RIP Coach Joe Daniels (Former QB Coach/Director of Personnel--official thread)

Daniels headed to a hall of fame
Ohio State quarterbacks coach Joe Daniels will be inducted into the Western Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame on Saturday night in Pittsburgh.
A native of Bethel Park, Pa., where he played football and baseball, Daniels went on to be a three-year starter in football for nearby Slippery Rock University.
He plunged into his coaching career soon after, a journey that took him to both the college and professional ranks. Among those quarterbacks he's worked with are Dan Marino, Ken O'Brien, Oliver Luck and 2006 Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith of Ohio State.
Daniels has been battling cancer for three years now, and has had to share the QB coaching duties at Ohio State with Nick Siciliano as they work to develop Terrelle Pryor, a native of Jeannette, Pa.

Ohio State coach Jim Tressel today announced today that he has promoted Nick Siciliano to quarterbacks coach to replace veteran Joe Daniels, who is moving to an administrative role with the football program as he continues his battle with cancer.

The NCAA granted OSU a waiver that allowed Siciliano, the offensive quality control coach since 2005, to work in tandem with Daniels as QBs coach since the spring of 2008. The recent retirement of Bob Tucker, the long-time director of football operations, enabled Tressel to move Daniels, a 39-year coach, into the administration where program assistants Greg Gillum, Todd Alles and Amy Burgess also will have expanded duties.

"Joe is going to have plenty of work to do, no question about that," Tressel said. "But he just won't have to be here from seven in the morning till 10 at night, working out there in the hot sun."

Tressel saw the move as taking advantage of a years-long blend of which the main ingredient was Daniels.

"Joe will still have very important work to do with the team, but Nick has had the benefit of being schooled by him for three years now," Tressel said. "Now Nick is ready to take the reins."

As for Daniels, he will be associate director for personnel development. He will work with the team in community outreach, be the liaison to NFL scouts, high school coaches and OSU campus

Coach Joe Daniels

I'd like to throw the question out to the knowledgable posters here - how much do you think Coach Daniels's exit has affected Terrelle Pryor's development? After all, we've gone from a coach who has demonstrated the ability to develop Pro-Bowl QBs like Dan Marino to a young man (Nick Siciliano) whose primary qualification is that he played for Jim Tressel at YSU. Matt Hayes of Sporting News had an excellent column on the hire:

Hayes' hot seat: Pryor's position coach had better buck up - Matt Hayes - College Football - Sporting News

I frankly see lots of potential in Pryor, but do not see the development that one would hope for at this point in his tenure. And Siciliano seems to have been a pretty marginal hire, given the needs of a very talented QB with a need for intensive coaching. Thoughts?

I don't think Tressel would've hired him, despite the YSU background, if he didn't think he could be a good QB coach.

Unless you're one of those types that says JT only hires/promotes from within ... or you think that Siciliano was already here and had developed a rapport with TP ... or maybe that is why Walt Harris was here earlier, but he wanted too much $$ (or power) so he didn't stick around.

There is any evidence that Daniels doesn't have some sort of interaction with TP or Siciliano, so maybe he is trying to help, too?

I'm not claiming that Daniels is not trying to help, but given his health status I'm not sure how much help he can provide. And my point is that we've gone from having an outstanding, proven QB coach to a very callow, unproven one.

To be fair, Nick was brought on in 2005 and though his official title was quality control, he has been seen as Daniels' successor for a long time. He had as much time working with Troy Smith and Boeckman as with TP.

Sort of like Uecker getting ready to take over for Bollman in 2010.

Given our OL's performance, I can scarcely express the joy I have about that. :roll1:

Yeah, we'll have to wait and see, because the NCAA is actually somewhat vigilant about QC coaches not running meetings during the season, and Uecker just came in July.

He needs more than just three weeks in August to instill his system (if the change is made).
