Rich Rodriguez (official thread of last laughs)

So - anyone have a pdf of the DickWad contract? Is there a clause that lets scUM fire him now if their internal investigation finds out that he broke rules and brought them major infractions?

It seems to me that they would be well served to cut and run now. They save a boat load of money, and no matter what bad things happen the next several years, they have the villain ID'd. Blame it all on Fraudriguez and try to work your way back up with somebody with ties to the program. And if they launch him now, then they can tell the NCAA that they took swift corrective action.

RR CONTRACT Section 2.05 spells out NCAA violation matters. Remedies are contained in section 4.02(e) & (f).

Columnist: Tough go for Rich Rod

FREE PRESS STAFF

Lots of national voices have weighed in on Michigan and Rich Rodriguez in the past few days. Here is an excerpt from a column by Mike Lopresti of the Gannett News Service:

"Rodriguez didn't look much like a man living his dream job Monday, fighting tears at the podium, as he asked the public for understanding and the media to please leave his program alone.

"Get invited to Michigan, and a coach must feel as if the world is his bagel. But following this guy the past 20 months has been like turning pages in a Stephen King horror story. ... Maybe he's a villain, maybe he's a victim. Maybe he's both. What we know is this guy's career has had a meteorite fall on it since the day he showed up at Michigan. ...

"(There is) one way out of this mess for Rodriguez. Win early, win often. Victory over Notre Dame and Michigan State, and this issue is forgiven. Victory over Ohio State, and it's forgotten. ...

"Winning cures many things. At Michigan, in the age of Rich Rodriguez, there appear many things to cure."

certainly logical. however, if you fire dickrod who do you name as the head coach? i can't imagine any self respecting coach abandoning their team the first week of a new season. so i have to think anyone you would want wouldn't be available and anyone available wouldn't be qualified/desireable.

I know, I mean I've never heard of someone leaving his team just a week or so before a major bowl game to go where the grass is greener because we're talking university athletics where we teach ethical behavior...

If players confirmed the abuse of rules, they were either ignorant or they are starting to turn on their coach. I read discontent between the lines, but maybe I am wrong.

This story is a big deal only if the season does not meet the expectations for dramatic improvement over last year. A loss to Mickey Mouse U, a blowout loss against Notre Dame--lack of success will bring this story and player resentment back with a vengeance.

I have a feeling that they are turning on the coach. It might be the holdovers from the Carr days who do not like the new approach. I saw their schedule for the first four games (Western Michigan, Notre Dame, Eastern Michigan and Indiana) and thought they could be 3 and 1. Now with dissension in the club house and this distraction, they could be 1 and 3.

The conspiracy theorist in me has a vision of the powers that be leaking this to get RichRod and maybe Martin out.

If I'm reading the contract that L-Rod linked correctly, TSUN can terminate RichRod 'for cause' if he personally (not TSUN in general) is guilty of a major violation under his watch, or if he was aware of a violation by a football program employee and didn't report it promptly. But the investigation must result in a self-report of the violation, and include a 14-day notice to him followed by a hearing to defend hinself.

If they fire him 'for cause' they owe him nothing form that point on.

TSUN also has a buyout clause in the contract in which they can terminate him at any time and pay him. The buyout amount for the first 3 years of the contract (which would run through the 2010 season) is $4 million. When he left WVU, he complained about the large buyout number, but it could end up being in his favor.

This just keeps getting better and better!

Now, he is being sued as part of a group that has apparently defaulted on $3+M dollar deal.

Is UM going to pay this tab, also? Is Bill Martin on his boat, yet?
University of Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez sued for defaulting on real-estate deal - AnnArbor.com

Oh, and yes, still an ass. (Sorry, NF)

In that article:

Rodriguez?s financial advisor, Mike Wilcox, released a statement through Michigan spokesperson Dave Ablauf late Monday, saying Rodriguez is the victim of a real-estate Ponzi scheme.

RichRod is a victim? I haven't seen that in almost 24 hours.

Take it FWIW, but a friend of mine went to Vegas a couple of weeks ago and ended up playing poker in Vegas with a former UM starter (under Carr) for several hours. According to my friend (Sparty alum), the ex-player told him that the hate for RROD is widespread among the power alumni and ex-players and that the money for the buyout is already in place. He also said that RROD spoke at a function with about 100 or so close to the program folks and that nobody applauded him at all. He'd better win pretty fast . . .

Of course, the real victim here is the University of Michigan...oh, wait, that's a good thing!

BTW, if I misspell anything today you have to forgive me 'cause I'm kinda groggy from lack of sleep--every time I started to nod off last night I was awakened by the sound of laughter from the State of West Virginia.

The investigation is the starting point, then the 14 day notice (due process) if a violation is discovered. Implied in this provision is the need for UM to create a written record after interviewing all relevant parties and examining all relevant information to present to RR should the need arise. The one factor present in this contract that was missing in OB's contract was the ability of the university to determine a violation occurred even before a self report is filed with the Big 10 or NCAA.

Thanks man, and yeah that's what I was saying. Im guessing it won't cause a big ruckus in the long term scheme of things. The story seems to be huge amongst the buckeye fans right now, even more so than with the wolverine fans... which is somewhat understandable.

[sarcasm]You're absolutely correct.[/sarcasm]

Out here in OREGON, I didn't listen to a 15 minute discussion on this very investigation and reporting at lunch. Nor did the Sports Radio show run an entire segment on this topic TWICE. Above all that, the former BYU Couger and NFL lineman (that's one of the commentators) didn't discuss just what exactly the airing of this grievance means by the players.

This, my friend, is a symptom of a much, MUCH BIGGER problem for RR and Michigan. The FACT that players (past and present) threw the Head Coach under the bus PUBLICLY means that there is serious dissension. Do you understand this? The ramifications of whether punishment is brought or not is small compared to the highly likely prospect of a team on the verge of imploding.
