the "all-time greatest" because if nothing else he would have gotten in his own way of doing so. Yes, it was a great play against Taylor in the NC game. But watch some film, read some accounts, and even for 1 game I'll take Archie, Byars, or Eddie over MoC any day.

We've had numerous issues concerning this thread. Everyone knows this site does not condone any form of Buckeye bashing...and this thread is a very easy target for such bashing to occur. There are still some very volatile emotions concerning Maurice and we understand that. However, there is a consistent escalation in the temperament of this thread every time someone digs it up.

Therefore, this thread is closed for discussion. We will post any relevant news if needed but hopefully this thread sinks into the archives.

If you have any questions or something that needs to be posted, send a PM.

Grazie.

Purposefully Wasting My Time With This Post

I just recently received one of the most humorous hate letters. It was five pages long and boy did it make me laugh. I laughed at the shallow approach to make me feel horrible. I want to clue everyone in real quick. I am mentally and spiritually above my past. I have transcended the madness. You can?t make me feel bad by telling me what I did in the past. I just want to say, ?Thanks for paying attention.? Your hatred keeps me relevant. Every time you mention my name, you keep me alive.

Please understand that you can?t steal my joy because you didn?t give it to me. Your hate doesn?t stop me from developing my life. You can?t stop me from educating myself and you can?t stop me from applying myself. You can?t stop my family and friends from supporting me. And you can?t stop me from growing once I am released. You can?t steal the wisdom that I have gained and you can?t stop my influence and power. You can?t erase what I did on that field and no matter what people say I played a major role in putting Ohio State where they are now. I helped bring the prestige back to the football program. Every time you mention that championship, be sure to mention my contributions. I helped to bring us out of that slump.

I inspire people to graduate early and get started on their college careers. Check the old films of me and see who inspired Ohio State?s style of running. Always remember that the same attitude that you hate and criticize is the same attitude that took us to that championship.

The weak and meek shall always perish. I am still here because the strong survive. Pay attention, I am not coming back to play football for the sake of money. I have got some business ventures that I am going to pursue that will secure me and my family?s future. If I ever get the chance to step on that field again, I will come back to make my family and friends smile. I have a gift and I am extremely talented. I might not get the money that I expected in the past but I guarantee that someone will smile again when they see me play. I am a beast on that field. My mind and body are together. I am a great investment.

In due time, I will have my college education. My girlfriend already has hers. My daughter is gorgeous and I have a vision and I?m inspired to fulfill it. My mother loves me and supports me unconditionally. And my big brother out West told me that my spot on the team is reserved. Let me give you some advice: Get real and go start a conversation with someone of your stature. I am cut from a different cloth. I just got off track. This was a waste of time but it was necessary. All those who agree say, ?I?.
