Rich Rodriguez (official thread of last laughs)

I'm watching the Big Ten Network replay game of the scUM Notre Dame game from last year. Stonum just took one back to the house in the first quarter, prompting the announcer to say, "I saw Michigan play twice last year and I can tell you this Michigan team is waaaaay better. That's how Rich Rod does it. Sub par first year but a drastic improvement in year two."

I lol'd

egg on that guys face. Aw who we kidding, we were all fooled at that point....LOL. Still a hell of a game though

By "we were all fooled" I take it you mean those who are fans of that school up north. You can go back and read the posts of people here celebrating when they announced RR.

I'm not going to wade through 357 pages to see what everyone thought two or three years ago.

@southcampus.....this is the year where I make my decision. I've been on board with the whole "wait until he's got his players" excuse. Well, he's got enough of them not for me to need to see something. 7-8 wins and an improved defense is what i'm looking for to solidify my opinion of him. I do think that's doable too.

I really didn't think we would have the growing pains we've seen

Is it better to have a Michigan coach that is just so easy to hate or even uber-hate, like RichRod... or is it better to have a Bo or Lloyd type coach that you can mutually respect on while still love to beat them into a pulp?

I find myself missing a class act like Lloyd only a little bit. RichRod is just so much fun to mess around with! Its like we get to always knock the sand castles down that he just had built up.

the problem with that analogy is you're merely stomping on the sand that's already been pummeled by UM fans.

Did we need a changing of the guard? IMO, yes. I thought the game had passed Lloyd by and he'd gotten lazy. Which was very evident by the game plan he threw together against Florida in the cap one bowl. Could you imagine if he would have run that offense all season? HELLO

Did we need such a drastic change? IMO, no. I think Martin went into panic mode after Schiano declined the job. Harbaugh had burned the bride, and contrary to popular belief, Miles was never even offered, and probably never will be due to integrity issues stemming from when he originally left the program.

It could be a long road back, assuming something doesn't "click" this year. I think it may, or at least I hope it does.

Out of pure curiosity, what makes you think that defense will be improved? You lost, by far, the best player on defense. I don't see anybody that can provide remotely near the energy or pressure that BG did. You lost your best CB. Your defensive backfield is extremely inexperienced. LB play is still a huge question mark. If it wasn't such a desperate time, you would look at those factors and expect a pretty significant step back. It seems like most of the um camp is saying the defense has to improve because it couldn't possibly get any worse...

Mike, how do you feel about an 8 win season if the 5 are sparty, OSU, illinois, Wisconsin and Iowa? That's a 7 n 5 season without winning the two most important rivalries and another bad loss like Illinois. They'd obviously win some low bowl to finish with 8 wins.

Michigan needed a randy edsall coach, although I admit I'm clueless about his recruiting acumen. He must be doing something right with their recent draftees. Harbaugh was too young, too much history, and not a gamble you take at a school like Michigan one year removed from a near NC berth.

I think the improvement will come from finally having a DC there more than one season. Last year was our third DC in three years. Finally some stability and familiarity in the scheme and system should sure some of that up.

Losing Graham was the biggest blow, but I think Roh can step in there and be that fire for the defense.

I never thought Warren was all that great, so I don't think he's that big of a loss to be honest.

well, bright side would be wins over Notre Dame and PSU. But I think losing to msu three years in a row would be pretty devastating. But with no Joe Montana....errrrr, Juice Williams, I don't see us losing to Illinois.

We also played msu to OT and we're driving towards a possible winning FG vs Iowa if not for a bad play by the true freshman Denard throwing that pick.

Yes, and thanks to an extremely bad call you were able to COME back to beat Indiana -- AT HOME. The ND game could have either way.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but didn't the whole investigation start because a few former/current players let the freep know there were extra practice times and members of the staff routinely watched them practice?

So that would mean that coach Dick had absolutely no idea he was violating the rules. This coming from a man who has been a head coach at multiple places. A man who is 47 years old and has a college degree (my guess is it's not in business management). And he had no clue anything was wrong?

Yet the players, who are between 18-21 year olds, were aware of the violations.

Something doesn't add up.

And oh yeah, he's still an ass.

Nice, good foundation for a Monty Python skit.
