S Donte Whitner (Official Thread)

CFN's comments on early entries to the draft and what round they might be drafted in:

http://www.collegefootballnews.com/2006/Draft/EarlyEntries.htm

The Whitner prediction and comment are interesting:
"Projected: 3rd to 5th round
Good or bad move? He needs work. He could've used another year to build more of a buzz. He would've been one of the Big Ten's best defenders in 2006."

I hate to say it and I wish Donte the best of luck, but I don't disagree.

I'm always sad to see "my Buckeyes" move on, and that's whether we're talking early entries, seniors, or 5th year seniors. But for every Wilhelm, Cie Grant, Doss & Nickey that leaves, I look forward to seeing the next Hawk, Carpenter, Salley & Whitner get their shot to add to the lore of our great tOSU football tradition.

Good luck senior class, Santonio, AY, and "Lights Out"! :osu:

To the current players: There are some spots open in the starting line up! Go get 'em!...this should make for an exciting Spring...is it here yet? :tongue2:

OSU's secondary takes second hit

Whitner to leave early for NFL Draft

<!-- begin body-content --> Ohio State junior strong safety Donte Whitner is leaving early for the NFL Draft, Buckeyes running back Antonio Pittman confirmed.
Rumors about Whitner swirled all weekend, but Cleveland Glenville product Whitner made no announcement.
``Donte's gone,'' Pittman said. ``Donte was a basic no-brainer. We were expecting Ashton (Youboty) to come back.''
Youboty, a junior cornerback, sent a statement to the Columbus Dispatch on Saturday that he was entering the April 29-30 draft.
Whitner led the Buckeyes in 2005 with two interceptions. He returned one 26 yards for a touchdown. He also had 55 solo tackles and assisted on 18 more in 12 games last fall. Nine of the tackles were for losses. He had four sacks.

You know, I'm going to be that over-optimistic naive one here, but I'm going to say he pulls back and stays for his senior year. He was supposed to be at the autograph signing and then magically his named was "removed" from the list. He was supposed to annouce this past weekend, and he didn't. Now, all these projections are coming out with him way lower than expected...all the other juniors declaring early to beat the salary cap aren't helping matters for him. If he stays and excels as defensive captain and happens to lead us to a national title (or at least anther BCS win), his stock will shoot up more than enough to overcome the salary cap reduction. I think he'd love to be another Mike Doss and be the safety captain of a championship defense...

That's a really great point. We can only hope and pray...

Seriously...this would be a huge plus for the Buckeyes if somehow he shocks us and stays. He's pretty much being projected as a 2nd day draft pick. Whitner is better than that, but this year so many juniors are leaving early. He could even have an average season next year, and still probably get a higher signing bonus and be a 2nd rounder next year, just with the added experience. Plus if he has a break out season, which could happen because he would be the leader of the defense, then he may just even creep into the 1st round. I hope the word is getting out to him that he may be making the wrong decision. Look as Shazor last year from Michigan...left early just to go undrafted. When things are SO UNCERTAIN as they are for Donte...why risk it? Right now going to the draft seems to be the risky move for him...where as staying would almost definitely increase his stock. Plus...its Ohio State football and we got a great shot at starting next season #1 or close to it, and winning the NC. That's quite an awesome thing to play for.

STAY DONTE!!! It just makes sense...for the fans, for the other seniors...and ESPECIALLY for you!

I want Donte back because I want him to be a Buckeye for another year.

TRYING to look at it objectively (I have no way of knowing if I'm really being objective): The salary cap bonus doesn't apply if you're chosen after the 3rd round. There typically has not been a signing bonus for guys chosen later. I also have to believe that a 3rd round bonus this year would STILL probably be less than a high 2nd round bonus next year.

I guess I'm just trying to convince myself that this is best for Donte, and I truly do want him to do what's best for him. As a fan though, I want Donte back very, very badly.

I would be extremely happy if he stayed, but I am not going to get my hopes up again. Multiple people have heard he's already signed with an agent and while I know sources can be wrong, different people with different sources are saying the same thing. I'm sure Donte just wants to have a PC to have the spotlight, which he deserves!

Why is he so damn eager to leave? He gets a full ride at a great university, probably gets special privelages, you know he gets plenty of women or could if he wanted too, has a great chance to be all big-10 and all-american next year, help us win a NC, and go to in the first round and getting the big bucks instead of 3rd or 4th round money. Big, big mistake if you ask me.
