Seen dozens of sailors nearly drown the first time they were dropped in away from the beach and told to swim back at a measley 500 meters and they were trained. As soon as the tide works against you is like your carrying someone on your back.

Bummer for a guy this young that had a lot of promise in his life.

We just left Seaside 2 weeks ago and they were at double red flags on the beaches half the time we were there. That was a first for us.

The ocean is fine. Stay close enough to shore to ride the waves in. Swim where there are life guards. Get out when you feel the slightest fatigue. If caught in a rip tide, don't fight it, swim across it, parallel to the shoreline until you areout of its grasp.
